Hudson Valley Heritage and New York Heritage Digital Collections
May 13, 2014
We are fortunate in this region to have a very useful and interesting digital history
resource. It’s called the Hudson River Valley Heritage Project (HRVH), and it is a database
containing primary print materials and images covering the entire Mid-Hudson Valley.
There are currently dozens of participating institutions.

For more information or other reference and collection development assistance,
call the Reference & Information Desk at Adriance Memorial Library at (845) 485-3445 or (800) 804-0092, extension 3702.
You can search by different fields, and then narrow your results by clicking on terms in the left-hand frame (called
facets). There is so much in here—letters, postcards, maps, photographs…
The database includes parts of the historical Beers Atlases that show landowners for the time period covered,
parcel by parcel. It’s a fascinating snapshot of our local environs!

For other parts of New York State, beyond our Hudson Valley, there is the New York Heritage Digital Collection.
There are currently over 170 participating institutions! Most institutions include only a small sample of all the rich
content that is housed in their collections. Hopefully, folks interested in learning more will be inspired to visit the
collections in person to see the entire scope of what is held!

The Empire State Digital Network is partnering with a nationwide effort to compile all of
these historical digital collections into the keyword-searchable Digital Public Library of
America (covered in a previous Tuesday’s Tip on 1/7/14).
These wonderful resources make the past come to life and give younger generations a
window into the rich history of the Hudson Valley, New York State, and many other parts
of our great country! Enjoy!
