Next Stage Theatre Company presents

Habeas Corpus
Wednesday 25th January Scary Little Girls present
7.30pm
I’m Sorry, I Haven’t a Minute
by Alan Bennett
Alan Bennett’s Habeas Corpus, set in the late 1960s,
has all the ingredients of a classic, but surreal, farce
spiced with the warmth and humanity of Bennett’s
razor-sharp wit.
Following their recent tour of It’s Your Round! Pub
Quiz, Scary Little Girls make their debut at The
Mission Theatre with this delightfully bonkers Sorry I
Haven’t a Minute! cabaret radio show.
Dr and Mrs Wicksteed, his sister Connie, their
hypochondriac son Dennis, and Connie’s long-term
fiancé Canon Throbbing, live in Hove - a seaside
town as yet untouched by the Permissive Society.
But beneath the surface hidden desires are bubbling,
and the arrival of Lady Rumpers from the colonies,
her gorgeous daughter Felicity, and, coincidentally,
Sir Percy Shorter, the president of the British Medical
Association, prove a combustible mixture.
Audiences are invited to join the team of This Evening,
a radio magazine show with wannabe television hosts
Summer Hill (Rebecca Mordan) and Charlie Bray (Joel
Daffurn). Have this husband and wife duo got what it
takes to climb the entertainment ladder and follow in
the footsteps of their heroes, Richard and Judy, or will
their home at Mid-East Midlands Digital Magic FM be
as far as they go?
It’s Mr Shanks, a ‘falsies’ fitter from Leatherhead keen to provide a professional service to his
customers - who triggers the explosion, and a
positive tsunami of mistaken identities and surging
passions ensues.
Habeas Corpus bursts with fun and will prove to be
the perfect post-Christmas pick-me-up. Book now to
avoid disappointment.
Audiences will take part in features such as Up
Your Way, Summer’s Makeover, Dirk and Daphne
Chronicles, and for those who believe... Summer Sees!
Join us for live, on-air mayhem with your favourite
radio hosts as they rurally tour the British Isles trying
to boost their audience figures!
“An inspirational combination of cutting edge cabaret
and smart improvisation.” Diva
“These literary spoof shows are much, much harder
than they look. Luckily, this easy-going and silly
afternoon show created by Scary Little Girls…is daft,
enjoyable and fun.” The Scotsman

Thursday 9th & Friday 10th March Forged Line Dance Company presents
7.30pm
Lina
by Charles Dickens, adapted for the stage by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod
The talented and highly-acclaimed Next Stage
Youth Theatre Company excel as they bring this
gritty adaptation of Dickens’ least-sentimental love
story to the stage with a cast of some of his most
unforgettable characters.
Lina explores the lives and obsessions of brother and
sister William and Caroline Herschel. Both talented
musicians and celebrated astronomers, they studied
the universe and mapped the stars from their garden
in 18th century Bath.
Whilst at his parents’ graveside, Pip is accosted by
Magwitch, an escaped convict from a prison ship.
Terrified, he is forced to help the man to get away.
An unexpected invitation to the house of rich old
Miss Havisham forces Pip into the path of her
beautiful, cruel ward Estella and their strange,
ruthless games. After an anonymous benefactor
grants him a small fortune, Pip turns his back on his
humble life as a blacksmith’s apprentice. Leaving his
sister, her husband Joe Gargery and the winsome
Biddy, Pip moves to London to become a gentleman
in the hopes of winning Estella. But he has no idea of
the dangers that await him there, or from where his
salvation will come.
A new dance work from Bath-based company
Forged Line, Lina delves into a caring yet complex
relationship, where family ties are tested by individual
ambition. Music merges into science, art becomes
mathematics, and a brother and sister, far from home,
change how we see the universe forever.
Great Expectations is an unforgettable tale from one
of our greatest storytellers. Come to The Mission
Theatre and let over 30 of Next Stage’s talented
young actors entertain you with this fast-paced,
imaginatively-staged production which will delight
audiences young and old alike.
This intimate and emotionally-charged duet is inspired
by the themes of creativity, invention and frustration
that shaped the siblings’ extraordinary story. It
features music composed by William Herschel.
“The two dancers balanced with real grace the
evolution that led William and Caroline Herschel
to become leading astronomers. The movement
echoed the discovery process; at times explosive,
with both dancers rushing across the stage like
synapses firing ideas; sometimes delighting in the
mundane.” Audience member

She’s jived in Japan, indulged in Italy, feasted in

it’s obviously time to take stock. So what’s the next
move, Sarah? Gay Paree has been magnifique but
maybe it’s time for a change?
In this funny and moving account of her globetrotting
life so far, Sarah is packing her bags, waving au revoir and singing brand new songs all about it. Clear away
the clutter… Reviews from Sarah Tullamore’s Edinburgh Fringe

“There is something layered and special at the heart
of this production” ★★★★ TV Bomb
“…hilarious, occasionally moving, this show left me
wanting to sit down with Sarah and seek her advice
on life…” ★★★★ Remotegoat
“The script is tight, the Franglish spot on, and
the softer moments touching. A charming

The Dreadful Penny
My Brilliant Divorce
by Geraldine Aron
Angela’s husband has had a mid-life crisis and a midEuropean fling; Angela is left with the dog.
Initially exultant, Angela soon finds herself emotionally
bereft and with her self-confidence at an all-time
low. Rejecting or accepting the well-meaning advice
and consolation of friends, interfering mother, critical
daughter and silently-accusing dog, Angela slowly,
and at times painfully, rebuilds her life.
An insightful and hilarious exploration of what life can
be like for a 40-something, suddenly single woman,
My Brilliant Divorce is wittily observant, achingly
funny and heart-wrenchingly real. Geraldine Aron’s play is brought to The Mission Theatre
by the talented Kay Francksen, who has performed
to sell-out audiences in Bath and Bristol with her onewoman show Shirley Valentine.
Kay first played Angela in My Brilliant Divorce in 2006. “Very best wishes to cast and crew of My Brilliant
Divorce. Hope you have a great success with it.
Go girls, go!” Geraldine Aron (playwright).
“There are some great jokes…but there are also
sudden shafts of piercing emotional truth… A
peculiarly frosty heart is required to resist My Brilliant
Divorce.” Daily Telegraph.
The Dreadful Penny is a ripping comedy adventure.
The year is 1882 and Cecil Snerd has invented the
world’s first sprung leather bicycle saddle; a blessed
relief to velocipedists everywhere, who have already
dubbed the Penny-farthing: ‘the man slicer!’
Cecil, cheated out of his invention by teutonic cad
Hans Von Bulge, languishes in debtor’s prison. It
is left to his only son, Mortimer, to clear his father’s
name and prevent Von Bulge acquiring the saddle’s
patent for himself.
On his perilous quest, Mortimer is kidnapped by
pirates, trapped in a pyramid, pursued on the Orient
Express and finally attempts to outrun a hot air
balloon on a penny farthing.
Playing Up Theatre Company makes its debut at
The Mission Theatre with this rip-roaring show; a
fun-packed evening for all.
Bath Chronicle reviews for The Dreadful Penny:
“A furious pace, rapid costume and scenery changes
plus non-stop jokes from the totally committed (they
should be) cast make for a fun, unmissable evening.”
“One of the city’s best theatre companies!”

Second Sun
Monday 22nd - Wednesday 24th May
Matinee Wednesday 24th Bath Spa Theatre Society presents
7.30 pm 2pm
Our Country’s Good
by Thomas Keneally and Timberlake Wertenbaker
In Second Sun, the mighty have fallen. And evil has
won against all odds. No one can foresee the future.
Not even the Gods. Who will be there to save them?
Who will be there to speak for the voiceless against
the three-faced foes that no one chose? Who will lead
the country into ruin?
This powerful and challenging work is ideally suited
to the talents of Novato Theatre Company. The
actors’ ability to show, through their physicality and
creativity, the landscape of conflict as it unfolds
across the stage is second to none. A thoughtprovoking production presented with the hallmark
excellence for which this exceptional group has
become renowned.
Novato Theatre Company was founded in 2012
building on the success of its sister company, Novato
Dance. The performances are entirely devised and
explore a range of theatre styles including physical,
symbolism, expressionism and comedy. The company
is comprised of Bath Spa University students,
whose passion for their art enables them to create
memorable productions.
“How do we know what humanity lies hidden under
the rags and filth of a mangled life?”
Australia, 1788. The First Fleet lands at Sydney Cove.
Half of those aboard are convicts – murderers,
thieves, and prostitutes – exiled to the shores of this
strange new land. Eager to impress his superiors,
Second Lieutenant Ralph Clark takes up the task
of bringing culture to the burgeoning colony by
offering to direct the country’s first play. With a cast
of criminals, only two copies of the script, and some
of his actors facing the noose, the project seems
doomed from the start.
Our Country’s Good explores the redemptive
power of art, asking if it is better to punish – or to
rehabilitate?
Bath Spa Theatre Society returns to The Mission
Theatre after its highly-acclaimed production of Punk
Rock last year.
This amateur production of Our Country’s Good is
presented by special arrangement with SAMUEL
FRENCH, LTD.

Thursday 6th July Hurn-Davey Productions presents
7.30pm
Hancock and Co.
Birdsong
performed by James Hurn: one man, many voices
by Sebastian Faulks, adapted for the stage by Rachel Wagstaff
Birdsong is a powerful dramatisation of Sebastian
Faulks’s profoundly moving novel. It charts the
tempestuous affair between a British Officer, Stephen
Wraysford, and a French woman, Isabelle Azaire.
Meeting in 1910, the young Stephen falls hopelessly
in love with Rene Azaire’s wife whilst staying at their
home in Amiens, northern France. Fleeing Azaire’s
wrath, the lovers run away together, but in personal
turmoil and with the looming threat of war enveloping
Europe, Stephen and Isabelle’s fledgling love
founders, but neither forgets the other.
Following James Hurn’s sell-out visit to The Mission
Theatre in November 2016, he is back by popular
demand with a stunning one-man, many voices, show,
celebrating over 60 years of Hancock’s
Half Hour.
On this, his second visit, James – a talented actor
and impressionist – will be performing a brand-new
programme including one classic episode of
Hancock’s Half Hour, and two episodes he has
written himself in the same style as Ray Galton
and Alan Simpson, with James voicing the entire
cast. James is a master at recreating the accents
and personas of such iconic 20th century British
favourites as Tony Hancock, Sidney James, Hattie
Jacques, Bill Kerr and Kenneth Williams.
Six years after their meeting, Stephen is back in the
same region of France, this time as a young, English
Lieutenant, leading his men at the Battle of the
Somme in July 1916.
Playwright Rachel Wagstaff uses flash-backs in her
haunting adaptation of Birdsong to juxtapose the
beauty and passion of Stephen’s pre-war experiences
with the horrors of war-torn battlegrounds.
Showcasing a large cast of talented actors drawn
from Next Stage’s adult and youth companies,
Birdsong opens at The Mission Theatre, Bath before
a tour to the Minack Theatre, Cornwall in July. Crafted from the ruins of war and the indestructibility
of love, Birdsong is a play that speaks to all.

by Phoebe Eclair-Powell
“I log on for seven hours. And it’s like my whole room
opens up, space, time and all the continuums… I am
wired, awake, my mind full, my eyes fuller. I can’t
even blink any more but I can’t stop looking, staring
into this space where everyone else is.”
What makes you a man? No one seems to have any
idea. We don’t really tend to talk about it. The only
way to find out is to throw yourself into the mind of
one…
Phoebe Eclair-Powell’s Wink is a thrilling modern
drama which follows a search for identity in an age of
social media, sexting and deleted web searches; an
age when untreated mental illness is killing more
young men than war. Wink examines two lives
veering dangerously close to collision, asking us
what separates the man from the boy?
