Bird Walk: Introduction to Ornithology

Registration in George Washington Hall
Coffee, juice, and a light breakfast will be
served all morning.
Your grandchild is welcome to join you at one
or two of the following demonstration classes.
Space is limited. Be sure to reserve your
spot during registration.
9:15–10 a.m. and 10:15–11 a.m.

Francophone Culture in North America
Instructor: Eugene Hughes, Instructor in French
Location: Samuel Phillips Hall, Room 216
April 2016 saw the first-ever publication of
writings in French by Jack Kérouac, including
several short stories and a version of On the
Road. This class will explore ideas of culture,
identity, and linguistic expression, giving special
attention to the long and rich history of local
francophone communities, including Kérouac’s
hometown of Lowell, Mass.
Human Origins
Instructor: Ryan Wheeler, Director,
Robert S. Peabody Museum of Archaeology
Location: Peabody Museum of Archaeology
This interactive lab offers the opportunity to
explore 14 skull casts from apes and hominids
spanning the famous 3.2-million-year-old
“Lucy” to modern humans. Learn about the
evolution of the human body and brain, sexual
dimorphism, and unique features of each skull.
Mindfulness at Andover
Instructor: Andy Housiaux, Instructor and
Chair, Philosophy and Religious Studies

In recent years, the concept of mindfulness has
become more mainstream and has been introduced in hospital settings, therapeutic contexts,
and, increasingly, schools. This program will
provide an overview and practice of mindfulness meditation and talk about various ways it is
becoming a part of the fabric of PA culture.

Please join us on a bird walk through PA’s
diverse campus environment, which will include
a visit to Rabbit Pond and Andover’s bird blind.
In case of rain, we will view the Greene-Smith

own binoculars if you have them.
Reading Poetry Through the Image

What is the subject of Walt Whitman’s “When I
Heard the Learn’d Astronomer?” By focusing on
images in the poem, we can better understand
how this short and popular work is a call for a
new American poetry.

Experiments Students Really Like

Enjoy making “stuff ” in the chemistry lab: the
color changes, the “pop” of an explosive reaction,
the flame of hydrogen gas burning, and the
“stink” of a decomposition reaction.
