Grade 10 Mock Examination Booklet September 2016 Page |4 Preparing for the Examinations Helpful hints Familiarise yourself with your examination timetable. Ensure that you know exactly what work will be covered in each subject, the format of each exam paper, the time allocation, the equipment that may be needed for the examination (e.g. calculator for Mathematics). Get copies of old examination papers and worksheets. By now all your notes should be up to date and you should have all that you need to study effectively for the examinations. Prepare your study area. Some things to consider are: have a good source of light have lots of paper available a clear work surface coloured pens if you prefer to use colour light or unobtrusive music if you prefer to learn with music Keeping healthy Eat fresh foods such as fruit and nuts. Pile up on the vegetables in the evenings and drink plenty of water and fruit juice to keep the flu at bay. The brain needs to be fed well in order that it performs at its optimum. Try not to nibble on too many chocolates and sweets while studying. That said, the odd sweet or chocolate will provide an energy boost when you feel really tired. Getting a good night’s rest is also important. Sleep will rejuvenate you and keep you going. Grade 10 Mock Examination Booklet September 2016 Page |5 Devising a Revision Timetable If you plan your revision carefully you will enjoy the feeling of being well-prepared for the examinations, secure in the knowledge that you have done your best and have covered all the work. Create a calendar for this purpose, using bright colours/larger paper etc. Start by marking in the dates and times of your examinations. Shade in the dates and times when you know you have other commitments, e.g. sports fixtures/family function. Work out how much time you would need per section per subject. Remember to spend more time on those subjects you find more difficult. Using a pencil, begin to draw up your revision timetable by writing in the subject and the sections that you wish to cover each day. You could leave a revision time blank each week, as a “safety net” for work not covered as planned. This may be as a result of those unforeseen circumstances that make life interesting. Do not get stressed out if you don’t stick rigidly to the timetable. Sometimes you start by expecting to cover too much at one time. The main idea is to get you to focus on the work that needs to be covered and to work towards a goal. Be sure to timetable rest and relaxation. Before changing subjects, take a longer break of about 20 – 30 minutes and try to get outside or do something different. Grade 10 Mock Examination Booklet September 2016 Page |6 Study Methods Each one of you will have your own method of studying and it is important that you feel comfortable with your chosen style. It is equally important that you admit if your method has not worked in the past. Here are some tips that you may like to try out. These are tried and tested methods. Start by reading through a section from beginning to end. This will give you an overview of what is to come. Focus on headings and pictures and diagrams. Ask questions as to the content of the section (why, what, when, where, how and who?). This will help to get your mind in touch with the main areas within each section. (E.g.: What do I need to know about this topic? What exactly is this text about? How does this section link up with what I have just studied?) Re-read the passage with the aim to answering your questions. Look up words you do not understand, refer closely to graphs and diagrams, highlight important ideas in colour, etc. Do not try to make notes at this stage. Aim to check that you have understood the work. Think about the passage and focus on key points. Re-read the passage making notes on the relevant material. This may take the form of block notes or diagrammatic notes e.g. mind maps/spider diagrams. It is a good idea to redo Mathematics exercises and worksheets as well as work through past papers. Diagrams can become excellent forms of summary in subjects such as Geography and Biology. A diagram should be drawn clearly with large labels for easy identification. When encouraging a difficulty concept, try to break it up into smaller units and talk your way through the steps of the problem. If you have difficulty remembering something, pin up key words on your bedroom wall or cupboard door as a constant reminder. Each time you walk past the word, stop and ask yourself a question or two about it so as to trigger off a response. In language, you need to understand the rule to apply it, e.g. rules for the verlede tyd. Review. Aim to ensure that you remember what you have learned by doing review worksheets/past papers/testing yourself with questions that you set or working with a friend and testing each other verbally. Just before the examination Get a good night’s sleep. Have a good breakfast. Arrive at the venue with time to spare. Make sure you have the right equipment, tissues, watch, etc. During the examination Don’t rush into answering questions. Read the instructions at the beginning to ensure that you know how to answer all the questions and how many questions to answer. Read through the questions carefully. If there is a choice of questions make your choice carefully. Underline key words in the questions. Stick to the time plan given to you by your teacher. At the end of the examination, if you have time, read through your paper to check that you have answered all the questions. Grade 10 Mock Examination Booklet September 2016 Page |7 Accounting Structure of Examination You are writing on the entire syllabus. You will be writing 2 examination papers. Paper Duration Marks Weighting 1 1hr45 120 50% 2 1hr45 120 50% Paper 1 This is a structured question paper with 8–12 multiple choice items and short-answer questions. There are usually between 4 and 5 questions based on topics from the whole of the syllabus. All questions are compulsory, and candidates answer on the question paper. There are 120 marks for this paper. Paper 2 This is a structured question paper. There are usually 4 to 6 questions based on topics from the whole of the syllabus. All questions are compulsory, and candidates answer on the question paper. There are 120 marks for this paper. Revision techniques Prepare a study timetable to ensure you are studying well in advance. The best way to prepare is to work through past papers under the correct time pressure without notes. This can be unpleasant if you don’t feel like you know enough of your work but it is the best way to distinguish between the work you know well from the work you don’t. Once you have done this, try to answer questions you have left out or not completed by using your notes and textbook. Know all your layouts and formula. Read all the questions carefully before you start writing and note the “easy” and “doable” ones. Do those questions first. You are only given a certain amount of space for each question so use that space wisely. Practice writing neatly and logically. When answering the question paper Be extremely neat. Make life for the examiner as easy as possible. Do the easiest questions first. Well answered questions help to build confidence. Do not leave out any questions. Time yourself. Show all your workings. Always mention the formula used, if you have used one. In the case of ratios, for example, you must be accurate when giving your final answer. Make it clear whether the answer is a percentage, for example, or a number of times, a number of days etc. Teacher contact details Mrs D Swart [email protected] Grade 10 Mock Examination Booklet September 2016 Page |8 Afrikaans First Language Structure of Examination Vraestel 1 Begripstoets en Vergelyking (2 uur) Vraestel 2 Twee Opstelle – Verhalend en redenerend (2 uur) Content Vraestel 1 Begripstoets en Vergelyking (50) Vraestel 2 Twee Opstelle – Verhalend en redenerend (50) Revision techniques Lees elke dag Die Burger en luister na die nuus in Afrikaans. Students must make sure that both their Mock and Final Examination pieces answer the question and conclude their new portfolios that they’ve developed in the term. NB!! All reference material (photos / studies / term paintings etc.) must be stuck up before hand and must be brought on the first day of the final examination (and kept in the venue throughout the examination period) or the work will not be submitted to Cambridge. Therefore, students may need to stay after their Mock Exam to finish sticking up their work if they are unable to complete this in the allocated time given in class. Revision techniques They will do planning for the examination throughout the term and have this portfolio with them throughout both exam periods. The September Mock Examination will act as the main support piece for their Final Examination in October. Resources available to you: Art kits to be brought in to the examination. All other general materials will be supplied. Students must make sure they have all their reference material with them at the start of the examination. You should try to learn the meanings of common prefixes so that you can guess meanings of words. You should practise summarising passages. This is a specific and almost scientific skill, which once gained, makes it easily possible to get full marks. You can practise turning passages into news reports; they have a particular style and structure which are different from any other kind of writing Practise writing formal letters; it is highly likely you will be asked to write a letter on either the Reading or Writing paper. Letters to people in official positions and people you do not know well typically adopt a formal style and polite tone, and they are structured in three sections: i) the topic of the letter/reason for writing it; ii) background information, arguments and factual details; iii) request or suggestions for future action. Writing: Practise joining simple sentences into complex sentences, using a range of connectives and participles. Above all avoid using ‘and’, ‘but’ and ‘so’. Practise varying your sentences to develop your own style. You do not want your sentences all to follow the same formula and start in the same way. Learn the correct version of commonly misspelt words, which you know you are likely to need to use e.g. separate, definitely, business, opportunity, surprise, privilege. Practise using different forms of punctuation to add variety to your writing style. Try writing a plan for a story, then experimenting with different ways to end it. DO NOT end the story by waking up from a dream - that just means that as a writer you could not think of an ending to explain what had happened in your story in any other way – a sure sign of poor planning!
