Principal’s Corner Dear Parents/Guardians: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” - Nelson Mandela With everything happening in the world today, it is so important for us as a school and parish community to foster and encourage respect, inclusion and acceptance into our everyday lives. It is our duty as Catholics and disciples of Christ to model for our children how we want the world’s people to treat one another. In support of these ideals, I would like to invite you all to “You are my Neighbor,” an interfaith event welcoming our Muslim, refugee and immigrant neighbors on Thursday, March 2 from 6:30-8:30 pm in St. Barnabas Church. For more details on the event, please see the flyer in this newsletter. I also wanted to invite you to our family mass this Sunday at 10:00 am. At St. Barnabas, we are so fortunate to have an inclusive and involved community where our children can grow up knowing they have a network of supportive people surrounding them. Mass, and in particular, family mass, is a great opportunity to share in our community with your children, to worship, and to celebrate and be thankful for all the good in our lives. Have a great weekend, we hope to see you on Sunday! Mrs. Elaine Gaffney The leadership and volunteer team for our Imagine. Innovate. Inspire. campaign is delighted to share some exciting news this weekend at each of our masses. As we prepare to resume activity on behalf of this very special effort, we invite the entire family of St. Barnabas to give thanks for blessings received. We also ask for daily prayers that this next phase of our campaign will be met with open hearts, generous spirits and the understanding that, working together with God as our guide, we can accomplish great things! “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” ~ Philippians 4:13 Lost & Found Item Found at Choir Practice on Wednesday: Child’s Violin. If yours, please speak with Mrs. Duffy in the office. Thank you! Jr Basketball Registration Due Tomorrow! Tomorrow is the deadline for Jr. Basketball Registration for boys and girls in K-3rd Grade. Faculty Profile By now, most of you probably know Mrs. Beverly Reynders, who currently teaches kindergarten and has been teaching at St. Barnabas for 16 years. What you might not know, though, is that teaching is actually her second career! be able to put the crown on Mary, and she also got to have a court made up of some of her friends. Although she wanted to be a teacher since she was a little girl playing school with her friends, Mrs. Reynders was steered away from the profession during college, as she was told the teaching field was flooded. Instead, she earned a Business degree from Governor’s State University and worked for a law firm and then in Human Resources and Benefits for an apparel company for many years. She never forgot her passion for teaching though, and eventually went back to school and obtained her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education from St. Xavier University. Since that time, she has also been a member of Kappa Delta Pi, an International Honor Society in Education. She loves working at St. Barnabas because of the wonderful teachers and administration, the great students and the supportive parents. She particularly enjoys working with Mrs. Gail Butcher, who has been her Mrs. Beverly Reynders teacher aide for several years. One annual activity she always looks forward to is raising butterflies every spring with her kindergarteners. When she began her teaching career at St. Barnabas 16 years ago, she taught 2nd grade and loved it. She especially enjoyed helping the children prepare for the Sacraments. After five years, St. Barnabas was in need of a kindergarten teacher, and Mrs. Reynders was excited to try a new challenge, especially because she was always fascinated to see how children learned to read, and to be part of helping them with that life-transforming milestone. She says she was amazed during her first year teaching kindergarten that most children learn to read during that year, which is still a very rewarding part of her job. When she’s not at school, Mrs. Reynders enjoys gardening, going to the theater, watching any musical movie, taking day and weekend trips, and spending time with her wonderful husband and family. When she first started at St. Barnabas, she and her husband lived in West Beverly, but for the past 10 years, they have lived in Manhattan, and they love it there. Thank you for all you do for St. Barnabas, Mrs. Reynders, our kindergarteners are lucky to have you! Now that she’s teaching kindergarten, Mrs. Reynders says it’s her favorite age to teach, and she’s so glad she made the switch 11 years ago! Mrs. Reynders is originally from the South suburbs, and attended a Catholic grammar school. She still vividly remembers her own kindergarten teacher, and how magical and fun she made the kindergarten experience for her! Reading was always her favorite subject, and one of her all-time favorite books is The Giving Tree. One of her other favorite memories from grammar school was in 8th grade when she was selected to be the May Queen during May Crowning. She was very honored to Grant Aid Applications Due 4/30! Grant in Aid applications for the 2017-2018 school year are now available on the school website and parish website. Completed forms and required documents must be submitted to the school office by April 30, 2017. Family Profiles John and Mariellyn (Mel) LaGiglia have lived in St. Barnabas Parish for four years with their children Grace (6th grade), Mick (3rd), Brooke (1st), Danny (Bitty Buckeye), 2 and Brody (future Buckeye), 7 mos. This is the children’s second year attending St. Barnabas School. The LaGiglias chose St. Barnabas School because they were impressed by the curriculum and knew their children would be challenged to their full potential. They love the sense of community at St. Barnabas, and their kids like the friendships they have made here. Already, the LaGiglias have gotten involved with several school activities. Mel has volunteered to decorate for school dances, communion banners and birthday activities. John has attended Men’s Club events and birthday activities, and they both have enjoyed Bottles, Bites & Brews, Comedy Night and Trivia Night. Grace played basketball last year and Brooke played spring soccer. Outside of St. Barnabas, Grace is a champion-level Irish Dancer at Tooromeen School of Irish Dance, and Brooke hopes to one day join her ranks. The girls and their brother, Mick, also love softball/baseball and play for Ridge Beverly. Mick also wrestles with Marist Wrestling Club. In their free time as a family, they enjoy cheering each other on at sporting events and dance competitions. They also love going to their family cottage in Michigan where there is always something fun to do, like water skiing, swimming or hiking in the woods. The family’s favorite local restaurant is Horse Thief Hollow, and they’re a house divided when it comes to Chicago baseball! Over Christmas break, they went to Winter Wonder Fest at Navy Pier and spent time in Michigan. Joe and Kerry Esselman and their children Jack (7th grade), Patrick (5th), Kelley (3rd) and Megan (PreSchool), have been part of St. Barnabas Parish since they were first married 17 years ago, and St. Barnabas School since Jack started kindergarten in 2009. They chose St. Barnabas because they wanted to stay in their home parish for school, and because they liked Project Match. They knew their kids all learned differently and liked the idea that this program allowed them to be met where they were. They also like the school’s focus on ICEPs, which makes a big difference in how well their children can learn. They have since moved three times but have always stayed in St. Barnabas Parish. Kerry and Joe like the sense of community they feel at St. Barnabas, and that there is always something to get involved in and a way to get to know other families in and out of the classrooms. The Esselman kids like the people they have met. Their friends, teachers and other families have all been kind and supportive. They also love all the activities St. Barnabas offers. Kerry and Joe have been involved with many aspects of St. Barnabas. Joe is one of the Men’s Club presidents. He helps with the Progressive Dinner, the Golf outing, and other events. He has coached soccer, basketball and football. Kerry has been FSA secretary for the past two years, and has run our wonderful After School Enrichment (ASE) Program for the past six years. She is a member of the Christ Renews His Parish (CRHP) team, and has worked as a substitute teacher and currently as a 1st-grade classroom aide. At school, Jack and Patrick play football, basketball and volleyball, and Patrick is also on crew for the play. Kelley plays Jr. Basketball and has taken many Art ASE classes. Megan is in ASE Circus Math, which the older three kids help run. Every week, the family has Sunday dinner with Kerry’s parents, which is a favorite family tradition. They also go to Indianapolis whenever they can to spend time with Joe’s side of the family. Their one phrase to describe St. Barnabas? “People who care.” Thank you to both families for your participation in our Family Profiles! Retreats for 6th, 7th & 8th-Graders BACKGROUND ON OUR JR HIGH RETREAT PROGRAM: Three years ago, St. Barnabas School offered the 8th-graders a closing retreat; a time meant to reflect on their time at St. Barnabas. As the 8th-graders prepared for graduation, they were overwhelmed by the tasks and feelings associated with leaving behind the familiar for the unknown. The retreat was facilitated by our parish High School Youth Ministry. High school students active in our parish offered both relatable experiences and perspectives. The experience invited our 8th-graders to take all they have come to know about themselves and their faith and bring this into the future that awaits them. Our students were so impacted that many not only returned to lead the retreat for the next St. Barnabas 8th grade class, but they remained more active in the life of our parish beyond our school based on this experience. From this success we saw an opportunity to serve our students. Retreat experiences are an important part of faith development and an excellent tool for team-building among classmates and their teachers. Maryellen Harrington, who has served St. Barnabas Parish for the past eight years in Youth Ministry and Adult Formation, began serving St. Barnabas School as Director of Service Learning and Retreats in the 2016-2017 school year. This spring, we are excited to be able to expand our retreat offerings to include our 6th and 7th grades. PARENTS: WE NEED YOUR HELP! On Monday, March 6th, St. Barnabas School will be providing an opportunity for our 7th-graders to spend a day getting to know themselves and their peers better. This day-long retreat will invite the students to visit and share about themselves, and grow in relationship with one another as the class of 2018. To provide this experience, we need 10 adults willing to join us. We want to invite adults of the parish and parents of our school students to help facilitate this experience for our students. It can't happen without you! Please consider being a part of the adult team that will help bring this enlightening experience to our students. Your main role will be to serve as a Christian mentor for the day. As a mentor, you will help facilitate conversation and complete small tasks within a small group of students. For example, a small task might be to complete a small group team poster. As a Christian mentor you would help the students to converse with one another, examine what they believe and how they feel about the world around them, and share about their own interests, skills, and talents. Are you willing to join the St. Barnabas Class of 2018, the current 7th graders, for their first annual class retreat on Monday, March 6th from 8 am-3 pm? If so, please click here. Newsletter Submission Deadline: Please have your final newsletter submissions to Mrs. Sebby at ksebby@stbarnabasparish. org by Wednesday morning at 9 am for that Thursday’s newsletter. We cannot guarantee that submissions received after that time will make it into the newsletter that week. This deadline allows us time to send our school families a newsletter that is as accurate as possible by Thursday afternoon. Thank you for your cooperation! 7th Grade Spotlight In 7th grade science (below right), students explained how cancer relates to mutations and the cell cycle. They learned what cancer is, how it metastasizes, and several treatments for cancer. To reinforce what they learned, the students modeled a cell and showed how cells divide uncontrollably. They then made predictions about what type of cancers are more dangerous. As part of our One Book, One School unit on Fish in a Tree, our sixth and seventh grade ELA students studied the science behind having a growth mindset (below left). Students created journal entries, brought in items to represent a “fixed mindset” and a “growth mindset,” and created growth mindset posters. - Ms. Kotarski, Mrs. Kerr, Mrs. Preabt and Ms. Ruth This Week Manna Orders going Home Friday/O’Hara & Friends Joins Manna! Daniel Hale Williams (January 18, 1856 – August 4, 1931) was an African-American general surgeon, who in 1893 performed the second documented successful pericardium surgery to repair a wound. He also founded Provident Hospital--the first non-segregated hospital in the United States--in Chicago. In 1880, he entered Chicago Medical College, now known as Northwestern University Medical School. After graduation from Northwestern, Dr. Williams opened his own medical office in Chicago. When Dr. Williams graduated from medical school, black doctors were not allowed to work in Chicago hospitals. As a result, Dr. Williams opened Provident Hospital and training school for nurses in Chicago. In 1895, Dr. Williams was the co-founder of the National Medical Association for African American doctors. By 1913, he was the only African American doctor in the American College of Surgeons.
