Hebron Highlights* ‘Hebron’ was the original name of the 1790 congregation that is now ‘Jonesborough Presbyterian Church’ January, 2017 Jonesborough Presbyterian Church 128 West Main Street P O Box 383 Jonesborough, TN 37659 423-753-6162 Pastor: Reverend Allen Huff Clerk of Session: Bill Reese Treasurer: Alexis Burkett Office Staff: Monica Moore Music Director: Cherry Smith Youth Director: Brooke Ransdell Pianist: Jeri Paolini Nursery: Debbie Walls WebMaster: Bill Reese Newsletter Editor: Monica Moore Parish Nurse: Carol Jernigan Dear Friends, Dear Friends, When we go to visit the Georgia Huffs, we usually stay with my brother and his family who live just outside Augusta. A few years ago, during one of our invasions, I was in a bathroom brushing my teeth. Standing there, I scanned the dozens of pictures my oldest niece, Katherine, had taped to the mirror. At the top of the montage sat a picture of a three-year-old Katherine nestled inside a large red plastic bucket with a yellow handle. Her arms are tucked into the bucket with the rest of her. The straps of her dark blue swimsuit criss-cross on her back as she peers out across white sand to the Atlantic Ocean. Like a sundial, the shadow of bucket and girl stretching back toward the camera told me that it was morning sun bathing the sand and lifting a glittering, pale blue light from the sea. The longer I looked at the picture, the more it seemed to invite me to imagine myself inside that moment, like Katherine inside her bucket. Think about it. Sit yourself inside a bucket and cast your gaze across the miles upon miles of deep, mysterious, and often-dangerous ocean before you. It seems a good metaphor for the human experience of God. While we are made in God’s image, a single human being is to God what a bucket is to the ocean. None of us, in either body or mind, can contain or give full expression to God. This is not to say, of course, that as individuals we have no worth, or that we cannot experience the grace and Love of God in solitude. It is simply to acknowledge that God creates us for community. Only in community – in the humbling presence of other buckets, of all sizes, shapes, colors, and ideologies – do we begin to wade into the fullness that is God. As you stand at the threshold of a new year, I invite you to sit in a bucket’s moment, peering out over the new ocean of 2017. Feel in that moment the promise, the challenge, and the heartache that will be yours. Receive it gratefully. The next twelve months will not be perfect. You will have high and low tides just like you did in 2016, 2015, and in every other year you have lived. But 2017 is unexplored and unknown. It holds a fullness of joy and grief you will not know until the waning moments of next December. What will you do with 2017? What will God ask of you in it? How will you make each moment count for the good of the next, and for the good of those with whom you live and for the good of the earth that sustains us all? Spend time in the bucket as needed, but live for the ocean. New 6-week Class begins January 24th. Class time: 11 – Noon. Like other styles of yoga, gentle yoga relieves stress, increases flexibility, calms the mind, and strengthens the body. Gentle yoga, in particular, can be relaxing and help enhance the range of motion. And, of course, a big benefit is that it’s accessible to people who can’t do a practice that requires a lot of flexibility and strength. In gentle yoga, the movement is slow, each movement is linked with breath, and we enter into the postures gradually—moving in and out of each pose first, and then finding a holding position. This preparation and fluid entry into postures protects and nurtures the joints, muscles, and connective tissue. With dynamic gentle yoga, you explore your pain-free range of motion and find your edge, so you can come safely and comfortably into the pose, depending on what’s right for your body on any given day. Gentle Yoga is particularly good for balancing digestive difficulties because its slow, rhythmic movement is soothing and relaxing to the nervous system. Done regularly, it can also improve sleep patterns. When I teach gentle yoga with yoga relaxation, in particular, it has a huge impact on sleep as well. Check Your Vital Signs on the 4th Sunday of every month before and after Sunday School. See Carol Jernigan, Parish Nurse, in the Social Hall. Looking for Volunteers! Do you have a gift for making soup?? Or baking bread?? I am looking for folks who can help out in a new outreach ministry! Sign up in the Narthex. One more thing..! If you should find yourself in the hospital, please let the admitting nurse know, that you would like for me, your parish nurse to be notified. You don’t even have to remember my name! This is a question that should be asked at every admission. I would hate to hear through the grapevine that someone has been in the hospital. Mountain States can then notify me that when and where you can be found.
