Experimenting with color
M
ilt Kobayashi loves to paint
women because he feels like
their personalities are more
accessible than those of men. In his newest
exhibition at the Total Arts Gallery in Taos,
he continues this female-focused theme and
finds his work becoming more and more
design-oriented as his career progresses.
“I’m taking a lot of liberties with
how I present the subject matter,” says
Kobayashi. “My brushwork has changed
a little bit, more of an evolution than
a change though. But, I’m finding that
I’m being much more liberal with color.
I went through stages of doing very muted
paintings and then when I would use
a high-key palette and that lasted for
a few years. Now I’m back to a more muted
palette, how I used to paint.”
Kobayashi finds that one of the best
ways for him to experiment with new
work, new techniques and new approaches
to color is through the workshops he
teaches. He recently finished a workshop
at the Scottsdale Artists’ School and was
very happy with what developed from
those sessions.
“It’s my opportunity to experiment,”
says Kobayashi. “And I take that back to
my easel in New York City because I will
do things at a seminar that I would never
think of doing while working in my studio.
Demonstrations give me a chance to break
out and how I break out is through color.
Ideas also flow in an interesting way because
you have to think on the spot, so everything
is very quick and the result is that I do things
that actually surprise me sometimes.”
Harold Geller, director of Total Arts
Gallery, has been representing Kobayashi
since the beginning of his career and has
now been showing his work for 14 years.
Geller sees Kobayashi’s proclivity toward
painting ordinary people caught in the

The Gallery Says . . .
“Kobayashi’s paintings have been closely
associated with those of the French
Impressionist Edgar Degas in content and
design. Minimal brushstroke enhances his
design while his palette creates mood and
expression. Evolving from history, models
and life’s experiences, Kobayashi provides the
viewer with the opportunity to engage in a
unique dialogue.”

regular activities and settings of their everyday
lives as coming from the influence of 16th and
17th century Japanese wood block prints.
“Known as Ukiyo-e, or ‘pictures of the
floating world,’ subjects are depicted in the
constantly changing motions and moods
of daily routine activities,” says Geller.
“Interestingly, Kobayashi, who is himself
of Japanese descent, discovered this art of
the Edo period via his study of such major
Western influences as Velazquez, Chase,
Whistler and Sargent.”
