Snapshot of Year 1 Date: 12th May 2017 What we are learning English: This week in English we wrote our Gruffalo story! We learned how to write stories in our own words and had loads of fun writing the whole story! Can you say the story in your own words? Maths: This week in Maths we looked at 2D and 3D shapes and their properties. How many sides does a pentagon have? How many faces does a cube have? Project Based Learning: This week we looked at pollarded trees! We learned what it means to pollard a tree and why people do it. Can you remember why people pollard trees? Science: This week in Science we looked at different parts of a plant. We looked at different vegetables then labelled a plant. We also checked up on our bean plants! What part of a plant is broccoli? Important Dates Read Every Night! 16th May - Shoesday! Wear your favourite shoes to school! £1 donation to Living Streets. 26th May - INSET day. School closed. 12th - 16th June - Phonics testing week for Year 1 29th - 30th June - Whole school Art exhibition for parents 3rd July - Childhood promise trip to Kew Gardens 12th July - Afternoon Sunflower performance 13th July - Morning Sunflower performance 21st July - Last day of school. School closes 2pm. Notes from the teachers Value of the month: Courage - The ability to do something that frightens you. Word of the week this week was: felicitous - Well-chosen or suited to the circumstances "a felicitous phrase” - Pleasing and fortunate "the view was the room's only felicitous feature" Shoesday: This Tuesday is Shoesday. Living Streets is a charity which promotes walking to school/work and living a healthy lifestyle, they work with schools, help disabled members of the community and they help to make our roads safer. To celebrate Shoesday everyone is invited to wear their favourite shoes to school for the day! Children will still be in school uniform but they can choose to wear their favourite shoes! Homework: Have a read of our new Talk 4 Writing story! Phonics: Please practise reading these words and if you like, there are some really fun free phonics games on the PhonicsPlay website. We encourage sounding and blending of each word. Ask your child to show you robot arms! Handwriting Handwriting is a crucial element of writing in Year 1.
