AP Language and Composition Summer Reading List and Assignments
Selection: The Jungle by Upton Sinclair
Objective and Goal: To understand muckraking practices and goal oriented (slanted)
journalism and or books. Students will understand in their criticisms that some pieces of
journalism have ulterior motives. They will be able to identify these motives and
ultimately formulate their own opinions on these motives.
Paper 1 – Compare and contrast The Jungle with a current news article (an article from
the last few months). Decipher the goal of the author, cite examples of slanted
journalism (i.e. how can you tell the author’s position and what their goal is) and state
whether or not you feel like the slant is necessary. Length will be two pages.
Selection: The Scarlet Letter
Objective and Goal: To understand how the archetype* of the hero/anti-hero is
portrayed differently in different novels. Students will be able to understand the
differences between the two and comprehend how they are related and used in
characterization
Paper 2 – Keeping the archetype of the hero/anti-hero in mind, is Dimmesdale in the
context of the story, a hero or an anti-hero? Support your position with evidence from
the text. Length will be two pages.
Due date for both : the first day of school in August.
*Archetype = The original pattern or model from which all things of the
same kind are copied or on which they are based; a model or first
form; prototype. A universally accepted theme, symbol, or model in
literature.*
