About Sound Development City
Sound Development City is a three-week artist expedition to two annually changing cities. The expedition crew
consists of a dozen artists coming from different geographical, cultural and artistic backgrounds. They are selected
through an open call for projects that is geared towards
artists who distinguish themselves through a processoriented approach to their work, their curiosity and an explorative mindset.
Sound Development City is a place for artistic research and concepts which benefit from being on the road
and probe urban environments as sites of both playfulness
and social involvement. Here, working theses can be exam­
ined, new project ideas or forms of expression can be tried
out and bold visions can be put into practice. The expedition offers freedom of choice and action, without the pressure of measurable results — a strong focus is placed on
process and on daring ideas.
While the expedition’s target cities serve as resonating urban space, as work material, sources of inspiration and playgrounds for public presentations, the expedition creates a fertile soil for exchange, reflection and
cooperation. Sound Development City is also an inward
journey to personal thought and work patterns, which are
challenged and maybe even realigned through the experience of the unknown and the unpredictable.
Sound Development City is a project by Sound
Development, a non-commercial, independent and privately funded cultural initiative based in Zurich, Switzer-
land. The expedition format was developed in collaboration with Heller Enterprises, a Swiss agency for cultural
projects. Sound Development City is financed by Sound
Development and put into practice by Heller Enterprises.
Artist Expedition 2016
On September 6, 2016, a group of twelve artists from ten
countries, four team members, one expedition writer and
one radio editor embarked on an expedition to Madrid
and Casablanca. For the first time in its five-year history,
the Sound Development City expedition ventured beyond the confines of Europe and into Africa.
The artists were selected out of a total of 424 applicants from 66 countries by an international jury consisting
of Hassan Darsi (La Source du Lion, Casablanca), Esther
Eppstein (Message Salon, Zurich), Martin Heller (Heller Enterprises, Zurich), Gianmarco Marchetta (Sound
Development, Zurich) and Gema Melgar (Matadero Madrid/El Ranchito, Madrid). The evaluation was based on
artistic quality and originality, feasibility of realisation as
well as the research-based approach of the project proposals. The applicants’ inquisitive personality was also taken
into consideration.
The twelve artists formed a heterogeneous group,
coming from such diverse disciplines as animation film,
dance, intermedia art, sound art and music. During Sound
Development City, they worked on ten projects that followed a wide range of subjects and narrative lines.
The first seven days were spent in Madrid, the last
eight in Casablanca. The journey in-between, which the
artists undertook individually by land and by sea, from
one continent to the other, was an integral part of the expedition; it served as a shift in the working process and offered time for reflection and further research.
In Madrid, the expedition set up its headquarters
at the artist-run space Nadie, Nunca, Nada, No. — referred to as NNNN — and in Casablanca at the school
and art space La Parallèle. In Madrid, two of the artists
had the chance to make use of a gallery space, La Juan; the
expedition’s participants also worked with the infrastructure of the self-managed cultural centre Tabacalera.These
venues served as workspaces and places for presentations,
rehearsals and workshops but also — especially in Casablanca — as oases in the midst of foreign lands.
In both cities, the expedition was supported by
dedicated local teams — fairy godmothers — that provided access to the local art scene, collaborators, hidden corners and vibrant spots. Through them, the group was welcomed with open arms, was immediately introduced to
cultural peculiarities and had access to the cities’ rough
edges and abysses, sweet spots and beauty.
Sound Development City 2016 was strongly
impacted by the paralyzing heat of Madrid and the powerful cultural diversity of Casablanca. But more than that,
it was each artist’s single-minded dedication that formed
the expedition and made it a rich, unforgettable and successful adventure.
From the very beginning the twelve participants
overwhelmed us with their openness towards the format
and the unfamiliar working situation, and especially towards each other. They arrived with verve, curiosity and a
readiness to take risks, and they preserved this spirit until
the last moment. They engaged with the previously unknown cities and their inhabitants, looking for a breeding
ground for their projects and research, which they found
again and again in various forms. And they endured the
unknown and the “not knowing” and adapted their concepts to become reality step by step by coming up with
new ideas, sensoria and tools.
Through it all, the expedition grew organically to
become a dense experiential space and a shared creative
journey.The agenda, which had purposely been left blank
from the beginning, was steadily filled with spontaneous
public as well as internal activities that peaked on the
second last day in Casablanca: during the Expedition Discoveries, all participants presented insights into their
working processes.
On September 26, Sound Development City end­
ed on the rooftop terrace of La Parallèle in Casablanca
in a comfortable temperature and with emotional words.
A group of unknown individuals that had started a journey on an extremely hot day in Madrid had become a community of like-minded people saying goodbye with heavy
hearts.
Documentation
To document these — sometimes fleeting — moments,
thoughts and artistic experiments, the Sound Development City website served as a multi-voiced logbook by
channelling content from various authors and sources:
texts, sketches, snippets, photos, sound pieces, radio interviews and videos added up to become a collective expedition diary.
The artists documented their work, their expe­
riences and reflections and offered insight into ongoing
processes.
Author Uwe Lützen accompanied the group as an
expedition writer. His mission was to watch and listen, to
travel with the group and to document the artists’ work.
During the expedition he published notes, articles and
personal observations on the Sound Development City
website, which after the journey he processed into an essay
that can be read in this book.
The Sound Development City team created a daily
photo journal. Radio interviews with the artists and with
local cultural activists were produced together with artist
and 2014 expedition participant Andreas Oskar Hirsch.
These were broadcast on the expedition’s online 24/7
web radio, the Gap Station.
Last but not least, the expedition was accompanied by local photographers Jonay PMatos in Madrid and
Zakaria Wakrim in Casablanca, both of whom captured
the expedition’s atmosphere and the artists’ work through
their lenses.
The content found in the following pages comes
mostly from these sources, while certain reflections, Uwe
Lützen’s essay and Andreas Oskar Hirsch’s travelogue
were added after the fact.

Traveling backwards along the migration route of recent decades, Bernadette La Hengst opens her mobile Café Europa in
Madrid, Casablanca and in-between, asking people to pay for
their drinks in the currency of a love song.
Is Europe still the promised land, or is there a better perspective waiting in Casablanca? Inspired by the Café Américain
from the film Casablanca, the artist will collect melodies and
lyrics about love and visions between Orient and Occident to fill
her Café Europa jukebox with future Eurabian love songs. Each
love song can be defined as a love song for a person or a love song
about the city the contributor is based in or the city they long for.
Songs about home in general, or about the absence of love.
About the right to love the one you choose, the right to fail, to
leave, the right to have children or to be homosexual. The mobile
Café Europa is an open stage, a recording studio and a café where
water, tea and music will be served.

to learn something from art.

linked with my personal emotions. But it’s not important that
it be autobiographical. I also tell stories about other people. So
I would call myself a political songwriter. Even if that word is

Tomorrow I will start my trip to Madrid and Casablanca to open
my mobile Café Europa out of my car and collect love songs­10
In Madrid I opened the café in two public squares that were very
different from each other. One was full of young people, kids,
street musicians — comparable to a square you might see in
Hamburg or Berlin … It was easy to get the people involved.
They were not scared because they might know art projects like
that in the urban space, or maybe because some of them were11
street musicians, I don’t know. So I asked them. Some of them
sat at my table, got some tea and ate cakes and played some songs.
There was one very special girl, Clara. She came with her
ukulele. I saw her passing by, and I said, “Hey, come on. Let’s
have a seat. Let’s have a chat.” And then I found out she was fourteen years old. She played the ukulele very well, and she had a
beautiful voice. And I asked her, “What do you think about love?
Are you in a relationship? Have you been in love?” And then she
introduced me to her girlfriend, who was with her, fourteen
years old as well. So that was their first love story. It was really
special. And then I started to write a song with her. I asked her,
“What do you think about love? What does love mean to you?
Is there a difference between having a relationship with a girl in
Madrid and having a relationship with a boy?” and so on. So we
started to discuss, and then we wrote a song together. We created a very familiar and intimate atmosphere in this public space.
That was quite a good start for the whole project.

I wrote another song together with two Spanish girls; the chorus was, “How does love sound in Madrid? How does love sound
after the crisis?” And then, “It’s in the heat, in the colour, in the
heat, in the colour of Chamberí” — that’s a district. I asked some
rappers to freestyle in the verses, and I invited this wonderful
man called Julio, who helped us get contacts and organise all the
things at Tabacalera, an independent collective cultural centre
in Madrid. He is a very big talent in freestyle rapping, or slam
poetry. He and two friends of his.

When I write love songs, it’s not only about love. Most of the
time, they are linked to something different. I sometimes hide
the message in a love song, so that you listen to a song two or
three times, and then the third time you understand it’s not just
about having sex with someone, but it’s about the integration
discourse as well.
I try to move the people with my songs and with my music,
but at the same time the lyrics are contradictory, and they want
something. They want to change something in the mind of my
audience.

I had the opportunity and good fortune to be in a studio in
Madrid with two Madrilenian musicians who played sitar and
a Greek guitar called bouzouki. And Dan Allon, the artist from
Israel, he played the drums. We recorded two songs. It’s a lot of
material that I’ve already collected. I just have to find out what,
in the end, it will be? Will there be some new songs for my next
album? Will I do an album, my trip from Madrid to Casablanca, called Café Europa? I don’t know yet.

On our way in the mothership to the south coast of Spain on
Avenida de Europa, where I found a tattered EU flag blowing17
in the wind … Hope to open my Café Europa tonight in Los
Caños de Meca.

In Tangier, Tarik, who transported the technical equipment of
Sound Development City, offers to let us stay the night at his
family’s place. Tarik’s father is the only one who speaks French;
the women speak only Arabic, and one son a bit of English. It’s
crazy how far you can get talking with your hands and feet. Unfortunately, the handful of sentences of Modern Standard Arabic that I spent months practicing with my Syrian friend are no
help at all here. But there is the universal language of music,
after all. After we’ve feasted on Moroccan delicacies, I play a few
songs on my guitar. The ladies of the house sing along enthusiastically — they seem to be especially enamoured of the word
“Verlust” (loss), and they also join in on “Nein, nein, nein”. My
Café Europa is open for business, and I ask them to sing me a
love song.They belt out, “I am difficult, but love me just the same!”
Finally arrived in Casablanca yesterday. Now I’m walking through
the city, experiencing a bit of culture shock, because it’s so different. But in the end it’s just a question of perspective. Who is
different from whom? Just saw some boys jumping into the sea
in front of the mosque, and I found Rick’s Café, the Café Améri­
cain — the inspiration for my Café Europa.

In Casablanca, everything starts shifting. I’m shattered, rattled
and amazed. The street grime of the medina is sticking to me
from the tips of my toes to the ends of my hair. The exhaust
fumes wear me down. The air smells of urine, like after the
Schlagermove pop festival in Hamburg. Glue-sniffing beggars
sleeping next to mountains of trash — maybe they’ve lost their
sense of smell.
Cultural riches and poverty are so close together here.

Unfortunately, I’m unable to find any female musicians in Casa­
blanca — women seem to be as invisible in the music scene as
they are in the cafés, where I’m the only woman drinking tea in
the evenings.
I open my Café Europa in the parking lot of the Technopark shopping mall in front of Boultek, Centre de musiques
actuelles. A heavy metal band plays Moroccan blues with me.
Sadly, the passing girls are all a bit shy; instead, Ibrahim confidently plays his indie rock songs for me.

Back at our headquarters at La Parallèle, jazz singer Yacine tells
me about the revolutionary poetess and singer Kharboucha, who
led the revolt against the feudal lords at the beginning of the last
century and who, after the revolution was crushed, was buried
alive by the king. Yacine plays one of her love songs for me — a very
difficult rhythm, but a wonderfully tragic tune. I respond with
my own new idea for a song in the Moroccan 6/8 time: “Gheda
inchallah, sa ejido al hob fieh Casablanca. Tomorrow, God willing, I’ll find love in Casablanca.” Yacine immediately writes an
additional verse and sings like an Oriental musical star. Reading
from his little notebook, the political slam poet Hamza raps
along in such a weirdly gentle way about the hardness of the city
that I have the impression of understanding every single word.

Biography
Bernadette La Hengst DE
*1967
Bernadette La Hengst, based in Berlin,
is an electro-pop musician, singer-songwriter and theatre director with a passion
for political and social issues and utopian
ideas. She was singer and guitarist for the
Hamburg pop-punk girl band Die Braut
haut ins Auge (1990–2000). Her current
solo album, her fifth, is called Save the
World with This Melody. Since 2004 she
has developed many participative theatre
projects as a musician and director, and
she is an expert in founding impromptu
choirs everywhere.

Sound Development
Sound Development is an independent
cultural initiative based in Zurich. It was
founded by Nia Schmidheiny in 2002.
She thus extended the definition of how
her family had been supporting the arts
for generations.
Sound Development’s general objective has been to inspire and support artists through practical experience, to provide knowledge and contacts as well as
to connect people and artists. The pro­
motional efforts were based on different
projects, such as Music Apartment or
LofiDogma, realised as in-house and coproductions. Sound Development has
also been interested in alternative forms
of art and cultural promotion.
The combination of non-commercial orientation and private funding has
allowed the freedom and flexibility needed for an uncompromising implementation, independent from formal concepts
and with an open mind for new methods
and strategies.
Sound Development City was one of
Sound Development’s major projects and
was created in collaboration with Heller
Enterprises. Sound Development wanted to give selected international artists a
platform and the opportunity to realise
trans-disciplinary projects. Personal encounters and collaborative work played a
key role in developing new ideas — away
from academic or institutional settings.
The artist expedition format offered exact­
ly the space and time to do research and to
develop a project — without necessarily
targeting a final product.
Over five years and five expeditions,
Heller Enterprises and Sound Development have supported international artists
to discover new directions and establish
new contacts.
We now intend to bring the project
to an end with the 2016 Sound Development City expedition to Madrid and
Casablanca.
We can look back on a rewarding
time, great encounters and remarkable
projects, and we thank all the participants
who have contributed to the character
and lasting success of Sound Development City.
