Denver’s powerhouse teams of the early 1960s under coach murray armstrong included the
likes of bill masterton, george kirkwood, george konik, marty howe and grant munro. in the
decade of the 1960s alone, the Pioneers won wcha playoff titles in 1960, 1961, 1963, 1964, 1966,
1968 and 1969.
Michigan Tech’s powerhouse teams of the 1960s included playoff titles in 1960, 1962, 1965, 1969
and 1970. Coached by John MacInnes, the Huskies are shown in here in 1960s Western Collegiate

S
ince it’s founding in 1951-52, winning national championships has been a hallmark of the
Western Collegiate Hockey Association and its member teams. Over the past 57 seasons,
teams representing the WCHA have earned a collegiate conference record 36 NCAA Men’s
Frozen Four titles and have also finished as the national runner-up on 27 other occasions. In
addition, at least one WCHA-member team has been in the NCAA Frozen four in 53 of the
league’s 57 seasons overall (did not qualify in 1993, 1998, 1999, 2009).
Included in the WCHA’s record 36 national championships are a run of five of the past eight
Frozen Four crowns, with those being won by won by Minnesota in St. Paul in 2002, by Minnesota in Buffalo in 2003, by Denver in Boston in 2004, by Denver in in Columbus in 2005, and
by Wisconsin in Milwaukee in 2006. North Dakota, meanwhile, has participated in three of the
past four Frozen Fours (2006, 2007, 2008).
