For years I have been readin g Nota Bene- first as collection officer at Northwestern and more recenrl)' as a

T here simpl y isn'r a better place ro be a libra rian rhan
at Ya le !
In its very shield, Yale declares itself (Q be a universiry
of th e open book . T he joc-year rradir io n of th e primed
book is represented here in collec rions of brearhraking
scope a nd depth . I am commirted to keeping o ur collecti o ns strong, to enhancing their util ity for teaching and
research, a nd to preserv ing them so they will rema in
avai lab le to a ll who will , in the futu re, ca ll upon the
primed word to bu ild und ersta nding and to d iscover
wi sdom .
At the same ti me, the electronic wo rd is rra nsfor ming

tweney years o ld, but I a m committed to ens uring that
the benefits of comp uters and networked commun ication are fu ll y avai lab le to the Ya le commu ni ty. Libra ries
have been leaders in the adopt ion of new technologies,
and th ere is a strong ba se on which to build at Yale.
Ba lancing and adva ncing the cul tures of both the
printed and the electronic word make this a challenging
time to be a librarian and a wonde rfu l time to be at
Yale. I look forwa rd to meeting as many readers of Nota
Bene as possible. Because rhat wi ll take some time, I
wo uld like everyone who reads this newsletter to know
how glad I a m to be a t Ya le as director of its worldclass li bra ries. I sllcceed many disti nguished d irecrors.
In the tradition rhey ha ve created, I hope to serve yo u,
the uni ve rsiry, and o ur librar ies well .
