2016 GRAND CANYON BAHÁ’Í CONFERENCE FLOURISHING COMMUNITIES: ACT LOCALLY AFFECT GLOBALLY GCBC-004-2016-002-Program-V6.indd 1 12/12/16 6:49 PM “In an environment of love and trust born of common belief, practice, and mission, individuals of different races will have the intimate connection of heart and mind upon which mutual understanding and change depend.” Universal House of Justice to an individual believer, 10 April 10 2011 GCBC-004-2016-002-Program-V6.indd 2-3 12/12/16 6:49 PM 2016 GCBC Welcome Letter Dear friends: With great love and affection, the Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Phoenix welcomes you to the 32nd annual Grand Canyon Bahá'í Conference. We are grateful to those who have supported this conference through the years, and we welcome with enthusiasm those who are attending for the first time, particularly our dear friends of the Bahá'í Faith who share the same vision. We look forward to being of service to you over the next three days. Welcome to the 32nd Grand Canyon Bahá'í Conference. Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá'ís of Phoenix Let us begin our three-day journey of learning, consulting, and reflecting on building flourishing communities with these words from Bahá’u’lláh in mind: “It is incumbent upon every man of insight and understanding to strive to translate that which hath been written into reality and action…. That one indeed is a man who, today, dedicateth himself to the service of the entire human race. The Great Being saith: Blessed and happy is he that ariseth to promote the best interests of the peoples and kindreds of the earth.” The urgency to act is impelled by the world’s desperate conditions; each individual, however humble their share, can support and contribute to building flourishing communities, a better society, a unified and peaceful world, one that is advanced both spiritually and materially, one that embraces all, one that does not differentiate by color, class, wealth, gender, or age. May an atmosphere of love and fellowship, learning, and consulting in the days to follow, fill your hearts with love for humanity and aspirations of the possibilities before you in constructing a better world, and sustain you throughout the year that you may arise and rededicate your life to service to your fellow man. It is our ardent hope that you find the program enlightening and uplifting. The Assembly wishes to extend its heartfelt gratitude to the Conference Management Committee for its tireless efforts and dedication; we thank the Youth, the Junior Youth, the Children, the Registrars, the Security Task Forces, and the many volunteers who will spend countless hours in the next three days to be of service to us all. Without them this event would not be possible. We extend our gratitude to the presenters and entertainers for traveling across the country to be with us. Please accept our heartfelt gratitude for your loving support of this conference; we’re particularly grateful to all the friends of the Bahá'í Faith among us who are willing to learn and accompany us in building a better society. GCBC-004-2016-002-Program-V6.indd 4-5 12/12/16 6:49 PM Rules and Regulations Rules Regarding Children The health and safety of all conference participants is a primary concern of the Local Spiritual Assembly of the Bahá’ís of Phoenix, Arizona, and is the premise for the establishment of necessary rules and regulations outlined below. Please note, therefore in the interests of safety, exceptions to these rules will not be permitted. The Grand Canyon Bahá’í Conference Planning Committee very much appreciates your cooperation in honoring the wishes of our beloved institution, and abiding by the rules. As part of conference safety, we ask you not to leave your children under 12 unattended in the rooms or any where in the hotel. Please make sure that they are not playing on elevators, escalators or on stairs, as the hotel security or conference staff will detain unattended children (under 12 yrs) and the ones who are causing a disturbance in order to contact the parents. 1. We ask all attendees to adhere to the Bahá’í laws, including moderation of dress, and respectful conduct. 2. In order to facilitate participants getting to classes and programs on time, wristbands must be worn at all times. Please remember a wristband replacement costs $5.00 and Photo ID is required for a new one. 3. Sessions begin on time; so please come early so that you don’t miss a moment of the program. 4. Our conduct, including towards our volunteers, is a window to the Bahá’í Faith and is watched by hotel employees and other guests. Please make our actions such that all would be attracted to join in building Bahá'u'lláh's New New World Order. 5. The JW Marriott Hotel has been gracious in our requests for several years. We want to be welcomed by them in future years, and they have certain rules which we ask everyone to honor and obey. Please do not ask for exceptions as this could cause them not to renew our contract. a. No cooking in rooms, please. b. No pets in rooms except service animals. c. Please treat all employees with respect and courtesy d. Please treat all other guest as if they were guests in your home and please do not disturb them. Our behavior is a reflection of the Bahá’í community; please do not do anything that would create a negative impression. If you disobey these guidelines the hotel may ask you to leave the conference at once. 6. The City of Phoenix observes a “Youth” curfew, and violation of these ordinances can cause anyone under 18 to be arrested and placed in custody. Please note that if this occurs, parents must come to the Phoenix Police Department and deal with the problem. GCBC-004-2016-002-Program-V6.indd 6-7 Please note that children enrolled in the Children’s program must attend classes or remain in the parent’s care. No child under 12 may be left alone at any time. Children must have wristbands and name tags. Please remember a wristband replacement costs $5.00. In order to have a safe environment for children, authorized person(s) must sign the children in and out every day. The name of the Person(s) authorized to drop off or pick up children will be on Registration cards. Once a child is signed in, he/she will not be able to leave by themselves. Children’s classes will begin and end on time regardless of the start times and end times of the Main Sessions. Children must be picked up within 15 minutes of the posted end time of sessions/workshops, regardless of the time those sessions end. A charge of $2.00 per minute will be charged for each child left after 15 minutes of the end of the class. Please note the drop off and pick up times are published in the adult program. CHILDREN WHO MISBEHAVE WILL RECEIVE THREE VERBAL WARNINGS. IF THE BEHAVIOR CONTINUES, CONFERENCE SECURITY WILL BE NOTIFIED TO CONTACT THE CHILD’S PARENTS AND FURTHER APPROPRIATE ACTION WILL BE TAKEN. Any child signed in after the first 30 minutes will be placed in the daycare area. Children may not be signed in and out multiple times during a class period.
