The machine gun changed military strategy. 2. A group of well-placed gunners could stop the advance of a much larger force. 3. Combatant armies could no longer charge across open fields toward enemy lines. 1. The flamethrower changed the experience of war by improving an old weapon and making it easier to handle. 2. During World War I, one person could carry a Flamethrower and spray burning fuel on victims. 1. Artillery changed the experience of war by allowing troops to knock out enemy machine gun nests and lob poison gas shells at enemy trenches. 2. More than half of all battle casualties in World War I came from artillery. 1. The tank changed the experience of war by helping end the stalemate in the trenches. 2. Tanks could crush barbed wire, climb embankments 3. Tanks could cross ditches to attack enemy trenches, while protecting combatants from fire. 1. The trench system changed the experience of war by providing protection from heavy artillery and machineguns. 2. But it also led to disease and infections because of the horrible conditions. 1. Poison gas changed the experience of war by making it possible to kill or injure many people at once. 2. Chemicals like mustard gas caused lifelong injuries for many combatants. 3. Eventually, the gas mask was developed to help protect combatants from attacks. 1. The airplane changed the experience of war by taking war into the sky. 2. Pilots could scout enemy territory and drop bombs from above. 3. Anthony Fokker’s machine gun device made in-air combat between pilots possible. 1. The battleship changed the experience of war by making an old form of warfare more destructive but also safer for combatants. 2. Britain’s HMS Dreadnought was the first modern battleship. 3. It was larger, more powerfully armed, and more heavily armored than older ships. 1. The submarine changed naval warfare. 2. Because submarines moved beneath the water undetected, their torpedoes could not be stopped before reaching their targets. 23.4 Draw the location of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive is shown on page 300 of the student edition. Clearly label 1. The Allies launched the Meuse-Argonne Offensive in late September 1918 to break through the German line and reach the Sedan railroad—the main line of support and communication for the German troops. 2. More than 1 million American soldiers took part in the six weeks of fighting. The Allies won, and the war ended soon after, on November 11, 1918.
