Acknowledgement of the current document and feedback to GE is a pre-requisite for the GE service personnel to install and test the ÄKTA system. Installation and testing of the ÄKTA system can be performed under standard conditions or in a cold room/cold cabinet, as required. Assign personnel The following table gives suggestions and summarizes specific site-preparation tasks that can be divided between two to three company personnel. It is also recommended that these people assist the GE service personnel during the installation process later on. Personnel Tasks Site preparation/ installation coordinator • Review the site preparation guide for safety information and system requirements. • Choose the site. • Coordinate personnel and tasks. • Coordinate the installation timing of the ÄKTA system with any domestic safety procedures and testings. • Order required materials. • Schedule the installation and inform personnel of the installation date. • Review the safety information. • Make sure that all customer-provided materials for the installation are present at the site. • Make sure that the installation requirements are met for: Laboratory personnel/ Primary users Facilities personnel 6 - Space at the installation site - Environmental conditions - Biosafety - Ventilation and waste collection - Electrical supply - Safety and installation materials ÄKTA instrument Site Preparation Guide 29-1170-36 AA 2 Site preparation overview Select the site Select a site that complies with national and international requirements for biosafety. WARNING Spread of biological agents. The operator has to take all necessary actions to avoid spreading hazardous biological agents. The facility must comply with the national code of practice for biosafety. Space requirements Prepare a clean, even and stable working area according to the dimensions shown in the following table. NOTICE At least 1 m free working space is needed around the ÄKTA system during installation. Environmental requirements The ÄKTA system is for indoor use only. Make sure that the installation and operation site comply with the following conditions: ÄKTA instrument Site Preparation Guide 29-1170-36 AA 7 2 Site preparation overview Condition Acceptable range Ambient temperature 4° to 40°C Atmospheric pressure 84 to 106 kPa (840 to 1060 mbar) WARNING A fume hood or similar ventilation system shall be installed when flammable or noxious substances are used. Electrical requirements The number of mains electrical outlets with safety grounding (100-240 V, 50-60 Hz) is specified in the checklist. External computer requirements The use of a GE computer is recommended. A non-GE computer with 64-bit Windows® operating system is acceptable if it complies with the requirements in the table below. Complete the checklist in this chapter to make sure that all necessary preparations have been made before the installation of the ÄKTA system by GE service personnel.
