Coppin State University Exceeds
Fundraising Goal
C
oppin State University set an all-time yearly giving record
during the 2012-2013 year by raising $2,310,727. The results
surpassed the 2011-2012 total of $1,644,122.
“We are very appreciative of the support we received from
all our donors,” stated Foundation Board Chairman Reginald
Exum. “Our focus now is to do even better in 2013-2014. CSU
students will benefit from the generosity of so many loyal Coppin
supporters.”
Alumni giving also increased as 7.5 percent of alumni made
gifts during the fiscal year compared to 6.5 percent in 2011-2012.
“We have established a goal of 10 percent Alumni Participation
in 2013-2014,” states Doug Dalzell, vice president of Institutional
Advancement. “Our ultimate goal is to lead all public HBCU’s
in alumni participation rates. It will take three to five years to get
there but I’m confident that with increased outreach programs it
will happen.”
Individual giving focused on scholarships while grants and
gifts from corporations and foundations supported new and ongoing initiatives of the University.
A significant portion of gifts received goes to support student
enrichment programs and scholarships. “I hope to enter Medical
School and attain a career in Global Health,” states Nomazwe
Ncube, a junior biology major. “A career in biomedical research
also still remains a second option. For the summer, I will be
interning in Zimbabwe alongside a Johns Hopkins professor
aiding her in her research concerning sanitation and its effect on
child growth rates, with a special emphasis on related diseases
such as cholera.”
Coppin relies heavily on support it receives from alumni and
friends.

Annual Coppin State University
Golf Classic
T
he Annual Coppin State University
Golf Classic continues to be a
favorite among participants. This
year marked the 11th annual golf event
and raised over $30,000 from 55
sponsors and 117 players. The money
will support the Senior Opportunity
Scholarship (SOS) Program which
provides
financial
assistance
to undergraduate seniors who
demonstrate academic achievement
and financial need. We hope you join
us in 2014 on Monday, May 19, 2013
at the University of Maryland Golf
Course.

Constellation Energy Grant Funds Innovative
Research Project
C
onstellation Energy announced the award of
$50,000 to Coppin State University to fund a
cooperative program between the University and
Bluford Drew Jemison STEM Academy to research
new energy technologies. The grant
is part of Constellation’s 2012 E2
Energy to Educate program that
provides funding for innovative
student and community research
projects.
According to Kenneth Cornew,
Constellation Energy president and
CEO, “We are proud to sponsor
research and education programs
that will help prepare a new
generation for the energy opportunities and challenges
that lie ahead. This year’s grant winners highlight the
innovation, new ideas and creative approaches that will
be essential as we continue to drive toward a sustainable
energy future.”
Students from both institutions will do research
on nanocrystalline solar cells, silicon solar cells, multijunction solar cells, and nanotechnology. Students
will explore how these technologies are developed
and applied and what makes
them succeed while others fail.

solar technology industry will
mentor students as they design
projects and explore career
opportunities in solar technology.
“We are excited for our
students and those of Bluford Drew
Jemison,” said Dr. Jamal Uddin,
assistant professor of Natural
Sciences at CSU. “On behalf of both institutions
I would like to thank Constellation Energy for this
investment in the futures of our students.” Dr. Uddin
will serve as the principal investigator for the project.
He was also the 2012 winner of the University System
of Maryland Elkins Professorship.
Citi Foundation Makes $40,000 Grant to
Coppin State University
C
oppin State University was awarded $40,000
by Citi Foundation to fund the CSU Freshman
Male Initiative (FMI) and the College of Health
Professions Living Learning Community (LLC).
The funds will support both efforts as they work
to improve CSU retention and graduation rates.
Since 2009, FMI, a mentoring program for firsttime freshman male students, paired its participants
with matriculating Coppin State University juniors and
seniors. LLC is an academic learning and community
living program for first-year pre-nursing students.
“We are excited about Citi Foundation’s continued
support of Coppin State University,” states Al Essien,
assistant vice president for philanthropy. “These two
programs have shown they can positively affect CSU
retention and graduation rates. Working with students
in their freshman year increases their chances for future
success.”

Both programs provide first-year students with
academic development, personal growth, social
and cultural enrichment, study strategies, academic
planning, financial aid coaching, financial literacy and
career development.
“Citi understands the importance of empowering
students with the support and resources they need to
complete post-secondary education,” said Reginald
Exum, vice president for Community Development
at Citi. “With funding from the Citi Foundation, these
programs will not only ensure that students persist
during the crucial period between their first and second
years of enrollment, but that they are also equipped
with the financial capability and know-how to aid them
in the years beyond college.”
This is the fifth sizeable grant that Coppin State
University has received from Citi Foundation.

Foundation Merit Scholarship
Fund Has New Donor
D
r. Clayton McNeill and his wife, Pamela are lifetime
members of Coppin’s Alumni Association. Dr.
McNeill, class of ‘69, and Pamela, class of ‘70 were both
education majors.
Dr. McNeill served as vice president of student life and
executive vice president of administration and finance at
Coppin State University. During this time, he established
two endowment scholarships—one scholarship is named
for him and his wife, and the other is named for his mother
and father.
In 2013, Dr. McNeill and his wife once again
demonstrated their commitment to Coppin by giving back
to their Alma Mater. They committed $25,000 towards a
Merit Scholarship endowment. This gift will be matched
by the CSU Development Foundation, thereby establishing
a fully funded $50,000 Merit Scholarship for high achieving
incoming freshmen.
It is safe to say that Dr.
McNeill will always have a
special place in his heart for
Coppin. Since his retirement
in 2006, he still visits the
campus, and he serves on
various committees for the alumni. Dr. McNeill attends
many of the women’s and men’s basketball games. Dr.
McNeill was one of the first inductees into the CSU Athletic
Hall of Fame.
“I love Coppin and I believe in its mission. I want to
help Coppin continue to graduate talented young people
who are prepared to make a positive difference in this
world,” said Dr. McNeill. Dr. McNeill is the fourth donor
to establish a Foundation Merit Scholarship since the
program’s inception last October.
