The Port of Wisbech
Wisbech welcomes vessels up to a maximum of 83m L.O.A.
and 13m beam. Vessels under 60m no Tug attendance required
to swing in the turning basin. Vessels 60 - 75m without bow
thruster Tug attendance required to swing in the turning basin.
All vessels over 75 - 83m Tug attendance required to swing
in the turning basin. Vessels require maximum draft of tidal
prediction minus 2 metres up to a maximum of 4.88m.
All vessels are required to offer good forward visibility. In order
to swing. Masters are advised that adverse weather conditions
can cause large variations on prediction, affecting the restrictions
on draft.
Vessels of unusual construction, or with restricted or limited
visibility require prior permission of the Harbour Master and may
be subject to daylight only passage and/or a tug attending.
12 hours notice may be required to order the tug. For any
vessel sailing from Wisbech in loaded or part loaded condition,
maximum draft should be calculated by prediction minus 2.4
metres. All such vessels should agree their departure plan with
the Pilot Master well in advance of ETD. Outward vessels in
ballast are requested to have minimum draft possible prior to
departure.
Further information from Harbour Master or Pilot Master.
Port Sutton Bridge
Masters, Owners & Charterers are advised to request the latest
information from Sutton Bridge Ship Agency, telephone
+44 (0)1406 351133, with regard to maximum vessel dimensions.
Maximum drafts are as the predicted tide height minus 1 (one)
metre. In general the maximum vessel dimensions and details are as
follows:Vessels up to 90m LOA: draft as per maximum draft tables to
a maximum draft of 6.00m. Vessels 90m-120m LOA: use
maximum draft tables - 0.5m to a maximum draft of 6.00m.
Vessels over 100m LOA: to order the tug attendance from Bill
Buoy to PSB, such a manoeuvre to be carried out on a daylight tide
only. Vessels 85m-100m LOA without a bow thruster
& vessels 95m-100m LOA with a bow thruster will
require a tug to assist/standby when swinging in the Port swinging
basin. Vessels over 100m LOA and/or vessels of
unusual construction affecting visability or manoeuvring
capability, such as vessels with forward wheelhouses, limited
forward visability due to deck cargo, high sided vessels and vessels
which can only berth either port or starboard side to the quay
require prior permission from the Nene Ports Authority Harbour
Master and may be subject to limiting conditions eg: tug attendance,
daylight passage only etc. Failure to obtain prior permission may result
in a delay.
All vessels: Maximum beam 17m.
Vessels outside these limits may be accepted due to exceptional
circumstances and after prior consultation with the Nene Ports
Authority Harbour Master. In any event all vessels are subject to
acceptance by Port Sutton Bridge. Port Sutton Bridge operates on a
NAABSA basis viz. “Not always afloat but safely aground”. The
implication being that vessels must be capable of taking the ground.

Speed Limits on the River Nene and
Nene Approach Channel.
Mariners are reminded regarding the speed of their vessels when
navigating in harbour authority waters.
Rule 6 of the COLREGS requires every vessel to proceed at a safe
speed and for most practical purposes locally, the governing factors
are:a) causing no wash and
b) proceeding at a safe speed so that she can take proper and effective action to avoid collision and be stopped within a
distance appropriate to the prevailing circumstance
and conditions.
Causing wash erodes banks, compromising flood protection and
wildlife habitats and can cause damage to moored craft. It can even
represent a hazard to ships while cargo handling.
It is accepted that planing craft can create less wash at speed than
when moving slowly but within the limits of both the Port of Wisbech
and Port
Sutton Bridge, the following stipulation must be adhered to by all vessels
save those with the permission of the Harbour Master:Port of Wisbech - Between Port Hand Beacon ‘DRAKES’ and Elgood’s
Brewery.
Port Sutton Bridge – Between Port Hand Beacon ‘DOUBLE REDS’ and
the sluice, six (6) cables south of Cross Keys Swing Bridge.
The strict, maximum speed limit in these areas is six (6)
knots through the water, creating no wash.
Mariners are also reminded that from time to time, speed monitoring
exercises will be undertaken by the harbour authority.
Port Marine Safety Code
Maritime and marine related operations within the Port of
Wisbech Authority and Wisbech Pilotage District are subject
to the local Port Marine Safety Code. This represents a
commitment on the part of the Authority and marine businesses
to: Safety Management, Risk Assessment, Port Emergency Plan, Oil Spill Contingency Plan, Flood Action Plan,
Port Waste Management, Port Health and Port Environmental Management Plan
All ships’ Masters and those in charge of small craft are advised
to consult with their local agents or the Harbour Office to ensure
compliance and to obtain a copy of the Port Bye Laws currently
in force.
International Ship and Port
Facility Security Code
From 1 July 2004, the ports of Wisbech and Sutton Bridge and
the area of jurisdiction of the Port of Wisbech Authority have
been subject to the ISPS Code incorporating the Aviation and
Maritime Security Act 1990 and the Merchant Shipping and
Maritime Security Act 1997.
All ships, boats and personnel using these ports and waters
are required to be compliant within the terms of the code and
failure in this respect can lead to exclusion, restriction and/or
prosecution.
Any enquiries concerning the extent of such compliance can be
addressed to the Port of Wisbech Authority or to the appropriate
port facility.
Port Health
Fenland District Council incorporates Wisbech Port Health
Authority which covers both Wisbech Port and Port Sutton
Bridge.
The Authority provides a Port Health Service to commercial ships,
leisure vessels and fishing vessels.
International health regulations require a commercial ship arriving
from a foreign port to carry a valid Ship Sanitation Control
(Exemption) Certificate to show satisfactory standard of hygiene
on board. These certificates can be renewed locally following
ship inspections by port health officers.
Water sampling is carried out to ensure that the water supplied
to the ships and boats from the quays and pontoons is safe to
drink.
Ships sometimes arrive in ports carrying sick crew. For each port
there is a plan for preventing the spread of infectious disease
through working with local hospitals and Health Protection
Agencies to safeguard public health.
Fishing vessels landing their catch at the ports can be inspected
where processing is carried out on board and the cooked
product can be sampled for microbiological testing.
Wisbech Port Health Authority also covers an area of sea in the
Wash where cockles and mussels grow. Although on occasions
there is no known commercial harvesting of these molluscs,
routine sampling is carried out and information is displayed to
any casual gatherers of these shellfish at times when algal
contamination makes them unsafe to eat.

Nene Ports tide tables 2016
All times are LMT (Local Mean Time). They are adjusted for daylight
saving. Tidal predictions for Wisbech Cut are based upon data
supplied by the Proudman Oceanographic Laboratory, copyright
reserved.
All times and depths are greatly affected by prevailing winds.
Winds from N.W. to N.E. increase depths and may cause high
water to occur earlier. Winds from S.E. through South to S.W. may
cause tides to fail to reach prediction, and high water may occur
later. Heavy Spring freshets may cause increased depths.
Whilst every care has been taken in the computation of these Tables,
neither we nor the Institute guarantee the information contained
therein, and accept no liability for errors of any description.
High Water Wisbech is approximately 0hr 30 mins after HW
Wisbech Cut although slack water Wisbech can be +1hr30mins.

The Wash -
An Unspoilt Marine Wilderness
For the cruising sailor, the rivers and waterways of the Fens offer much by
way of tranquil leisure time afloat. For the marginally more adventurous
however – and for those making passages to and from remoter destinations
– the Wash is a delight awaiting sailors with an eye for something different.
Historically, the Wash has suffered from an unjust reputation as a wild and
dangerous place best avoided by yachtsmen. Although short, steep seas
can result after prolonged spells of north easterly winds, the Wash is more
straightforward that the Thames estuary being 200 square miles of
embayment with plenty of uninterrupted, deep water to enjoy.
Clearly marked channels point the way to the rivers Witham, Welland,
Nene and Great Ouse. A grand variety of destinations with much to
recommend them. Wisbech in particular on the tidal Nene is a very easy
prospect given its modern marina facilities.
All the rivers, (depending on size of vessel), offer an unrivalled gateway to
the inland waterway network in the same way as many a port in nearby
Continental Europe. Wisbech Yacht Harbour can arrange mast unstepping
and storage.
The Wash is also an important haven for wildlife and amongst its
designations it is a European Marine Site and Special Area of Conservation.
It is home to the country’s largest population of common seals and with
approximately 160,000 wading birds and 51,000 wildfowl attracted to
the extensive mudflats and sandbanks, a “twitcher’s” paradise.
Sport fishing too is of increasing interest to many with bass, mackerel,
smooth hound, Thornback Ray and Tub Gurnard amongst the species
regularly caught. Organised sea fishing trips can be joined from Wisbech
Yacht Harbour.
As many other parts of the UK become overcrowded – and expensive for
small boats, the Wash is fast becoming a place where the slower pace and
traditional values are being rediscovered.
The Wash and North Norfolk Coast were made a Special Area of Conservation
and a European Marine Site under UK and European law in 1996.
Help to protect this unique environment and safeguard the wildlife by
following the Good Practice Guide.

Navigational Safety
The River Nene is a fast flowing river with tidal rates up to 6 knots
on big spring tides. Neap tides however, rarely exceed 2 knots
and the tidal range drops from 6 metres to 3, presenting a much
more benign experience.
While these conditions obviously demand respect, they are not
difficult given proper planning and should not be a discouragement
to visiting Wisbech. Many other parts of the UK and continental
Europe are subject to similar conditions and do not prevent leisure
boating activity.
Commercial vessels of up to 2,500 dwt visit Wisbech. Ships up to
5,000 dwt can stop at Port Sutton Bridge (PSB), although the larger
vessels can only enter on spring tides. About 40 ships sail up to
Wisbech and 300 to PSB annually.
Commercial vessels will mostly have a length far in excess of the
river width and are therefore restricted to the deepest water both in
the river and in the outer channel. Small boat users are required to
strictly observe Rule 9 of the International Regulations for Preventing
Collisions at Sea, taking particular account of:
Rule 9(b): A vessel of less than 20 metres in length or a sailing vessel shall not impede the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within a narrow channel or fairway.
Rule 9(d): A vessel shall not cross a narrow channel or fairway if such crossing impedes the passage of a vessel which can safely navigate only within such channel of fairway.
Extreme care should be taken when approaching either port area
between HW-2.5 hours / + 1 hour. This is when commercial traffic
will be operating. This is especially so in the vicinity of the swinging
basins (Wisbech and PSB) around the HW period. Listen on VHF
Channel 09.
Be alert for sound signals, especially Five Short Blasts “I am unclear of your intentions”.
Commercial and working vessels (tugs, pilot boats, etc) will slow
down if they consider their wash to be excessive but they have to be
aware of your presence and, at night or in poor visibility, lights and
sound signals can be lost in the background of a river environment.
Again, contact should be made via Channel 09 VHF giving your
position, course and intentions and requestingconfirmation of your
message.
Please maintain a listening watch on Channel 09 at all times as
planned movements of commercial vessels can change very quickly
due to reasons outside the control of the Harbour Authority and these
may reflect on the orders given to your own vessel.
It must be emphasized that prior notice of your ETA and ETD,
passage plan and vessel particulars will assist in removing most of
the problems likely to be encountered, and will greatly add to the
pleasure of your visit.
Passage Information for Small Craft
Owners/Skippers of small craft intending to visit Wisbech are advised to
make prior contact with the Harbour Office on +44(0) 1945 588059.
A chartlet of the buoyed approach channel can be obtained by calling the
above number.
Times of High Water at Wisbech are approximately +30 minutes on
Wisbech Cut. Slack water at Wisbech can, however, vary according to
local conditions but is approximately +1 hour 30 minutes on Wisbech Cut.
Cross Keys Swing Bridge has a estimated air draft of 3.40m at MHWS.
The bridge will open 3 hours +/- HW . To avoid delays Mariners requiring
the bridge to open should give 24 hrs notice if possible but a minimum of
6 hrs will be required.” Small Craft which require a bridge opening should
liaise directly with the Swing bridge duty officer
Telephone + 44 (0) 1406 350 364 Mobile 07788931616
Call Sign “Swing Bridge VHF 09”. Updated ETA’s are essential
especially if the passage is delayed or abandoned. The bridge openings
are controlled by marine traffic lights and should be abided by at all times.
During Wisbech ship movement’s; small vessels may be required to coincide
their transit with commercial approach.
A waiting pontoon for small craft is situated adjacent to the West bank,
approximately 500 metres North of Cross Keys Swing Bridge (see chartlet).
This is for short term mooring only, allowing craft to make best use of tide
when departing seawards and for holding inbound craft, prior to a bridge
swing. Vessels should not raft more than two deep nor use the facility for
any other purpose except with the prior permission of the Harbour Office.
There is no shoreward access from this platform.
Monitor VHF Ch.09 at all times and be aware of
commercial ship movements
