The OAAs assess the academic standards taught at each grade level. Children are expected to read and
write in every subject. They answer multiple choice questions and provide short answers and longer, extended
responses in every subject. Students work with these standards daily and many students are attending our before or after-school Achievement Lab for additional practice.
The booklet A Standards Guide for Families highlights some of the skills that your child should know and
be able to do at his/her grade level. A complete set of the grade level Academic Content Standards was given at
Curriculum Night in the fall and is also available at www.ode.state.oh.us. This web site also provides more information about the Achievement Assessments, including Practice Tests.
Please do not schedule appointments for students in grades 3-5 from April 27-May 5.

IMPORTANT DISTRICTWIDE SURVEY COMING!
Lakewood City Schools will be conducting an important district wide survey on Thursday, April 7,
and we need your help in making it successful. The district is looking to determine the availability of reliable Internet access in students’ homes. This information will help us in determining how we move forward with more efficient and effective communication with families and students as well as explore other
educational opportunities.
If you have an email on file with the district, you will receive an email with a link to the onequestion survey. If you do not have an email on file, you will receive an automated phone call between 7-8
p.m. on April 7 that will ask you one question. It is very important that we receive as high of participation
as possible, so please try to be available to answer this call.
If you do not receive an email or a phone call on April 7, you may go to the district web site at
www.lakewoodcityschools.org and take the quick survey.
As always, thank you for your support of Lakewood City Schools.

FAMILY INVOLVEMENT
The National PTA has published standards for parent involvement programs. These
standards are based on more than 85 research studies. When parents are involved, students achieve more, regardless of
socioeconomic status, ethnic background, or the parents’ education level.
The more extensive the parent involvement, the higher the student achievement.
When parents are involved in their students’ education, those students have higher grades and test scores, better attendance, and complete homework more consistently.
When parents are involved, students exhibit more positive attitudes and behavior.
Students whose parents are involved in their lives have higher graduation rates and greater
enrollment rates in post-secondary education.
Educators hold higher expectations of students whose parents collaborate with the teacher.
All of our efforts at school can’t take the place of your support and help at home. You are an
integral part of your child’s success. Thanks for all you do for your child as his or her first and
most important teacher!
Horace Mann is "going green" with our new and updated recycling program.
Our school received new blue recycling buckets for each classroom and hallway. These materials were made possible from a grant with the Cuyahoga
County Solid Waste Division. The Abitibi paper recycling bin is still located
at McKinley School in the parking lot. This receptacle collects paper such as
newspapers, magazines, office paper, etc. Our school receives a small stipend for these recyclable paper materials. Every little bit helps!

CHANGES IN IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS!
Beginning with the 2010-2011 school year, the Ohio Department of Health made changes to the required
immunizations needed for incoming Kindergarten and 7th grade. Therefore, any new incoming Kindergarten, 1st, 7th and 8th grade students will have the following requirements:
Kindergarten and 1st grade: A second dose of Varicella (chicken pox) is needed
7th and 8th grade: Either a Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis) or Td booster is needed
Unless otherwise exempt, students not providing evidence of the shot being given or an
appointment date will be excluded from school within 14 school days.
A Message from Ms. Brown, our School Nurse
We are a land of plenty and most of that is good. However, an increasing number
of young people are showing the effects of being overweight and/or obese. Many
recent health articles have raised concerns about the dangers for overweight children. These include:
1. The risk of developing Type II Diabetes
2 .Increased severity of asthma problems
3. Elevated cholesterol levels which could lead to heart problems
If you are concerned about your child’s weight, here are some suggestions:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
First, check with his/her doctor before starting an exercise/nutrition program
Supply whole grain healthy snacks –pretzels, popcorn, assorted raw nuts and seeds, vegetables and
fruits instead of chips, cakes, candy, French fries, et al
Encourage daily exercise from walking to aerobics
Limit TV/Video use daily.
Talk to a nutritionist for further suggestions
CENSUS SUCCESS!
Census data has been released and thanks to the hard work of many civic organizations, including Lakewood City Schools, Lakewood has retained its federal entitlement status
by staying above the 50,000 mark in population. The official number of residents is 52,131.
Lakewood retaining its entitlement status was critical for our schools as money from
this allocation goes toward important programs for our students such as Title I, Head Start,
special and adult education and college grants and loans.
Thanks to the team work of so many of Lakewood’s non-profits, our school parent –teacher organizations, and of
course, the City of Lakewood, many of our students’ needs will continue to be served. The collaboration between all with a
stake in the outcome of the Census underscores the great partnerships we have in Lakewood. The Census results are just another
example that proves that strong communities build strong schools. Thank you to everyone who made sure they were counted!
