4.2 Discussions
In The Clinic movie by James Rabbitts, the main character was Beth. The main character
had the external conflict that consists of Man vs. Man, Man vs. Fate, Man vs. Nature, and Man
vs. Society. Each of these conflicts could be divided based on the conflict that happened in
characters. Like as in Man vs. Man, these conflicts that occurred in character with the other
character that could be divided into six parts, they were: conflict between Cameron and Marvin,
Cameron and Hank, Beth and Ivy, Beth and Duncan, Ms. Shepard and Duncan, and conflict
between Beth with Ms. Shepard. While in Man vs. Fate, I found one conflict only, there is
conflict between Beth and her fate. Also, I found one conflict in Man vs. Nature, there was
conflict between Beth and her friends with the dogs. Finally, in Man vs. Society, I found two
parts conflict, they were conflict between Cameron with the gang of criminal and conflict
between Beth with the gang of criminal. The overall, the conflict caused by the character lied to
other character hoped that the wished or to save her or his life. Also, it was caused by the
different wishes or different opinion about something between characters with the other.
4.2.1 Man vs. Man
Man vs. Man was the type of external conflict that occurred when a character struggling
against another characters. These struggles may be born from moral, religious or social
differences and may be emotional, verbal or physical conflicts. (Hammond, 2010)
1. Conflict between Cameron and Marvin
The Clinic talked about abortion also as the theme of the movie. Abortion in the
movie was not wished by the woman, but the abortion carried out by force. The woman
abducted and anaesthetized to abortion in old clinic. Therefore, the abortion has the main
factor that caused conflict in the movie.
Beth was the main character in the movie. She was a pregnant woman and very
disposed to born the children with safe. She was rooming with Cameron, her fiancé in a
motel. The first conflict in the movie was Beth missing in the motel. It made Cameron
afraid and panic because Beth had pregnant. After he searched high and low for found
Beth, he decided to ask helped by sheriff, namely Marvin. The conflict started when
Cameron asked to Marvin to found Beth. It was caused by Marvin which calmly to
handle Beth’s case and it made Cameron so mad. It was stated in the following quotation:
Marvin : “Do you have any history of mental illness, or amnesia?
You, uh, currently using drugs of any kinds? It‟s a
standard question.”
Cameron: “This is bullshit. Beth is missing, she‟s pregnant, and I
want her found.”
(Act I: 00:17:14)
These quotations clearly explained about the struggles against another character.
Cameron feels that Marvin did not serious and did not care about Beth’s missing. It could
be seems by Marvin’s expression that asking of questions preposterously. He instead
asked to Cameron if he was illness of mental or amnesia. The question did not relevant
with missing of Beth; hence Cameron responding to Marvin about these that bullshit.
Beth was missing, she was pregnant, and Cameron would her found. From the
explanation above, the situation was the struggles that born from the emotional between
characters. Therefore, it indicated conflict Man vs. Man, namely conflict between
Cameron and Marvin.
The conflict started culminated when Marvin gave question to motel’s
receptionist, namely Hank. But, once more Marvin gave questions that could not to found
the existence of Beth. Also, he refused when Cameron with blustery asked to him to
searched Beth in the motel. He instead to order Cameron to lower Cameron’s voice, likes
the following quotations:
Marvin : “Sir, I‟m just gonna ask you to lower your voice”
Cameron : “I will lower my voice when you start to do something to
find my fiancée”
(Act I: 00:17:51)
The quotation above showed that Cameron’s emotion that started rising when he
knew Marvin not serious to searched Beth’s existence. He asked with blustery to Marvin
started to found his fiancee. But, Marvin instead asked him to lower his voice. The
illustrations showed that conflict occurred Man vs. Man. The struggle seems from
emotional and verbal conflict between characters. The next, the struggles caused by the
different wishes, It was the wishes of Cameron to found Beth, but Marvin did not. Thus,
it includes in conflict between Cameron and Marvin.
When Cameron knew about Marvin still did something yet, he tried started made
against to Marvin. But, his worked to found Beth was hopeless. Marvin disabled him by
curry skin coat until unconscious. After that, Marvin brought him by the police’s car. He
was consciousness when got him with handcuffs. He seen Marvin drove within ate
something. He glanced at a pistol near with him and getting a move on got the pistol.
Marvin frightened to death when Cameron threatened him by pistol. Cameron would him
to get out in the car, just as shown in the quotation below:
Cameron: “Get out of the car. Get out of the car! Uncuff me. Fucking
uncuff me. Move.”
(Act II: 00:31:00)
The quotation above was the term of Cameron fallen out in the bad situation. He
got pistol and asks to Marvin to get out of the car also to uncuff him. At last, Marvin set
him free and then he replied to Marvin by handcuffs and bound in the tree. Based the
expressions above, it can be concluded that these conflict Man vs. Man that included in
physical conflict. Also, the conflict between Cameron and Marvin included in verbal
conflict. It showed in Cameron’s utterances that used bad language when he asked to free
himself.
2. Conflict between Cameron and Hank
External conflict that happened between Cameron and Hank not get out of the
missing of Beth. The conflict between them was caused by telling lying of Hank, those
when Marvin asked to him about Beth’s existence, he lied to Cameron that he did not
knew about missing of Beth. But, Cameron did not believed with his false admittance. He
feels about Hank knows about something. Therefore, he accused that Hank was abducted
Beth. His accusation of Hank about knows something really unacceptable by himself,
thus he after look himself. The situation shown in the quotation:
Hank : “Well, look, I could put this up in reception. Ask people
if they‟ve seen her”
Cameron: “You son of a bitch!”
(Act I: 00:17:57)
The quotation above clearly explained that Hank was lying to Cameron. He
refused accusation of Cameron about him that missing of Beth. And then, he instead asks
of Cameron to asked people in the motel if they had seen Beth. Surely, Cameron not
believed with Hank’s confession. Therefore, he used bad language to replied Hank.
Based the utterances above, it clarified that both of speakers has emotional conflict, those
conflict between Cameron and Hank. Surely, it was included in Man vs. Man.
Conflict that happened between Cameron and Hank was caused by telling of
lying, as have done Hank to Cameron. But, Cameron knew that Hank was lying. Thus,
when he pulled through of Marvin, he came back to the motel and searched of Hank to
get some information about Beth’s existence. He feels about Hank knew about
something. The motel was scene of action where big conflict developed between
Cameron and hank. As shown in the quotation below:
Cameron: “Wake up! Up”.
Hank
: “How did you? Ah! Son of a bitch! You broke my fucking
nose!”
Cameron: “Where‟s Beth?”
Hank
: “I told you before. I don‟t know”.
Cameron: “I‟m not gonna ask you again”.
(Act III: 00:42:12)
Based the quotation above it clearly indicated that happened fight or physical
conflict between Hank and Cameron. Hank shocked of Cameron which burst upon. He
knew Cameron was brought Marvin by the police’s car. When he would to ask how
Cameron pulled through of Marvin, suddenly Cameron dropped into him. And then, he
broke Hank’s nose. It was caused by Hank who was missing Beth and did not
acknowledge about it when Cameron asks to know, hence Cameron broke him. The
expression explains that it was conflict Man vs. Man, namely conflict between Cameron
and Hank.
Though Cameron broke Hank’s nose, but it was not made Hank to his
acknowledge. Therefore, he curry skin coat of Hank. Finally, Cameron gave two choices
to Hank, there was a case of life and death. Hank did not the other choice exception
choosing to acknowledge and knowing to Cameron of all that happened. In fact, he had
related with the missing of Beth. His acknowledge shown in the quotation below:
Hank
: “The-the-the old abattoir on-on the outskirts of town. Just
drive west and you turn left at the old wagon wheel. I-I
swear. I swear, I swear to God. I swear.”
(Act III: 00:42:46)
The quotation explained that finally Hank knowing to Cameron of Beth existence.
It seems by Hank’s acknowledge of Cameron with his voice that chocking up that swear
to God. Based the Hanks’ expression, it can be concluded that conflict was happened
between Cameron and Hank. Cameron thrust on to Hank gave him information about
Beth. From Hank explanation, he was very fear to Cameron. It seems by the sentences of
Hank with his voice that chocking up when she swear to God. Therefore, the utterances
clarified the conflict Man vs. Man.
3. Conflict between Beth and Ivy
Conflict that happened between Beth and Ivy firstly was caused by the death of a
woman which they found in a bathroom. Before she died, she has the last message to
them. Her die was tragically, it was made Ivy would not has same fate like her. It was
made an issue between Beth and Ivy. As shown in the quotation below:
Ivy : “We have to leave right now. I-I don‟t know who or what did that
to her, but I do not wanna stick around to find out”.
Beth: “Did you hear what she said? “Take care of my baby.”
Ivy : “She also said, “If you survive.” Our children are gone. They‟re
not coming back.”
Beth: “I‟m not leaving without my baby. Not while there‟s still a chance
that she might be alive.”
(Act II: 00:32:43)
Based the quotation above, it clearly shown that the different opinion between
both speaker. Ivy would to leave the clinic. She did not care with what the happened in
the clinic. And then, she said that their children was gone and not coming back. But not
for Beth, she was not leaving without her baby. Based on the utterances, it can concluded
that the expression explained Man vs. Man. The next, those the different wishes between
Beth and Ivy. Therefore, it refers to conflict between Beth and Ivy.
Conflict between Beth and Ivy continue to rage when they decided to searched
their children. After they debated Ivy decided to followed Beth and the other woman to
found her children. In this finding was rising of conflict between Beth and Ivy. It was
caused by Alyson’s death. As it was being they made two groups to found their children.
There were Beth with Veronica and Ivy with Alyson. In the finding, suddenly Alyson
was died. Certainly, it was made Beth mad to Ivy because she knew Alyson gone
together with Ivy. The conflict between them as showed below:
Beth : “You were supposed to look after her, Ivy.”
Ivy : “She wandered off. What the fuck was I Supposed to do”
(Act II: 00:40:48)
Based the quotation above, it clearly that there is the different opinion between
Beth and Ivy. Beth fault to Ivy about the lying of Alyson. She said that Ivy was supposed
to look after Alyson. But, Ivy looks after herself. She was explained to Beth about Alyson
wandered off, thus what she was supposed Alyson. Based the utterances above, it means
that happened conflict Man vs. Man, namely conflict between Beth and Ivy. The struggle
occurred from the verbal conflict between them.
4. Conflict between Beth and Duncan
External conflict that happened between Beth and Duncan was become lucky to
Beth. It means that Beth was success get the keys to open the cage to the babies. He also
gets some information about The Clinic by report of Duncan. It occurred when Beth
found a house. The first conflict between Beth and Duncan as shown in the quotation
below:
Duncan: “You‟re in Duncan‟s house. Ladies aren‟t allowed in
Duncan‟s house. Ms. Shepard‟s going to be so mad.”
(Act IV: 00:59:28)
The quotation explained that Beth bound in Duncan’s house. But, Duncan
explained that ladies were not allowed in Duncan’s house because Ms. Shepard going to
be so mad to him. The illustration clearly clarified that those social differences that
occurred in character Duncan and Beth. Duncan would be Beth get out in his house.
Therefore, it was included that conflict Man vs. Man, there wass conflict between Beth
and Duncan.
The conflict between Beth and Duncan were continuous when Beth got the keys
of open the cage to the babies. Previously, she must run after of Duncan to get it. But, she
also gained some information about the clinic that could be helped to found her babies.
Conflict between Beth and Duncan as shown in quotation below:

: “Do the keys on your belt open the cage to the babies?”
Duncan: “Duncan not allowed to talk about it”
Beth
: “Why can‟t you talk about it? Duncan, wait!”
(Act IV: 01:01:21)
From the quotation above, Beth pushed Duncan to know her about something.
But, Duncan kept a thing a secret. He said that he did not allowed to talk about it. But,
Beth tried to get the information. She was run after Duncan when he broke parole.
Finally, she gained it. The expression indicates those conflict Man vs. Man, it wass
conflict between Beth and Duncan that caused by the different wishes between them.
5. Conflict between Ms. Shepard and Duncan
The conflict happened between mother and her son. Ms. Shepard was Duncan’s
mother. In this case, Duncan has illness of mental, namely idiot. He followed what the
people said, like as he did to her mother, Ms. Shepard. His main job was cleaning the
floor that dirty of blood. He also has specialized task, it was thrown away of human
corpse, like as his done to Ivy. But, in here conflict Duncan opposed of his mother.
Suddenly, he did not would to clean floor since he met with Beth. And even as Beth
hostage by Ms. Shepard, he helped Beth by carried a gun and shown teeth of the man was
to about to end Beth’s life. Duncan’s action made his mother so mad, as quoted below:
Ms. Shepard: “Put the gun down, Duncan!”
Duncan
: “Bang! No, Duncan, don‟t.”
(Act IV: 01:19:56)
Based the quotation above, it showed Duncan opposed his mother. Ms. Shepard
asks to Duncan to put the gun down, but Duncan did not do it. The utterances means that
happened conflict between Ms. Shepard and Duncan. And then, the struggle that occurred
in the characters was born from moral. It seems by Duncan’s attitudes that not follow the
asking of Ms. Shepard. Thus, it concludes that it is conflict Man vs. Man.
Conflict between Ms. Shepard and her son go on when Duncan did not followed
what her said. It made Ms. Shepard frightened because suddenly Duncan turned into
protester and more choosing to after look Beth. The action of Duncan which bob up was
really beyond belief of Ms.Shepard. She did not supposed that Duncan audaciously offer
resistance her. At the end, she talked wildly asked that Duncan to shoot of Beth. It seems
by on the quotation below:
Ms.Shepard: “Shoot her. Shoot her, you stupid retard. Do as you‟re
fucking told.”
(Act IV: 01:20:39)
The quotation above clearly shown there was struggles that born from verbal
conflict. Ms. Shepard said the hard words of her son. It caused by the different wishes
between Ms. Shepard and her son. Therefore, it made Ms. Shepard so mad of Duncan.
She asked of Duncan to shoot Beth. Based the illustration, it means that was conflict Man
vs. Man, namely conflict between Ms .Shepard and Duncan.
6. Conflict between Beth and Ms. Shepard.
These conflict between the main character with the other character, or conflict
between protagonist and antagonist, or may be conflict between a hero and villain. I said
that because in the movie Beth was the main character. She tried to found her child and
her friend’s children. It means that she was protagonist and a hero toward her friends.
While Ms.Shepard was antagonist because she was evil doer that asking Marvin and
Hank to abducted the woman was pregnant. She takes up the running in the clinic. She
helped the adopting parents of Beth to purchase a child, namely Beth. Thus, Beth was
born in the clinic by abortion as like they doing to her.
The first conflict between Beth and Ms. Shepard has been began when Beth knew
about Ms. Shepard was ringleader of the all incident which they through, implied in the
abortion and the missing of their children. When she successes slip of and got a gun, she
threaten Ms. Shepard to restrain from her. It seems on the quotation below:
Beth
: “Don‟t you come any closer”
Ms.Shepard: “You‟ve matured into a fine young woman, Beth. Your
parents must be very proud”
Beth
: “Stay back.”
(Act IV: 01:22:34)
The quotation above explained that Beth interdicts Ms. Shepard to come any
closer. But Ms. Shepard jogged along. Hence Beth threatens with a gun and asks her to
stay back. It was explained that there was conflict between Man vs. Man, namely conflict
between Ms. Shepard and Beth.
The next conflict between Beth and Ms. Shepard was caused by confession of Ms.
Shepard. It was about Beth was adopted child by her parents. Her biological mother was
killing by her adopting father. The confession of Ms. Shepard to Beth showed on the
quotation below:
Ms.Shepard: “I can still remember your biological mother, Lydia. She
tried so hard not to cry as Roger was about to end her
life. She was a strong woman much like yourself. But
she wasn‟t a killer.”
Beth
: “Well, evolution‟s a bitch.”
(Act IV: 01:23:53)
Based on the quotation above, the situation clearly clarified that Ms. Shepard
explained to Beth about her biological mother. She said about Lydia tried so hard did not
cry as roger was about to end Lydia’s life. Also, she said that Lydia was a strong woman
much like Beth, but Lydia was not a killer. The utterance explains that there is conflict
between Beth and Ms. Shepard. It seems by the expression of Ms. Shepard about Lydia
was not a killer. But Beth answered that it was evolution. It means that Beth wants to
killer her. Therefore, it includes in conflict Man vs. Man.
From the all explanations above, it can be concluded that Man vs. Man is the part
of external conflict that occurs between characters. In this story I found conflict Man vs.
Man happened in character Cameron and Marvin, Cameron and Hank, Beth and Ivy, Beth
and Duncan, Duncan and Ms. Shepard, and the last is Beth and Ms. Shepard.
Commonly, this conflict happened that caused by the different social, there are the
different opinion and wishes between characters. It is inciting the emotional of the
characters. Therefore, happened verbal and physical conflicts, namely dispute and fights
between some characters.
4.2.2 Man vs. Fate
Man vs. Fate occurred when a character was compelled to follow an unknown destiny.
Man versus fate conflict breeds internal conflict, while forcing a character to consciously, or
subconsciously, act on his or her fate. (Hammond, 2010)
I found the Conflict Man vs. Man in the movie contained in the main character, there was
Beth’s character only. The conflict occurs was caused by Beth compelled to accept a fact of her
life about her parents in fact was her adopting parents. When Ms. Shepard told about her secret
life, she tried to rejection by reason of Ms. Shepard was lying her. It clearly seems on the
quotation below:
Ms.Shepard: “Born 12th of May, 1950. Biological mother Lydia Hayes.
Adopting parents, Roger and Judy Church.
Beth
: “No. No, you‟re lying.”
(Act IV: 01:23:11)
Based on the quotation above, Ms. Shepard explained to Beth about her biological
mother was Lydia Hayes. And then, her parents she knows during now in fact was her adopting
parents. Beth not believes of Ms. Shepard. She said Ms. Shepard was lying to her. Based the
expression, it means there was conflict Man vs. fate, namely conflict between Beth and her fate.
It was occurred when Beth compelled to follow unknown destiny. The next, it seems by Beth’s
statement that think about Ms. Shepard was lying. She did not accept the fact of her fate about
her parents in fact was her adopting parents.
The surprising of Beth has not still when she heard the confession of Ms. Shepard about
how the next fate of her biological mother, Lydia. By Ms. Shepard’s own admission, her mother
was death by killing of her adopting father. Her biological mother tried so hard did not cry as her
adopting father was about to end her biological mother’s life. Ms. Shepard said that her adopting
father could not legally adopt children of his own because of his criminal record. It shown on the
quotation below:
Ms‟Shepard: “Roger couldn‟t legally adopt children of his own because of
his criminal record so he came to see me to purchase a
child. I can still remember the transaction. He paid cash.”
Beth
: “I don‟t believe you”
(Act IV: 01:23:21)
Based on the quotation above, Ms. Shepard explained to Beth about how she adopted by
her adopting parents. Ms. Shepard said that Roger couldn’t legally adopt children of his own
because of his criminal record. Therefore, he came to Ms. Shepard to purchase a child, namely
Beth. And then, she also said that still remember the transactions, there was about Roger paid
cash. Beth really could not accept the fact about her life. She protest again to Ms. Shepard with
said that she did not believe to Ms. Shepard. From the illustration above, it seems that Beth had
conflict with the fate. She compelled to accept her adopting father was a criminal. It concludes
that it is conflict Man vs. Fate.
4.2.3 Man vs. Nature
Man versus nature conflicts occur when a character, or characters, find themselves at
odds with forces of nature. A character struck by lightening, characters whose boat sinks in a
storm and a character who struggles against hypothermia in a snow storm are all characters
experiencing man versus nature conflicts. (Hammond, 2010)
The conflict occurred of characters by Beth, Veronica and Ivy. They has been around the
same conflict toward nature, in the case were dogs. The conflict occurred when they tried to find
out the laboratory to do the operation. On the way, they met of two dogs that struggle to found
out the carcass of mouse. Beth realized that they in danger. Therefore, she asked to her friends to
get find another way, as shown on the quotation below:
Beth : “We‟ve gotta find another way. Come on. Come on, get up!”
(Act II: 00:49:01)
Based on the quotation above, Beth explained to Veronica and Ivy to find another way.
The expression explains that when Beth, Veronica and Ivy runs because chased by two dogs.
They were found another way in order to slip off by the dogs. The utterance refers to conflict
Man vs. Nature because there was struggle toward nature, namely conflict between Beth and her
friends with the dogs.
The conflict that happened between the dogs and Beth, Veronica and Ivy was breeds the
other conflict, there is Veronica was accident. It caused by the dogs that after run them. Veronica
and Beth fallen in the hole. It makes the knee of Veronica is dislocated. It seems by on the
quotation below:
Veronica: “I can‟t put pressure on my leg. I think I‟ve dislocated my
knee.”
(Act IV: 00:53:24)
The quotation above clarified that Veronica explained to Beth about she could not put
pressure on her leg. She said that she had dislocated of her knee. The expression refers to it was
happened conflict Man vs. Man, there wass conflict between veronica and the accident that
happened it herself. It seems by Veronica’s statements about dislocated of her knee. The accident
caused by the dogs that run after them.
4.2.4 Man vs. Society
This external conflict exists when characters struggling against the morays of their
culture and government. Dystopian works, where character's battle evil, oppressive cultures are
characteristic of man versus society conflict. (Hammond, 2010)
Conflict Man vs. Society that I found in The Clinic movie contained in the main
characters. There are conflict between Cameron with the gang of criminal and conflict between
Beth with the gang of criminal.
1.
Conflict between Cameron and The Gang of Criminal
This conflict was the first conflict in The Clinic movie. The conjuncture of this conflict
was when the main character, namely Beth and Cameron traveled to Beth's parents' house to
celebrate Christmas with his family. At that time, Beth and Cameron were chatting and joking in
a sedan car driven by Cameron. The couple looked very happy. They will discuss their happiness
about the birth of their baby. On the way, suddenly they were followed by a mysterious truck. In
the middle of the conversation, Cameron briefly saw a truck left far behind them. However, over
time the truck was getting closer to their cars. Even Cameron estimates that truck speed was very
high. While Cameron was busy arguing about the truck behind them, Beth instead preoccupied
with writing a letter to his mother. She did not know if they are followed by a mysterious truck.
Beth knows when Cameron suddenly shouted for Beth to be careful when the truck crashed into
their car quickly from behind that resulted in their car seat slightly damaged. Fortunately,
Cameron quickly mastered the steering wheel. He managed to control his car and they survived.
Beth was really surprised for what happened. Cameron was very upset and angry, as in the
quoted below:
Cameron: “What a fucking maniac. If I hadn‟t swerved, they would have
clipped us.”
(Act I: 00:04:24)
Based on the quotation above, the expression explained that Cameron was so mad with
the truck mysterious that blunder their back car. It clearly seems by the utterances of Cameron
that used hard words. It means that there is conflict Man vs. Society. It seems that the truck
mysterious that blunder their car.
After experience of conflict with the truck mysterious, the conflict has been around by
Cameron continuously when he decided to rooming with Beth. But their decided to rooming at
the motel was the wrong decision. They just get a new problem, there is the missing of Beth. The
missing of Beth breeds many conflict. Cameron asks to Marvin to found out Beth. Cameron feels
that there are the people that abducted of Beth. He inculpated of Hank about the missing of Beth.
The accusation of Cameron to Hank shown on the quotation below:
Cameron: “He‟s been infatuated with Beth since the minute we arrived.”
Marvin : “Easy with the accusations, son.”
(Act I: 00:17:37)
Based on the quotation above, it was clearly seems that Marvin after look to Hank.
Cameron explained to Marvin about Hank in been infatuated with Beth since the minute they
arrived. But Marvin not believed with Cameron. He just said that easy with the Cameron’s
accusation. The expression indicates that there is conflict Man vs. Society, namely conflict
between Cameron with Marvin and Hank. It seems by Marvin’s statement that after look Hank.
In this case, character Cameron battle evil that doing of character Hank and Marvin.
When Cameron realized that Marvin and Cameron work together to something, he turned
the other cheek of Hank. It caused by Marvin and Hank not helped to found out Beth. Therefore,
it made Cameron so mad. Cameron feels that Hank knows about something. He tried to knowing
it toward Marvin, but Marvin always after look Hank. The situation shown in the quotation
below:
Cameron: “This is bullshit. He knows something.”
(Act I: 00:17:50)
The quotation above clearly shown the emotion of Cameron was rising. It was caused by
Marvin not serious to handle the case of Beth’s missing. Cameron explained to Marvin about
Hank knows about something. But, Marvin did not care about it. It refers to there is conflict
between Cameron, Hank and Marvin. Hank and Marvin work together in missing Beth. They do
evil to Cameron and Beth. It can be concluded that it was conflict Man vs. society.
The involvement of Hank and Marvin in the missing of Beth was proved too. It was
occurred after Cameron turned the other cheek of Hank, Marvin disable of Cameron. He disable
of Cameron in the back, hence Cameron did not knew about who was disable him. The
involvement of Hank and Marvin in missing of Beth shown on the quotation:
Hank :“Outstanding. Thank you, Marv. Checkout‟s at 11. Actually,
you‟d better make that 10 beings as it‟s Christmas Day and all.
Look after yourself, son. She‟s bound to turn up sooner or later”
(Act I: 00:18:14)
The quotation above explained that Hank gave thanks to Marvin because helped him to
disabled Cameron. And then, he said that to checkout was at 11. He also said about Beth bound
to turn up sooner or later. It means that he had involvement about missing of Beth. The
expression indicates that there was conflict Man vs. Society, there was conflict between Cameron
with Marvin and Hank. It seems that by Hank’s statement to Marvin and Cameron.
2. Conflict between Beth and The Gang of Criminal
Conflict that happened in Beth’s character was same with conflict that happened in
Cameron’s character. The both of them are conflict with the gang of criminal. The different were
in conflict that experienced by Cameron, that make gang of criminal are Marvin and Hank, while
in the conflict between Beth and the gang of criminal was between her, Duncan, Ms. Shepard
and the group people of Ms. Shepard.
The conflict occurred when suddenly Duncan came to helped Bath with carried a gun in
his hand. Duncan wants to shoot the man that will shoot Beth. Ms. Shepard tried asks Duncan to
stop his action. She said that it all just a game, as shown on the quotation below:
Ms.Shepard: “This is all just a game. We‟ve been through this”
Duncan
: “No, Duncan no more bleach the floor. No more bleach the
floor”
Ms.Shepard: “None of this real”
Beth
: “No, she‟s lying, Duncan. She‟s lying. They‟re hurting me. I
need you to unlock these”
(Act IV: 01:20:07)
Based on the quotation above, it clearly seems that Ms. Shepard tried to influence
Duncan in order to shoot Beth. She said that none of this real, this is all just a game. But Duncan
did not it. The next, Beth explained to Duncan about Ms. Shepard was lying. They are hurting
her and she need Duncan to unlock handcuffs. The expression explains that there are the big
conflict between Ms. Shepard, Beth and Duncan. It seems by Beth begged to Duncan to help her
because they were hurting her. It means that the utterances included conflict Man vs. Society
because character Beth battle evil that doing by Ms. Shepard.
