A Piece to Remember from our Evening Program Show - Sunday, 6/30/2013 Open Mic Night Song Lyrics written and performed by 3 generations of the Bowen/Symmes/Goilas family To the tune of “Puff the Magic Dragon” Chorus: Magic Camp Ma-He-Tu, a lovely sight to see, nestled right along the shore of Lake Kanawauke Little Suzie Caper loved that peaceful spot, and dreamed all year of summers there and everything they taught. Each summer she would travel to camp beside the lake, swim tests given and arts & crafts to make (Chorus) Camping lives forever but not so little girls, college days and married ways, make way for other worlds. One grey day it happened, Suzie Caper came no more like so many other girls who came before. Remembering our Rich Past Nostalgia… I remember when… - There was actually a rowboat hike. Campers wore green & white to chapel on Sunday & staff wore all white. We had a kiln to make ceramics. The path to the waterfront had sand and logs for steps. Singing at meals was as natural as breathing. Prank playing was essential to the camp Ma-He-Tu experience. Rosie ruled the kitchen. We had cookouts, with our units, at the fire circles. We had a bat flying around the cave. I came to Ma-He-Tu for the very first time. We waited for the mail to come every Saturday. We had socials with Camp Trexler. There WAS a Camp Trexler. We slept in the Rec Hall during a hurricane. We were afraid of “Captain Peanut Butter”. Nursie inspected our cabins with a “White Glove”. We crossed Peanut Butter Hill backwards while holding our noses. I had my first regatta experience! The 1975 regatta was held in a storm. We had sleep-outs on the A-Field. We had picnics with Sloppy Joes and Sunshine Salad on the Meadow. There was no salad bar and we had to eat a “no thank you” serving at each meal and PBJ was the only alternative to lunch and dinner. - Lightning hit the basketball post while we were in the rec hall. - The nature tent was across from the flagpole. - There was a lantern Caper and your hands would turn black. Nostalgia Continued I remember when… - Emma wouldn’t let Kathy go to the water fountain without hanging on her leg. - We had a Tom Thumb Wedding. - Rosie would serve all the left-overs from the encampment and call it “International Night”. - We had American Chop Suey. - We had change day meatloaf. - We had CN Day. - We had no doors on the john stalls. - We had bathing in the lake with Prell and Ivory Soap. - We made our own ice cream sandwiches for Sunday lunch. - The johns were smelly.
