Title: Important Information Regarding 100% Juice
The “Downsizing” of Products
As previously addressed in VB (2010 - #6), some national brand juice manufacturers have reduced the
sizes of their refrigerated cartons of “100% juice” from 64-ounces to 59-ounces. These brands include
Tropicana and Florida’s Natural (and there may be other brands in the retail market across the state).
These 59-ounce juices are not NYS WIC approved and cannot be purchased with NYS WIC
checks. These “downsized” products have caused some confusion for WIC participants and store
cashiers because the new cartons look like the older cartons that contained 64-ounces. WIC participants
are now being advised not to choose these smaller cartons for their WIC juice purchases.
Please be sure that all store cashiers know the following:

The only allowable container sizes for WIC juice are specified on the NYS WIC Acceptable
Foods Card (Foods Card) and on the NYS WIC check. These include: 48-ounce (or 11.5-12
ounce concentrates) for women, and 64-ounce (or 16-ounce concentrates) for children.

Containers of refrigerated 100% juice must be carefully checked to ensure that the number of
ounces listed on the carton is the same as the number printed on the WIC check.
Welch’s 100% Grape Juice with Fiber; Welch’s 100% Grape Juice with Calcium
These products are not NYS WIC approved juices (they do not meet WIC’s nutritional
requirements). WIC participants are now being advised not to choose these products for their WIC juice
purchases. The “regular” versions of Welch’s Grape Juice (purple, white), listed on the Foods Card,
continue to be NYS WIC approved.

The Discontinuation of the 46-ounce Container of Juicy Juice
Nestlé will be discontinuing distribution of the 46-ounce plastic container of Juicy Juice effective April
2011. This change does not affect the NYS WIC Foods Card as this size container is not approved for
purchase.
The approved sizes for Juicy Juice include: the 48-ounce plastic container in three flavors (Grape,
Apple, and Orange Tangerine), the 64-ounce container (“Any Flavor”), and the 11.5-ounce concentrate
(“Any Flavor”).
Nestlé is adding two new juice blends to its line of 48-ounce plastic bottles of Juicy Juice. These new
flavors (Kiwi Strawberry, Punch) are not approved for purchase by NYS WIC participants at this
time. Only the three flavors listed on the Foods Card are approved for purchase with NYS WIC checks.
WIC participants are now being advised of this information.
