Oh my goodness, it’s December once again, and excitement is in the air! The holiday countdown is underway, and I am enjoying hearing about family traditions from many of your children. It’s hard to think about the holiday season without also thinking about all the parties, family get-togethers, and large holiday meals that go hand-in-hand with the season. Far be it from me to suggest making changes in our ways of celebrating the holidays. However, I read an interesting study, which is worth thinking about, at least during the more “normal” times. This particular study sought to identify foods consumed more frequently by obese children (compared to non-obese children) and whether this frequency is associated with eating foods prepared away from home. As we all know, over the last decade there has been a shift away from eating meals only at home to dining out (or ordering out), and restaurants continue to serve ever larger portions of foods that tend to be higher in fat and calories than meals prepared at home. Not surprisingly, findings of this study demonstrated that obese children consumed more foods away from home than did non-obese children. Larger portions of their diets were high in fat, grains, meats, potato chips, and sugar-sweetened drinks (particularly sodas). Interestingly, obese and non-obese children did not differ in the proportion of their total caloric intake derived from sugar. Although both groups’ intake of fresh fruits and vegetables were less than recommended, non-obese children were more likely to consume fruit and fruit-juices as well as cheese. The authors of this study conclude (obviously) that children and adolescents (and a lot of adults as well) need to limit sugar-sweetened drinks and access to foods away from home. Even though the solution seems obvious, it just isn’t always an easy fix. Busy families have decreasing time and energy for daily home–prepared meals. Maybe a heightened awareness can at least have a mediating effect on our choices of foods when we eat out. Anyway, that’s something to think about when it comes time to make those New Year’s resolutions. During this month which holds such meaning for so many of us, please allow me to express my appreciation for the little niche I occupy here at Rodgers Forge. And thank you for remembering to notify me of the absences of your children. It remains my privilege to be your children’s nurse. Wishing you a season of comfort and joy, Gail Shapira [email protected] 410-296-2437 PAGE 5 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PHYSICAL EDUCATION NEWS….. Wow, December is already! In Physical Education during the month of November, the students had the opportunity to experience the game of soccer. Students participated in activities that related to the basic skills of soccer (passing, dribbling and shooting). Students completed the unit with a small sided soccer tournament in order to apply these skills in a game situation. Students had the choice to participate in a competitive bracket or a fun bracket to make all students comfortable and successful at their level. Also, during the month of November, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students wrapped up a Cross Country Unit. During this unit students created, monitored and evaluated individual goals in order to reflect on their effort level. During December, students will be participating in a unit on bowling. Students will learn basic lane setup, proper mechanics to control the ball while rolling toward the target, basic scorekeeping and vocabulary related to bowling. During the last lesson of this unit students will participate in a Rock and Bowl. Bowling is a great family activity in the winter time, either at a bowling alley or even at home. At home, recycle empty plastic bottles to use as pins for a bowling ball almost any type would work. If you want keep score, do so by playing bingo or graphing number of strikes and spares. Please continue to remind your child to wear proper tennis shoes to P.E. days, I want all students to be able to participate but safety is our number one priority. JUMP ROPE FOR HEART Jump into the fight against Heart Disease On February 28, 2017 from 3:45 pm-5:00pm, our students will jump into the fight against heart disease and stroke with Jump Rope for Heart. Look for more information to be sent home in December! HELP!!! As you enjoy the holiday season…please remember to keep collecting those coke reward points. The reward codes can be found underneath the bottle caps or the inside the cardboard cases from products like Dasani Water, POWERADE and other Coca-Cola products. These points will help RFES earn equipment for the Physical Education program. Last year we earned over $350.00 in free equipment. So, if you come across a few Coke reward points please input the codes at mycokerewards.com and donate to Rodgers Forge Elementary. Or if you would rather send them to Mrs. Celenza, I will gladly enter the donation for RFES! Thank you for your support of P.E.!!! Happy Holidays, Mrs. Celenza PAGE 6 RODGERS FORGE CHRONICLES VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 7 RODGERS FORGE CHRONICLES VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 8 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 9 RODGERS FORGE CHRONICLES VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 10 RODGERS FORGE CHRONICLES VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 11 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 12 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 13 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 14 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 15 R O D G E R S FO R G E C HR O N I C LE S VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 PAGE 16 RODGERS FORGE CHRONICLES VOLUME 1, ISSUE 1 Instrumental Music: The fourth graders are starting the String Unit and will be able to have hands on experience with the violin. While learning the different types of string instruments, the students will discover the different ways in which one can produce sound on a string instrument, the factors that affect picth and its role in the orchestra. The fifth graders are preparing for their Winter Concert. In just two short months the students have learned so much. At the concert they will be playing as soli groups so that each instruments’ unique qualities may be heard. Once the concert is finished we will be starting to learn ensemble music in band and string orchestra in preparation for our spring concert. We look forward to seeing on December13, 2016.
