2nd Grade Math 2nd GRADE MAJOR FOCUS AREAS MATH GAMES AND RESOURCES 1. Extending understanding of base-ten notation o Count by 5s, 10s, and 100s o Understand that the digits in each place represent amounts of thousands, hundreds, tens, or ones (e.g., 853 is 8 hundreds + 5 tens + 3 ones). Fluency Expectations: From previous grades, students in second grade should be fluent (have quick recall from memory and multiple strategies to use) in adding and subtracting within 10 using mental math strategies. 2. Building fluency with addition and subtraction o Solve problems within 1000. o Mentally calculate sums and differences for numbers with only tens or only hundreds. 3. Using standard units of measure o Use rulers and other measurement tools to measure in both inches and centimeters. 4. Describing and analyzing shapes o Describe shapes by examining their sides and angles. o Use shapes to make other shapes. The 2nd grade standards are broken into 4 areas: Operations and Algebraic Thinking – Represent and solve problems involving addition/subtraction; Work with equal groups to gain foundations for multiplication Number and Operations in Base Ten – Understand place value; Use place value to add and subtract Measurement and Data – Measure and estimate lengths in standard units; Work with time and money; Represent and interpret data in graphs Geometry – Reason with shapes and their attributes Second grade has 2 major fluency goals: *2.OA.A.2 – Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies. By the end of grade 2, know from memory all sums of two single-digit numbers. *2.NBT.B.5 – Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value. Card Games: These games can be played to improve basic fact recall and mental math strategies to meet the fluency expectations.
