Photo: Kris Jarrett, www.krisjarrett.com DIRECTOR’S LET TER 2009 was a very special year in Lake Champlain history and in the history of the museum. It was the 400th anniversary of Samuel de Champlain’s brief, profound and only visit to the lake that bears his name. This Quadricentennial anniversary presented the museum with a unique opportunity to reflect on the 11,000 years of human culture which took place before Champlain’s arrival and the 400 years of history that flowed from it. The Lake Champlain Maritime Museum’s goal was to design a dynamic and engaging series of public programs to explore the region’s rich record of history and archaeology. I am pleased to report that 2009 exceeded all our expectations. Great museum - what a change in 25 years! -- Granville, NY Amazing and beautiful - a great resource! - Salt Lake City, UT As we view the road ahead I am filled with cautious optimism. We have just learned that we will be the recipient of a grant to install new docks at North Harbor that will permit boaters to visit the museum. We have just broken ground for the Hazelett Family Small Watercraft Center, a project more than a decade in the making. This new facility will provide a secure place for a significant portion of our small watercraft and a new exhibition of regional iceboating. Our Maritime Research Institute (MRI) continues to document and manage our region’s submerged cultural resources and our Education programs continue to engage the next generation in the stories and lessons of Lake Champlain. Our 2009 theme was Discover 1609 and we produced exhibits for the Burlington Airport, Main Street Landing, and the Champlain Valley Fair in addition to our home campus at Basin Harbor. A tour by Lois McClure to 20 communities became the centerpiece of our Discover 1609 outreach program. This was enhanced by a series of special publications, lectures, concerts and mini exhibits. Our new film Operation Spitfire was completed and shown on regional Vermont and New York PBS stations, and a speciallydesigned new curriculum Navigating the Champlain Valley was made available to teachers and students. In conclusion, we have had a great Quadricentennial season. And we have a fantastic menu of programs, projects, fieldwork and outreach activities on the drawing board for next year. Your continuing support and patronage is the reason we can offer such a robust, diverse and multi-faceted program and outlook. Sincerely, Erick Tichonuk (left) and Art Cohn (right) are joined by life-sized puppets of Samuel de Champlain and Henry Hudson aboard the schooner in Westport, NY. (See page 6) Photo: Carol Ann Margolis 2009 will also be remembered as a special time because of the challenged economy. I am very pleased to report that with your continued support the museum has been able to weather the storm without layoffs and while producing perhaps the most intricate program in our 25-year history. Our dedicated staff rose to the occasion and has worked tirelessly to take advantage of the Champlain-Hudson Quadricentennial and to move forward our mission “to preserve and share the rich history and archaeology of the region.” Many thanks to our 2009 Season Sponsors! Fort Edward Sailing Canal Boat Archaeological response to the unfortunate damage to the fort included documenting the dislodged timbers, studying the remains still in the water and undertaking a land excavation of the river bank where the timbers came In May, LCMM Nautical Archaeologist Adam Kane participated in the archaeological study of a nineteenth century sailing vessel sunk in an area to be dredged. The project was undertaken by archaeologists from URS, an engineering firm working for General Electric. The study revealed the vessel to be a sailing canal boat from the 1820s.
