Coordinator Fallon Worme would like to let the community members know, that the website she has been working on for Mary Jane Naveau Memorial School is up and running for the public to view but keep in mind that there is still a few minor details that she will be fixing/working on in the mean time. www.mjnms.firstnationschools.ca Lands & Resources Department Anhni, The Lands and resources Department has seen a very busy year, within the last year, Mattagami has signed several Exploration Agreements, of note, the two most important issues right now is the ratification of two Impact Benefit Agreements Lakeshore Gold- Bell Creek Site IBA two years to negotiate Agreement GOLD CORP IBA – 5 years to negotiate Agreement Mattagami held a meeting with Shawn Batise presenting the agreements on February 19 2014, the agreements did not get signed that night and still need to be ratified by Mattagami Members. On the forest side of things, I represent Mattagami on Three Forest Management Plans (FMP’s) in circulation by the Ministry of Natural Re- sources are the Annual Work Schedules of work that will be Happening on our Land base, the maps can be viewed at the band office, if you have any concerns, drop in at the office and let me know and I will bring your concerns to the MNR for discussion. Last thing of mention, I have attended meetings in Timmins in regards to Herbicides, an initiative by First Nations, Tembec, the Muskegowuk Council (HAP) Herbicides Alternatives Program, to eliminate the use of Herbicides in the forest, so far Tembec is the only company that is willing to do this, this project looks very promising, hopefully other Forest Companies will follow Tembec’s example. James Naveau Mary Jane Naveau Memorial School Mary Jane Naveau Memorial School will be having a fundraiser bottle drive. We will graciously be accepting any refundable bottles, starting Tuesday April 15, 2014. You can bring your empty's to the school shed, Ms. Echum's shed or Ms. Meghan's shed. Please call Mrs. G or Ms. Meghan at the school for a drop off location. Thanking you in advance for your donation. 4 Employment & Training Co-ordinator: Since 1993, Gary Naveau, Economic Development Officer has been handling the duties of “Employment & Training Co-ordinator. He’s got a lot of success stories and of course some failures. When he started, the area used to have the Mamo-wichi-hetwin Board, this was a Regional Project in which Tribal Council took on. Then in 2005 that funding agency was taken over by the Matawa Tribal council, and this is where Wabun Training & Employment Strategy was created. The employment and training budget was reduced to approximately $100,000/year. Our Chief and Council have been the decision makers on our submissions, which are based on, budget, employment trends, needs of the applicant, suitability for the training, education and desire. An example of some of the projects that we’ve approved in the past year: 2 Heavy Equipment Operators 2Az Licencing 1 Graphic Art Student 1 Mechanic Trainee 1 Community Event Assistant 1 Healthy Babies/Healthy Community Assistant Worker. This coming year our budget will be around the same figure that was presented earlier. Thanks to our Chief & council, and the participants, we’re about the only First Nation in our Tribal Council that uses the entire budget that we’ve been allocated. It’s a small budget and we try to spread it out as fairly as possible. This year we’re going to be receiving a “Mini Policy” booklet, that will give you a “snapshot” of the programs that are available and how to access them. Team Mattagami Relay For Life June 6th & 7th, 2014 Hello! We’re a group who represent Mattagami and we participate at the Canadian Cancer Society Relay for Life in Timmins. This will be our 3rd year participating at the Relay & our goal is to raise Cancer Awareness in our community. Relay for Life is a positive experience & encourages team members to become physically active which we hope will inspire more and so on. Last year each team member walked an average of 15 laps (6 km) & our goal this year is 25 laps (10 km) throughout a 12 hour night. We help raise funds for a good cause & although the money does not go directly towards our community, we believe that it benefits by raising cancer awareness. For more information on where the funds go, you can go to http:// www.cancer.ca/en/get-involved/ support-us/how-your-donation-help/? region=on. We raised $2,767.50 for the Canadian Cancer Society last year & our 2014 goal is $3,000. We also fundraise to help out with our team expenses since we live out of town. We welcome anyone to come join our team, either as a walker, volunteer or simply just would like to join us on relay night. For more info please feel free to contact me at 705-894-2072. Miigwetch!
