Fall Creek Valley Summer Reading and Writing
Project
Every student at Fall Creek Valley is required to have a composition
notebook on the first day of school for their English/Language Arts class.
Please complete this Summer Reading & Writing project in your composition
notebook.
For each entry you MUST write a MINIMUM of TWO paragraphs in response to
the prompt. To keep pace with this project, it is suggested that students
complete ONE entry each week. (A suggestion is to assign a Friday due date
to each entry – ex. 6/6, 6/13, 6/20, 6/27, 7/4, 7/11, 7/18, and 7/25.) All 8 entries
will be due on Friday, August 8th.
Writing Portion:
You must answer ALL FOUR of the following writing prompts:
#1 Narrative:
Write about a lesson you have learned from a family member (father, mother, guardians,
grandparent(s), aunt, uncle, etc. – pick a relative).

Remember that not all lessons are positive, and some are learned by example not
instruction. Write 2 paragraphs about your lesson.
#2 Persuasive:
Should there be a summer reading project? Why or why not?

We want to hear your thoughts on this actual project and your entry will not be graded on
your opinion. Make a claim – Yes or No and give at least two reasons to support your
position.
#3 Informational:
What makes a good teacher?

Write 2 paragraphs that will inform adults/teachers/students what makes a good teacher
and why.
#4 Student’s Choice: Choose your last entry from the following:

What is your favorite time of year? Describe what makes that season so special.
Describe what makes your favorite food so spectacular.
What if you could become invisible? Express what would happen.
Describe the most terrifying moment of your life thus far.

Response to Reading:



After reading a book from the FCV summer book list, please choose
FOUR prompts from the list below and respond in your composition
notebook.
You MUST INCLUDE: TITLE and AUTHOR of the book you choose to
read.
Each entry must be a MINIMUM of TWO PARAGRAPHS demonstrating
your insight and knowledge of the book you read.
Prompt Choices:
1. Write a summary of the main events in the book you read. Be sure to include the
title and author of the book.
2. Give one character in your book a piece of advice. What would your advice be
and why would you give him/her this advice?
3. Describe and explain why you would/would not like to have lived in the time and
place of the book.
4. Explain two personal connections you made to the book.
5. Explain what events in the book surprised, saddened, excited, or upset you.
6. Write an alternate ending to your book.
7. Write a letter to the author explaining why you would or would not read another
book by him/her. Include at least two reasons why you feel this way
8. Compare yourself to a character/person in your book. How are you the
same/different?
9. Compare your personal environment to the setting in your book. How are they the
same/different?
10. Persuade a classmate to read your book. Include information about the setting,
characters, the action in the plot, and your opinion of the resolution (end).
