Repairs to bridges along I-295 in Camden, Gloucester
and Salem counties to begin next week
Forty-nine bridges will receive preventive maintenance
(Trenton) – New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a
preventative bridge maintenance project that will make repairs to 49 bridges along stretches of I-295 in
Camden, Gloucester and Salem counties.
To help extend the service life of these bridges, NJDOT will be performing different levels of bridge
maintenance work at each location including deck patching, curb repair, expansion joint reconstruction,
header reconstruction, sidewalk repair, deck crack repairs, cleaning of drainage systems, power washing,
and application of a corrosion inhibitor.
Work also will be performed below each structure, including repairs to abutment walls and piers, epoxy
waterproofing, and lubrication of bearings.
NJDOT’s contractor, Nagi Construction, is scheduled to begin work Tuesday, December 8, starting on
structures in Belmawr, with operations progressing southward. Some of the structures carry I-295 over
local roads, while some carry local roads over I-295. Some of this work will be happening near the area of
the Direct Connection Project but is not part of that project.
Work on Monday through Friday will be restricted to off-peak hours, mid-morning to mid-afternoon, or
overnight hours. Alternating traffic may be necessary for some local roads, maintaining one travel lane
with traffic controlled by flagmen.
All lanes will be maintained on I-295 during peak period commuting hours and on weekends. Work will
not take place on more than t wo bridges concurrently. Temporary lane closures may require flagging and
alternating traffic on local roads that provide only one travel lane in each direction.
The $3.7 million federally funded project is scheduled to be completed by December 2016.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are
encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information
