Kiwis worried social network
content could damage career prospects
•
Online jobs the leading source of work
•
Almost a quarter of Kiwis worried about their social network content
•
Nearly a third edit social network content to avoid work problems
While over of a quarter of Kiwis go online to
hunt for work, many are increasingly concerned
about the material they have posted on social
networking sites and the impact it could have on
their career, according to the latest survey results
from global workforce solutions leader, Kelly
Services®.
According to the Kelly survey, 25% of New
Zealand men and 22% of women are worried that
material from their social networking sites could
adversely impact their careers. And to prevent
career problems, 30% of women and 28% of men
deliberately censor or edit their personal social
network content.
The findings are part of the Kelly Global
Workforce Index*, which obtained the views of
approximately 97,000 people in 30 countries,
including over 1,800 in New Zealand.
Kelly Services managing director Debbie Grenfell
says the survey shows that while social media is
becoming active as an employment tool, so too
is apprehension about the damage it can have
on careers.
The survey shows 27% of respondents secured
their most recent position through an online job
posting – the leading source of jobs – ahead
of “word-of-mouth” referrals, used by 23%,
recruitment/staffing firms (20%), direct approaches
from employers (12%), print advertisements
(10%), and “other” methods (7%).
While social media sites play a small role in
getting a job – with only 1% of respondents
securing their most recent jobs through a social
network – Kiwis are increasingly aware of the
impact their online activity could have on their
careers.
“We are finding more people are using social
networks to look for work because it allows them
to target exactly the job they want, and even the
organisation where they want to work,” says
Debbie Grenfell.
“Even though a small percentage of people
actually secured their most recent job through
social networking, 17% are scouring social media
sites, such as Facebook®, LinkedIn® and Twitter®,
seeking job openings.”
“At the same time, social networks are becoming
an increasingly valuable tool for employers looking
to find someone who is the right fit for their
organisation.”
Despite their concerns, many Kiwis also believe
being active online is essential for their career
development, with 27% of men and 21% of
women using their social networks to improve
their job prospects. Younger workers rely more
heavily on social networking, with 33% of Gen Y
(aged 18-29) respondents say it is essential to be
active in social media in order to advance their
careers.
Other results of the survey in New Zealand show:
•
Facebook is the most popular social media
site for Gen Y (aged 18-29) respondents to
look for work but LinkedIn is more popular
with Gen X (aged 30-47) and baby boomers
(aged 48-65)
•
35% of respondents say their employers have
social networking policies that regulate use
at work
•
Industries where employees are most active
in online conversations include Travel/Leisure,
Utilities, and Retail
•
Those most active in searching for jobs online
are in Wellington, where 21% use social
networking to seek work, followed by Auckland
(18%), Waikato (15%), and Canterbury (10%).
And despite the rise in popularity of social
networking, the vast majority of respondents
(68%) spend an hour or less per day on social
media sites, while 19% spend no time at all.
Only 13% spend an hour or more each day.
“It’s clear that social networking is changing
the way that people seek out work and engage
in conversations about work opportunities. Like
any new technology, people are learning that
there are positives and negatives, and they need
to be careful that they are tapping into the best
elements of the Internet when their careers are
involved,” Debbie Grenfell concludes.
About the Kelly Global Workforce Index™
The Kelly Global Workforce Index is an annual survey revealing opinions about work and the
workplace from a generational viewpoint. Approximately 97,000 people from the Americas, APAC
and EMEA responded to the 2011 survey with results published on a quarterly basis. Kelly Services
was the recipient of a MarCom Platinum Award in 2010 and a Gold Award in 2009 for the Kelly
Global Workforce Index in the Research/Study category.

Social media screenings
It may have once been the domain of self-obsessed teenagers, but social
media has grown to impact almost all aspects of modern life – including
primary business practices.
While having a social media presence and
engaging in social media marketing has become
increasingly important for New Zealand business
owners, this ever-evolving online phenomenon
has also changed the way businesses hire new
staff – with an estimated half of all business
owners using websites such as Facebook, LinkedIn
and Twitter to screen potential employees.
As the line between professional and personal
online personas blurs, international research shows
almost 50 percent of employers are using social
media to perform online checks on job candidates.
The question for employers remains: what should
business owners be looking for when screening
potential candidates via social media?
Whichever social media sites you choose to
check, there are two key questions to keep
in mind. The first is, are there any immediate
red flags that might deter you from hiring this
candidate? The other is, from what you’ve seen
and read about them online, do you believe
they would be a good fit for your business?
References to drinking and drug use are obvious
red flags, while other warning signs can range
from making disparaging comments about
previous employers and colleagues to overall
poor communication skills.
Facebook may give employers an opportunity
to view a candidate’s photo and an outline of their
interests, though the majority of users have their
privacy options set to block anyone who isn’t their
‘friend’ from viewing their personal information,
photos, or comments.
Twitter is a great deal more public, and most
users allow anyone to view their Twitter-stream
of comments, links and interaction unhindered.
Monitoring a candidate’s Twitter profile can give
employers valuable insights into their interests,
their opinions, and how they present themselves
online.
Designed as a professional social network where
users can connect and share, upload their resumé,
add details of their professional experience and
interests, and gain recommendations from previous
employers and business associates to share online,
LinkedIn is perhaps one of the most valuable
social media platforms for business owners to
monitor when screening job applicants.
When screening a potential employee’s LinkedIn profile, there are a few key elements to take into
consideration.
Does their online resumé match that
submitted during the application process?
If there are any anomalies or omissions, it may
pay to check which details are correct. You
may also find that candidates have occupied
professional positions of interest and failed
to mention them on their CV due to a lack
of relevance.
Who are their connections?
Networking can be one of the most difficult
skills to master in business – so if you come across
a candidate who seems to have mastered the art
and offers an impressive network of professional
contacts, they may be worth calling in for a
follow-up interview. A substantial business
network could also potentially equate to a
great network of contacts for your business.
What are their interests?
If you’re looking for a well-rounded candidate
with a genuine interest in their field of experience
and expertise, browse their profile and see if they
have joined any relevant LinkedIn Groups.
Read their recommendations
One of the great things about LinkedIn is that
it allows users to recommend each other based
on past professional experiences. You can read
recommendations from previous employers and
colleagues to get a sense of your prospective
employee’s work ethic and capabilities. And
unlike letters of recommendation of old, there
is no opportunity to create a recommendation
that has not come directly from an identifiable
referee – as they link directly to their own site.
As the foundational social network for online business engagement, LinkedIn is likely the best social
media platform for business owners to screen job candidates. As for other websites, such as Facebook
and Twitter, it is key to remember that the majority of social media spaces are designed to be just that
– social spaces, not online portfolios thoughtfully assembled to put a candidate’s best business foot
forward. However, they do give a good insight into the candidate’s personality – an important
consideration when deciding whether they are a good ‘fit’ for your organisation and your team.
