Bringing Business, Economic and Common Sense…. Lt. Governor of Utah Greg Bell smiling at a quote Mani Grewal just mentioned of Noble Prize Winner Economist James Heckman about Investing in Quality Early Childhood Development! (Photo by Richard Green) For a Better Future Tomorrow…. Biography In 1965, at the inauguration of a charitable hospital in a small town ‘Sudhar’ India, I was chosen to welcome Hubert H. Humphrey, the Vice President of United States of America. Mr. Humphrey personally extended me the invitation to the United States Senate Chamber. I was only 5 years old. Today, I am 52, and like you, I am proud and blessed to call Draper my home and living my American Dream among you. I have been happily married to Lippa Grewal for 24 years and we have one daughter, Shehnoor Grewal, 22, who just graduated from the law school at the U of U. Our 12 year old dog, Rachu Grewal, just went through chemotherapy and is a survivor. In fact, lot of Draperites call Lippa and Rachu, ‘A Lady with the Black Dog’ because they have been on the Draper Trails for over a decade together. I proudly worked for the United States Chamber of Commerce from 1996 to 2002. I will bring the same hard work and diligence to the City of Draper, which earned me the President's Club Award, twice, by the U.S. Chamber, world's largest federation of business! I am a University Graduate with over 25 years of entrepreneurial experience in many countries, I will bring business, economic and common sense to the Council. I am honored to serve on the Multicultural Commission of the State of Utah. Our Governor, Hon. Gary Herbert, again appointed me for a second term on the Commission and I work closely with Lt. Governor, Greg Bell, on many important issues including Economic Development, Education, Youth, Health, and Corrections. I am the founding member of FoodForHomeless.Org (a local charitable organization to fight homelessness and hunger) and Asian American Council of Utah (which promotes the brotherhood, peace, cultural and heritage aspects). I served on the Board of Utah Asian Chamber of Commerce as Vice President for four years. I voluntarily raised money, food and other items for the Victims' families of the Crandall Canyon Mine Disaster in 2007. As a Board Member of the Rock Springs (Wyoming) Chamber of Commerce for four years, I worked on many issues including Tourism, Wild Horses, Multiculturalism, 4-H and other local community related issues. We donated land from our property to erect monuments of Mormon Trail, Oregon Trail and Pony Express, in Farson, Wyoming. ‘Home of the Big Cone’, the business was spread on 70 acres of land and comprised of world famous ice cream parlor and gift store, a bar, a convenience store with gas, diesel and propane, a quilt and embroidery shop, an RV and a Trailer Park and many tenants including USPS, USDA and a trucking company. We ran our own water and sewer systems. Many called it "Running Your Own Town". I love sightseeing, traveling, badminton, chess, ATV, target shooting, hiking, singing, flying, mnemonics, Face Reading, motorbike, wildlife, Western movies, inventions, volunteering and being frugal! Thank you very much for giving me the opportunity to introduce myself. You can count on me to do 'The job'. Can I count on your support? Vote for Mani Grewal Draperville to Draper We have lot of History and Heritage that we are all proud of in Draper. Our beloved city is uniquely located in two counties and valleys with an area of 30 square mile, 90 miles of trails, some 40000 residents with an annual household income of about $100,000. Folks, perhaps you are the Second, Third or even Fourth Generation Draper resident, but even as a First, I remember the corn fields, the dairy, and the road that ended at 1300 East and 12300 South, or Draper Heights or when there was nothing atop the South Mountain. Our visible business partners such as Swire Coca Cola, IKEA, eBay, 1-800-Contacts and Investools are large employers along with the National Guard and the Prison. The 700 acre prison, employing over 1000 people and housing 3500 inmates, may be moved to Tooele, Utah at a cost of $700mn, freeing land for technology based corporate world, generating $20bn and up to 40000 jobs in Draper. We have seen tremendous growth and a fast track development in our City in the last decade alone, which has changed the landscape, in multi dimensions. Our pockets of vacant land parcels and mountains are fast filling the demand and need of developers for residential and housing purposes as well as multi story business complexes and offices and shops. Who had envisioned the Suncrest Development on the South Mountain, the Corporate Empires on Highland Drive, the Neighborhood Walmart, the Bangerter Highway Corridor Development and the State Street Development two decades ago? There are thousands of acres of development waiting to happen at the South Mountain alone. Our infrastructure saw an unprecedented presence and expansion in the last couple of years alone. The new Trax Station, The Senior Center, the new school and changes to our traffic patterns have greatly affected our neighborhoods. With the presence of the new signage and development of most of the Trails, the horse riders, the dog walkers, the bicyclists, the joggers, paraglide enthusiasts, hikers, rock climbers, ATV and 4 Wheelers, runners and nature lovers to the South are greatly looking forward to enjoy the wilderness without disturbing our fauna and flora and environment. Often all, in our city on the Lone Peak, near the landmark Movie Rock (site of filming Devils Brigade, 1968) the sign at the Outlaw Cabin reads "Enjoy it, Don't Destroy it!." Are we ready for the next phase of fast paced development? We have a growing list of challenges that is associated with the growth and demand of people and businesses who want to be our neighbors and partners. Let us be good neighbors, good hosts and welcome the new Dreamers, while sharing and enjoying our unique life styles and values. Our City… Our People… Our Way!
