“I was really nervous, before I turned up to my first session”

Shannon Howarth
Shannon got into coaching when the local club she played for were
looking for some players already involved in the club to help out with
taster sessions for younger ages.
“I was really
nervous,
before I turned
up to my first
session”
From this she was asked to coach one of the teams formed from the taster
sessions. Although she was a confident player, Shannon admits that the
thought of coaching was a bit scarier “I was really nervous before I turned up
to my first session, but once the session started these nerves were completely
gone.” And that was 5 years ago….
Since then she has gone from strength to strength within her coaching, and
currently coaches the Cheshire FA U’16s girl’s schools representative squad,
as well as at a local community session coaching grassroots football, for boys
and girls aged 5 – 15 through Trafford Community Leisure.
She explains that the thing she enjoys most about coaching is “seeing the
satisfaction sport can bring to young people who may not academically excel”
as well as “seeing the difference sport can make
to young people’s lives who may see sport as a
release from other commitments”
Coaching has also given her opportunities which
she never would have had. As she explains she
gained the opportunity of a lifetime to “be chosen
to go to Namibia for 2 months on a UK Sport
programme to coach in schools to try and
promote a healthy active lifestyle through sport”
Shannon has achieved a massive amount
through coaching, and also inspired and
motivated people of all ages and abilities to get
involved in football.
