From The Board
We are about to embark on the wonderful month of October, the month of Thanksgiving, a
month resplendent with the glorious colours of nature and the evidence of bountiful harvests. At
Durham Christian Homes we have been richly blessed in many ways as we see progress in our
preparation to build the Whitby Glen Hill Terrace Long Term Care.
The Board of Directors and the leadership team and staff have been working diligently to ensure
that the many fundraising initiatives, (including the Capital Campaign) which facilitate the funding of our new Long
Term Care facility are well underway.
The ground breaking ceremony is being held on Sep 30, and Gala tickets sales and sponsorships are well under way
with many wonderful silent action items being donated. We are looking forward to a wonderful evening in support
of Glen Hill Terrace.
The Board and Committee meetings are in full swing as progress continues towards the realization of our plans for
Glen Hill Terrace. Communication and meetings are ongoing with municipal and provincial representatives, as well as
architects, financial institutions.
Staff and the leadership team continue to ensure that our homes in Whitby and Bowmanville are operating efficiently and that the residents are provided with stellar care, programs and activities.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, I wish residents, families, and staff a blessed Thanksgiving. We can never be at a
loss for reasons for praising an unchanging God.
"Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless
his name. For the Lord is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations".

From Residents’ Council
Dear Residents,
The cooler breezes are blowing and the leaves are beginning to show the splendor of brilliant reds and oranges….it
must be fall. With this wonderful new season, we also welcome the start of all our regular activities here at the
home. Please be sure to check your calendars to see where you can stay active during the cooler months.
With many new residents over the past few months, our Executive Council and some of our floor reps enjoyed a social tea to welcome these residents and help to introduce them to our wonderful home. Last month we also welcomed all those who were newly elected to sit on our Residents’ Council as floor reps. To those of you who decided
it was time to step down, I personally thank you for serving so faithfully over the years and for your work in representing the interests of our fellow residents.
September brought many exciting events including a fun trip to the Metro Toronto Zoo, a fantastic concert with the
Pickering Community Concert Band and an incredible fundraising concert involving some of our own residents, which
raised $566.65 for the new build of Glen Hill Terrace. We also celebrated the first step to this new build with the official ground breaking ceremony on Sept 30th.
A new season also brought us a new Community Life Coordinator. On behalf of the residents, I would like to welcome David Tigchelaar, who comes to us with a Masters of Divinity and Bachelor of Arts in Pastoral Ministry. He
brings over 20 years of experience as a Youth Pastor and Ministry Coordinator for a variety of church denominations.
He shares life with his wife, Thelma and his adorable 5 year old daughter, Abigail as well as a 4-legged daughter
(dog), Daisy. In his spare time he enjoys board games, old movies and spending time with family. We are excited to
have David join us and we look forward to what he brings to help us build the life of our community here.
This month we look forward to the upcoming Thanksgiving Lunch on October 6th, the Dutch male concert on October
12th, an accordion concert on October 13th and the seasonal Bala Cranberry trip on October 14th.
Finally, please remember to watch the bulletin boards for information on the upcoming Bazaar being held on Saturday November 5th. I encourage everyone who is able to sign up to volunteer for this annual fundraising event, which
would not be possible without our volunteers.
Wishing each of you a very blessed and enjoyable Thanksgiving,
Walter Ciona

Looking Up
An old jack-o-lantern lay on
the ground
And looked up at the moonman yellow and round.
Then said the Jack-o-lantern “How can
it be,
That fellow up there looks so much
like me?
He’s proud of his shining, I have no
doubt,
But just wait until his candle goes out.”

For the Funny Bone
Sitting on the side of the highway waiting to catch speeding drivers, a State Police Officer sees a car puttering
along at 22 MPH. He thinks to himself, “This driver is just as dangerous as a speeder!” So he turns on his lights
and pulls the driver over. Approaching the car, he notices that there are five seniors — two in the front seat and
three in the back – eyes wide and white as ghosts. The driver, obviously confused, says to him, “Officer, I don’t
understand, I was doing exactly the speed limit! What seems to be the problem?”
“Ma’am,” the officer replies, “You weren’t speeding, but you should know that driving slower than the speed limit
can also be a danger to other drivers.”
“Slower than the speed limit?” she asked. No sir, I was doing the speed limit exactly… Twenty-Two miles an
hour!” the old woman says a bit proudly. The State Police officer, trying to contain a chuckle explains to her that
“22” was the route number, not the speed limit. A bit embarrassed, the woman grinned and thanked the officer
for pointing out her error.
“But before I let you go, Ma’am, I have to ask… Is everyone in this car ok? These women seem awfully shaken
and they haven’t muttered a single peep this whole time.” the officer asks.
“Oh, they’ll be alright in a minute officer. We just got off Route 189.”
