Long, Long Ago
This week we have visited Sheriff Hutton castle as part of our topic, ‘Long, Long Ago’. The
children have been thinking about how the castle (& village) may have looked long, long ago and
have begun to set up a role play area on the theme of castles..
Our Literacy topic is poetry and we have begun learning to recite poems (an objective which
will continue into next week) The children have added sound effects to a poem and performed
it for a recording….super stars in the making!
In Numeracy YR have been learning to add (‘put them together and count them all’ is our
chant) and are beginning to use the + sign to record their calculations. Y1 have been learning to
partition a 2 digit number saying how many tens and how many ones (we used to call it tens and
units!) For example; 20 and 3 is 23 or, 45 is 40 and 5 or 72, 7 tens are 70 and 2 more. Have a
go at partitioning numbers as you walk through the village (registration plates, doors etc).
HOMEWORK
Y1 – In preparation for ‘Big Write’ please talk with your child about castles.
What does a castle look like? Can they draw a castle and/or describe it to you?
Who lives in a castle and what do they do? Encourage the children to think about servants as
well as the more obvious characters.
Which person would you like to be?
What would your day be like?
Phonics
Reception have been learning the phonemes ‘
Year 1 have been learning apply the l/ll/le, j/dge, ch/tch rules to their spellings as well as
spell words containing all the digraphs/trigraphs taught so far.
Other
Our topic is Long, Long Ago and begins with a look at Sheriff Hutton and castles. The
children will be learning about our Royal family, leading to a topic about London to compare
our locality with another. Our next Literacy unit to be ‘traditional tales’ with a strong link
to the castle theme.
With this in mind, if anyone has any interesting resources they would like to bring in, we
would love to share them. Please make sure that all items are labelled and let us know if
they are resources to be looked at with an adult only or whether you are happy for the
children to explore them independently.
Many thanks for all your support.
