November 2016 = Tishrei-Cheshvan 5777 = Volume 78/ Number 2 = established 1867 = the-temple.org The Temple What Next B BY RABBI LOREN FILSON L APIDUS ecause of the nature of printing deadlines, I’m writing this article the day after Rosh Hashanah as well as the day after the vice presidential debate (and recovering from both). By the time this article is being read, we will have finished all of the chagim (holidays) from Rosh Hashanah through Simchat Torah, and we will be approaching the end of the 2016 election season. I am asking myself one question: What next? We conclude the High Holy Day season, empowered with the promise of God’s forgiveness and inspired by the feeling of a fresh start. Then, we re-enter the regular year. Swept into the rhythms of work, school, life, the new start can be quickly forgotten. The commitments we made to ourselves for 5777 are harder to keep in the forefront of our minds. So what next? I hope that all who came to The Temple during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, will use this as the first of many opportunities to be connected to our Temple family this year. Come to a Shabbat service—they’re more relaxed than the Holy Days!—or try out a TAMID: Adult Education class. Join a Temple Connect group and meet others with similar interests, or attend an Age and Stage event to meet others of similar ages. Pursue justice in our community through any number of initiatives around education, racial justice, homelessness, LGBTQ rights, and more. Please consider using the High Holy Days as just one point of connection, not the only point of connection, to The Temple. As our “Vision and Values” reminds us, we need each other as we try to make meaning in our world. I would offer that we will need each other even more come November 9th. Whatever the outcome of this 2016 election, we will need healing. The rhetoric has been strong, the divisions deep, and a significant portion of our country will be disappointed and anxious after the election is completed. So, what next? We have the opportunity to use our Jewish traditions and our community as a place of comfort and healing. Our pursuit of justice is commanded by Torah, not political parties. Our concern for others is born out of the wisdom of our tradition, not social media. Our belief in our role in being partners with God in making this world better than we found it is rooted in our faith, not something easily swayed by the outcomes of an election. Here at The Temple we are looking at our world and our roles in it, guided by Judaism and its teachings. We believe that each person is made in the image of God, worthy of our respect and our concern, and act on that belief. With that in our minds, we can use our Temple family as a place to make meaning and come together after months of an election cycle that sought to divide us. I urge us all to have compassion for one another, understanding that not everyone believes the same things about our country or votes for the same people, and to focus our attention on the prophetic call of Judaism, the values that transcend this moment and offer us comfort and guidance. So what next? Perhaps something even better. Moments of transition are special, but the days following them are full of potential for growth, healing, discovery, and connections. Together, as a community, we can help each other to find meaning in our days and put our beliefs into action. rabbi lapidus can be reached at: [email protected] WORSHIP SCHEDULE Friday, November 4 Shabbat Worship Service.................... 6:00 PM Meditation – Room 34........................ 7:00 PM The Well................................................. 8:00 PM Saturday, November 5 Torah Study...........................................9:00 AM Bar Mitzvah of Aaron J.
