OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
NEWSLETTER
MAY 2016

DEO GRATIAS!
Dear Faithful,
Thanks be to God, Our Lady of Mount Carmel
and St. Joseph, our offer for the Lutheran Church on
Huron St., New Hamburg has been accepted! This is
wonderful news for our congregation. At last, we will
have a church sufficiently large to accommodate all the
faithful. More importantly, it will be a throne for the
King of the universe who will dwell there really and
substantially in the tabernacle. We will all try to
beautify it and make it a true house of God. It will be
especially beautiful by the fervour of the prayers we offer
there and the purity of the hearts that we bring to Holy
Communion. Also, we will have a large hall with
kitchen facilities, many small classrooms and a house to
lodge our Sisters. Deo gratias!
As I continue to concentrate to focus on the
Boarding facility building project, Fr. Gerrity will be coordinating the plans for moving in under my supervision.
In due course, he will communicate regarding necessary
work. We will take possession God willing on the feast
of St. Paul, June 30th. There will be some weeks of work
before we move in – notably the removal of asbestos and
the catholicisation of the Sanctuary area. Fairly soon
also, we will need to do work on the roof. I envisage that
we will, God willing, have a blessing of the new church
by the District Superior at the Assumption festival.
The financial responsibility that we have
undertaken is a grave one. The repayments on the
church building will be approximately $3,500 per
month. Your dedication and generosity in your pledges
show that we are able to meet this commitment. We
won’t be able to pay this without sacrifice. That the
burden is not unduly upon a few, everyone must
contribute what they reasonably can. We will
henceforth have a second collection on the first and third
Sundays specifically for the new church debt. The
collection for the St. Joseph’s Bursary will continue to
take place on the second Sunday of the month and the
fourth Sunday’s second collection will be in aid of the
Academy.
Fr. David Sherry.

AMORIS LAETITIA
Joe is a bank robber; he feels trapped in this
situation because of the fact that his first job did not work
out. Moreover, his parish priest would not give him any
money when he asked for it. Although he realises that
robbing banks is not an ideal and would not happen if we
were all perfect, he feels justified in robbing banks – in
his concrete situation. Fr. Pius down the road leaves him
angry. When Joe presents himself for Communion, Fr.
Pius – based on the fact that everyone in the church
knows that Joe is a bank robber – passes over him. This
makes Joe feel dirty – as if he had done something bad.
Joe does not feel good when he leaves Mass. Why does
that priest think that he can make flesh of one and fish of
another? Who appointed him judge? Then, over his
Sunday lunchtime pint of beer, Joe relaxes and
imagines… What would the world be like if there were
no judging? If, instead of pointing the finger at bank
robbers trapped in their situation by the modern world
and the concrete circumstances of life, priests instead
tried to discern everyone’s individual situation and
accompanied them on their journey without judging. He
couldn’t help thinking of the words of John Lennon’s
song (did he remember the words correctly?): “Imagine
there's no judging…”
A few weeks ago, Pope Francis issued an apostolic
exhortation called Amoris Laetitia. In this document, the
Pope teaches that indissoluble Christian marriage is an
ideal, but there are also other non-stable situations such as
co-habitation – “in those cases,” says the Pope, “respect
can also be shown for those signs of love which in some
way reflect God’s own love.” (Paragraph 294) “Hence,”
he continues, “it can no longer simply be said that all those
in any ‘irregular’ situation are living in a state of mortal sin
and are deprived of sanctifying grace.” It is a matter of
conscience. For this reason, individual pastors can now
discern “that in a particular situation, no grave fault exists”
and thus give Holy Communion to those who are
consciously living in sin. (Footnote 336)
Joseph has now found his priest. In the logic of
Pope Francis’ words, Fr. George, on the other side of the
street from Fr. Pius, has opened a catholic church that has
a non-judgmental attitude towards bank robbers – the sign
outside proclaims it a “safe space for safecrackers.” Every
Sunday the children see Fr. George give Holy
Communion to Joe and they get a warm feeling inside – so
you can be a bank robber and go to heaven. In a much
warmer place very far away, Satan chuckles softly and rubs
his wings: “maybe I need to build on that extension after
all.”

New Vestments for the Chapel
Thanks to the generosity of our faithful, OLMC Chapel is able to sustain the liturgy with proper beauty and order,
and give to God the honour and glory that is due to His infinite Majesty. The Sunday collection provides for the normal
consumables of the church, but the annual Pasta Dinner is essential for buying the necessary permanent items that can be
quite expensive.
The donations of the last Pasta Dinner were used to purchase $2,500 worth of vestments – one complete set in both
rose and gold (pictures on right). The gold set that previously filled the sacristy drawer belongs to our dear Fr. May and left
with him, and the present rose set is not very nice, so these two sets will be a big improvement!
The vestments have just arrived in the mail, but unfortunately, they must be blessed by a bishop before being used,
so there will be a bit of time before they will be seen in the sanctuary. Thanks again to all who contributed towards the
purchasing of these beautiful vestments.
