Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!
Day 1
Luke 19:37-40 describes a wonderful time of celebration as Jesus entered Jerusalem shortly
before his death. Look up the passage and answer the following questions.

Pray
Lord, I don’t want the rocks to cry out because I am not praising You.
I will praise You forever. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Day 2
This month’s hymn melody was written by one of the most famous composers of all time. Before we tell
you the composer’s name, see if you can identify him from these facts about his life.
He was born in Germany in 1770 & began studying piano, organ & viola at an early age. By the age of 7,
he was performing & his first piece of music was published when he was 12. His childhood was not very
happy, for his father drank heavily and pushed his son to be the next Mozart. When he was 16, he
auditioned for Mozart & began studying in the city of Vienna. Not long after arriving in the city, he was
forced to return home to his dying mother. He soon became the caregiver of his younger brothers. Five
years later he was able to return to Vienna where he soon made a name for himself playing piano for the
rich & famous. Any ideas on who the composer is?
Read more tomorrow and see if you can figure it out.
Pray
Lord, thank You for giving this man so much talent to make great music for You.
Help me to use my talents for Your glory.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Day 3
More tragedy struck this great musician when he began losing his hearing in his 20s. He became
very angry & went into hiding. Although his hearing loss slowed down his performing career, it did
not slow down his creativity. To hear sounds, he cut off the legs of his piano & placed the instrument
on the floor so he could hear the vibrations in the floor when he played. By the time he was 50, he
was totally deaf. During his life he wrote 9 symphonies, 5 piano concertos, 32 piano sonatas, as well
as string quartets, sonatas for piano and violin, opera, and vocal music. Today he is considered to be
one of the greatest composers who ever lived, maybe even the greatest.
Do you know who the composer is? His name is Ludwig Van _____________________!
Pray
Lord, thank You for helping Mr. Beethoven use his talent even though he had an obstacle in his way,
like hearing loss. Help me to use my talents for You no matter what gets in my way.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Day 4
Day 5
Henry van Dyke was an American author,
educator & Presbyterian minister. While teaching
at Princeton University he became friends with
the university’s president, Woodrow Wilson.
When Wilson later became President of the
United States, he appointed van Dyke as U.S.
Ambassador to the Netherlands and Luxembourg.
Van Dyke loved the joyful sound of Beethoven’s
Ninth Symphony, which is often called “Ode to
Joy.” He had often thought that it would make a
great hymn. One day in 1911 while gazing at the
beautiful Berkshire Mountains in Massachusetts,
he got his inspiration to write the words to Joyful,
Joyful. I think the words fit with Beethoven’s
beautiful music.
Create a picture of what this joyful hymn is
describing and share it with your family.
Pray
Lord, help me to remember Your beauty around
me. Your creation makes me joyful
and we adore You.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
Pray
Lord, thank You for melting my clouds of sadness and filling us
with the light of day. We are full of joy because of You.
In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
