Previous Teaching: A Personal Cross
Matthew 16:24-25: Then Jesus said to his disciples, "If anyone would come after me, he
must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save his
life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it."
1.True Giving
Luke 21:1-4: As he looked up, Jesus saw the rich putting their gifts into the temple treasury. He also saw a poor widow put in two very small copper coins. "I tell you the truth,"
he said, "this poor widow has put in more than all the others. All these people gave their
gifts out of their wealth; but she out of her poverty put in all she had to live on."

2. Giving Under the Law
Hebrews 7:1-7: This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met
Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him, and Abraham gave him
a tenth of everything. First, his name means "king of righteousness"; then also, "king of
Salem" means "king of peace." Without father or mother, without genealogy, without
beginning of days or end of life, like the Son of God he remains a priest forever. Just think
how great he was: Even the patriarch Abraham gave him a tenth of the plunder! Now
the law requires the descendants of Levi who become priests to collect a tenth from the
people--that is, their brothers--even though their brothers are descended from Abraham. This man, however, did not trace his descent from Levi, yet he collected a tenth
from Abraham and blessed him who had the promises. And without doubt the lesser
person is blessed by the greater.

3.Freedom to Give
2 Corinthians 9:6-12: Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly,
and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. Each man should give what he
has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a
cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at
all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. As it is written:
"He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." Now
he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your
store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. You will be made rich in
every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God. This service that you perform is not only supplying
the needs of God's people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God.

Let's talk about it (small group discussion questions):
1.What did Jesus see in the heart of the "poor widow" who put two small coins
in the temple treasury?
2.Review these passages: Genesis 14:18-20; Leviticus 27:30-34; Numbers 18:25-26;
Deuteronomy 14:22-29; and 2 Chronicles 31:5. What were the purposes of tithing
according to the Old Testament law?
3. What were the warnings and promises of Malachi 3:6-18?
4. Is any form of giving a requirement according to the New Testament?
5. What are the dangers of being stingy?
6. What are the benefits and blessings of being generous?
7. Would you categorize yourself as stingy, charitable, or abundantly generous?
