To avoid repeating a place name, you can say there instead.
—Are you going to Quebec?
—Yes, I’m going there.
In English, as long as your meaning is clear, you don’t have to include the word
there.
—Is he at the doctor’s office?
—No, he’s not.
A Underline the words that could be replaced with there.
1. Mom’s at the store.
2. I can’t wait to go to Montreal.
3. John and Julie are in the library.
4. Her best friend is moving to Seattle.
5. The State Fair takes place in Dallas.
6. They go to France often.
7. Are you going to the art museum?
To avoid repeating places and locations, you can use the pronoun y. Y can
replace names of places that start with a preposition of location such as à, dans, en,
sur, and chez.
In French
—Tu peux aller au supermarché?
—Bien sûr. J’y vais tout de suite.
—Est-ce que le sucre est sur la table?
—Oui, il y est.
The pronoun y follows the same rules of placement as direct and indirect object
pronouns. It goes before the conjugated verb, or if there is an infinitive, directly
before the infinitive.
—Tu aimes aller au café?
—Je n’y vais pas souvent, mais de temps en temps, j’aime bien y aller.

When talking about quantities, you can use the words some, any, of
number, or an expression of quantity like a lot, to avoid repeating a noun.
I’ve got some almonds. Do you want some?
I need sugar. Do you have any?
I love green tea. I drink a lot of it.
Do you have seedless watermelons? I would like two of them.
In English
it/them, a
A Circle the words some, any, of it/of them, or an expression of quantity in the
following sentences. Then underline the noun to which it refers.
1. I love chocolate so I eat a lot of it.
2. Juice? No, I don’t want any.
3. I haven’t read my e-mails because there are too many of them.

6. Yes, this is my popcorn and you can grab some.
7. I bought a box of candy but I don’t have any left.

Some and any can sometimes be translated as en. The pronoun en replaces
an indefinite or partitive article + noun.
—Tu veux du yaourt? (Would you like some yogurt?)
—Non, merci, je n’en veux pas. (No, thanks, I don’t want any.)
In French
—Est-ce qu’il y a des ordinateurs ici? (Are there any computers here?)
—Oui, il y en a. (Yes, there are some.)
also replaces nouns that follow numbers or expressions of quantity. In this case,
you normally still use the number or the expression of quantity in the sentence with
en.
—Tu manges beaucoup de sandwiches?
—Oui, j’en mange beaucoup. J’en prends souvent un à midi.
—Moi, j’en prends souvent deux!
—Et moi, je n’en prends pas.
En
Like object pronouns, en is placed before the conjugated verb or before the infinitive
if there is one.
De la glace? Je n’en veux pas. Mais demain, je vais en manger.
