Thanksgiving:
Did you know?
*The first Thanksgiving was only eaten with spoons and
knives. The reason for the fork being absent was because it
was not brought by the pilgrims in 1620. It was introduced ten
years later by Governor Winthrop of Massachusetts, but it was
not brought into popular use until the 18th century.
* Benjamin Franklin wanted the Turkey to be the national bird of the United States. He considered
the Bald Eagle to be a bird of bad moral character.
* Thanksgiving brought about the creation of T.V. Dinners: Part of the reason that
Swanson started creating T.V. Dinners in 1953 was because they needed to find something to do
with 260 tons of frozen turkeys that were left over from Thanksgiving. Talk about a lot of Turkey
dinners!
*Americans eat the weight of Singapore in Turkey every Thanksgiving : According to
a study done by the National Turkey Association, Americans ate 690 million pounds of turkey
during Thanksgiving 2007. That is equal to the weight of the entire population of Singapore. If that
isn’t enough to make you feel stuffed, then nothing will!

Fire Hazards: Holiday Safety In Your Home
Keep your tree watered!
Each year, dry Christmas trees are the cause of
approximately 200 fires, 6 deaths, 25 injuries, and
over $6 million in property damage. Electrical shorts in
strung Christmas lights or open flames have no
problem setting dry trees on fire. To prevent this,
make sure to always keep the tree stand filled with
water. Keep in mind that although most artificial trees
are sold as “flame retardant,” they can still catch fire.
When an artificial tree burns, it will melt and produce
toxic smoke. As with real trees, open flames should be
kept away artificial trees. Remember, no open flames
(candles) are allowed in your apartment, per your
lease.
CHRISTMAS TREE DISPOSAL: Please do not
dispose of your Christmas trees in the dumpster. If
we find you have put your tree in the dumpster, you
will be charged $50. You may take it to the Post
Falls transfer station for NO CHARGE. Located at
15580 W. Prairie Ave. Thank you. Management.
Cooking fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries in the United States. The
National Fire Protection Association (NFPA®) reports that three in ten home fires start in the kitchen,
more than any other room in the house.
Considered to be one of the more preventable types of fires, kitchen fires can be avoided by following a
few common sense guidelines:
 An adult should always be present when a child is preparing any food.
 Designate a three-foot area in front of the stove where children are not allowed.
 Cut out strips of paper and tape them to the floor to help your child visualize the
safety area.
 Turn all pot and pan handles inward to keep them out of reach from small children.
 Keep flammable objects (kitchen towels, cookbooks and curtains) at least three feet from the
stove top.
 Keep a fire extinguisher handy but do not mount behind the stove. You don’t want to have to
reach through a fire to get it.
 Keep an eye on food that is cooking. This includes microwaves where an incorrect amount of
cooking time can lead to sparks or fire. (Think of a bag of popcorn that’s cooked too long.)
 Douse cigarette or cigar butts with water before dumping in trash.
 Clean cooking surfaces regularly to prevent grease buildup. Built up waste can later ignite.
 Wear appropriate clothing while cooking. Clothing should be formfitting to avoid cloth coming in
contact with a flame or burner. Also, tie back any loose hair.
 Do not store food in the oven. It is easy to forget that there is an item in the oven
when preheating.
 Unplug small appliances when not in use.
 Every kitchen should have at least one working fire extinguisher or fire suppressant within easy
reach.
 Never use a kitchen range to heat your home.

PUMPKIN DISPOSAL
Please dispose of your
pumpkins before they
turn into a slimy pile of
goo. When your pumpkin
starts to look like this,
it’s
time
for
the
dumpster!
Introduction:
Hello! I am Sarah Andrews. I joined the
NuVu Property staff in August. I may
have had the pleasure of speaking with
you, but I may have missed others. Let
me know how I can help you!
CLEAN YOUR
MICROWAVE THE
EASY WAY!
In
a
microwave
safe
container, (I use a large
Tupperware bowl), fill most
of the way with water. Set
microwave on high power
for 10 minutes and start. Let
it sit for 15-20 minutes then
go back with a cleaning
sponge or wash rag and
easily wipe clean. No
scrubbing! All the stuck on,
crusty mess is soft and easy
to wipe off.
Please keep your
heater vents
clear. Dressers,
trees, clothing, or
furniture all need to
be at least 3’ away
from vents.

1 8oz. package egg noodles
2 tbsp butter
1 ½ cups sliced mushrooms (or use
canned sliced)
1 tsp salt
1/8 tsp pepper
2 cups chopped cooked turkey
1 can cream of celery soup
(condensed)
1 cup sour cream
½ cup grated parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Boil
noodles until al dente, drain. Melt
butter in skillet, sauté mushrooms
for 1 min. Season with salt and
pepper, then add turkey, soup, and
sour cream. Place cooked noodles in
9x13 baking dish. Pour sauce
mixture over top. Sprinkle with
parmesan cheese. Bake for 20-15
mins, or until sauce is bubbling.
1 (8 ounce) cream cheese, room
temperature
1 cup canned pumpkin pie mix,
(don't use plain 100% canned
pumpkin)
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 cups Cool Whip, (plus 1 cup Cool
Whip, more for topping)
1 (9 inch) graham cracker pie crust
Mix cream cheese, pumpkin pie
mix, sugar, 2 cups cool whip until
well blended and smooth. Spread
into pie crust. Chill and enjoy!
4 cups leftover prepared stuffing
4 cups leftover turkey
¾ cup mayonnaise
¼ cup whole berry cranberry
sauce
2 cups leftover mashed potatoes
1 ½ cups shredded mozzarella
cheese
Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
Spray 8-inch (20 cm) baking dish
with non-stick cooking spray.
Spoon in 2 cups stuffing, then top
with turkey.
Combine 1/4 cup Mayo with
cranberry sauce; evenly spread
over turkey.
Combine remaining 1/2 cup
Mayo, potatoes and cheese in
large bowl. Evenly spread on
turkey. Top with remaining 2
cups stuffing.
Bake 40 minutes or until heated
through. Let stand 10 minutes
before serving. Garnish, if
desired, with dried cranberries.
Cowboy Cookie Mix
1 1/3 cups quick oats
1/2 cup firmly packed brown
sugar
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup chopped pecans
1 cup chocolate chips
1 1/3 cups flour mixed with 1 tsp
baking powder, 1 tsp baking
soda and 1/4 tsp salt.
1 bag frozen hashbrowns (I
choose O’brien for the peppers
and onions)
1 bag grated cheese or 4-5 cups
cheddar or Colby (pepper jack
works great, too)
1 bunch chopped green onions
9 eggs
½ cup milk
Cut smoked sausage or prebrowned breakfast sausage (+any
other veggies you would like)
Coat crock pot with Pam (you
don’t have to, but those eggs can
stick!)
Layer ½ bag of hashbrowns on
bottom, then ½ the onions, ½ your
meat and ½ the cheese (or other
ingredients you chose).
Pour remaining hashbrowns as a
layer and layer the rest of your
ingredients. Top with a good
layer of cheese (Let’s face it, you
can never have too much cheese!)
Mix eggs and milk then
pour over top.
Cook 4 hours on high or 8 hours
on low (great overnight for no
cooking in the morning when you
have guests!). If it seems a little
watery, cook the last hour on high
with the lid off. The moisture will
cook off.
Layer ingredients in order given
in a 1 quart wide mouth canning
jar. Press each layer firmly in
place before adding next
ingredient.
Attach to Jar – (baking directions)
Cowboy Cookies:
Empty jar of cookie mix into a large
mixing bowl, blend mix together,
then add:
1 stick butter melted
1 egg slightly beaten
1 tsp vanilla
Mix until completely blended, and
shape into balls the size of walnuts.
Place 2 inches apart on baking
sheets. Bake at 350 degrees for 11
to 13 minutes until edges are lightly
browned. Cool 5 minutes, then
remove cookies to racks to finish
cooling. Makes 3 dozen cookies.
Family Holiday Activity:
TO MAKE!
Christmas Ice
Globes for your
lawn and porch!
Drop in a generous
amount of food
coloring into deflated
balloon. Fill with water
and freeze. Peel off the
balloon from the
outside after frozen
and set these colorful
winter gems along your
walkway during
Christmastime! Looks
amazing in the snow!
For a truly lovely twist on family holiday
tradition, you can take a cue from the Waterman family of St. Charles, Missouri.
Inspired by Eve Bunting's book “Night Tree”, the Waterman’s get together each
year with friends and family and trek into the woods to decorate a tree for the
animals. The evening begins at home, with the preparation of appropriate goodies:
pinecones rolled in peanut butter and birdseed, popcorn and cranberry garlands,
orange and apple slices. They decorate a special tree for their woodland friends
and head home for some hot cocoa together.
BRAIN DRAIN – THE BOARDLESS, PIECELESS, TIMELESS
GAME FOR ANYWHERE!
Pick a subject. Movies, characters, song names, food, restaurants etc… Anything with
a good variety. One person starts with a name of something or someone in the
category that starts with “A”. The next person in line has to come up with a new name
STARTING with the last letter of the name the last person said. Example: (food)
Apple…. Next person chooses Egg… the next person would have to choose a name
starting with “G” and so on. You earn a point if you have to pass or use the same
name. The one with the most points when it’s all over loses. You can choose to go as
many rounds as you want, or just play the game without points just for fun. This is
usually how we play it. This game you can make age appropriate very easily and
come up with ALL kinds of categories. Great time waster!!
