Geography Road Trip Day 4

Name: ________________________________________ Ready for a Road Trip?
Day Four Travel Profile:
• Starting line: Chicago, Illinois
• Map Skill Focus:
o Latitude and Longitude
o Map Scale
Drawn to Scale
Remember that a map is a visual representation of a much larger area of land. In order to be useful, a map must
be small enough to be handled by an individual. For example, 10 miles of land might be represented by a
centimeter on a map.
Maps are scaled down so that they fit on the available paper or screen. When scaling down a map, every part of
the map is scaled by the same amount. This insures that every object on the map is proportionate to everything
else on the map. This is so that map-readers can tell the exact distance between two places.
Part 1: Measuring Distance with a Map Scale
1: Put your finger on the map scale on page 253 in your textbook. It shows that about 2 inches
represents 250 miles on this political map of the United States.
2: Bend your twist-tie so that it is the same length as the map scale.
3: Place one end of your twist-tie on Chicago, Illinois. Place the other end on St. Louis, Missouri. About
how many miles away from Chicago is St. Louis?
___________________________
4: Place one end of your twist-tie on Grand Rapids, Michigan. Place the other end on Fort Wayne,
Indiana. About how many miles away from Fort Wayne is Grand Rapids?
___________________________
(Hint: Grand Rapids is about ½ a twist-tie away, so think about finding half of 250.)
5: Place one end of your twist-tie on Seattle, Washington. Then, find Boise, Idaho. About how far is
Seattle from Boise?
___________________________
(Hint: You will need to use your twist-tie more than once so think of an addition problem that will give you the answer.)
Part 2: Rocky’s Road Trip
Rocky Balboa is going on a boxing tour of the United States! He has asked you to help him plan
his trip by figuring out the mileage. Your job is to calculate the distance between each pair of
cities on Rocky’s trip.
Don’t forget to include labels (miles) in your answers
1: Rocky’s trip begins in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. He is traveling to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where
they will roll out the red carpet for a screening of Rocky 1 on the steps of the Art Institute…the actual
Rocky Stairs!
•
Pittsburg to Philadelphia: ______________________________________
2: In Philadelphia, Rocky bought a birthday gift for Adrian and a condolence card for Apollo
Creed…since Rocky beat him in Rocky 2. They are both in Cincinnati, Ohio, so Rocky is on his way to
meet them.

3: Adrian loved her birthday gift! After all, their pet turtles, Cuff and Link, really did want a new friend!
Now Rocky, Adrian, Cuff and Link, and their new pet dog Butkus are on their way to Atlanta, Georgia for
a relaxing vacation!
•
Cincinnati to Atlanta: ________________________________________

Tennessee where they will visit Sun Studios and Graceland before they watch Rocky’s movies 3-6.
