The God We Worship

WORSHIP SERIES
The God We Worship
Psalm 100 (NKJV)
A Song of Praise for the LORD’s Faithfulness to His People
A Psalm of Thanksgiving.
Make a joyful shout to the LORD, all you lands! 2 Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before His presence with
singing. 3 Know that the LORD, He is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and
the sheep of His pasture. 4 Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful to
Him, and bless His name. 5 For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting, And His truth endures to all generations.
Did you know? There is a star in our known universe called VY Canis Majoris and it is massive. This star is so big
you could fit 7 quadrillion earths inside of it.
Let’s get some perspective on this…
o The number 7 quadrillion looks like this….7,000,000,000,000,000 (that’s 15 zeros)
o VY Canis Majoris is 4,892 light years away
o If you traveled 100mph it would take you 70,000,000 years to get to VY Canis Majoris.
o A golf ball is a little more than 1 ½ inches in diameter.
o The state of Texas is 268,820 sq miles (696,241 sq km)
o If earth were the size of a golf ball, you could cover the entire state of Texas in golf balls…two feet deep.
What’s the point?
Our God is amazing. He is Creator over all. Here are some scriptures describing a little of what we’re talking about.
Isaiah 48:12-13
“Listen to Me, O Jacob, And Israel, My called: I am He, I am the First, I am also the Last. 13 Indeed My hand
has laid the foundation of the earth, And My right hand has stretched out the heavens; When I call to them,
They stand up together.
Psalm 147:4
He counts the number of the stars; He calls them all by name.
Jeremiah 31:35
Thus says the LORD, Who gives the sun for a light by day, The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a
light by night, Who disturbs the sea, And its waves roar (The LORD of hosts is His name):
Job 12:10
In whose hand is the life of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind?
Genesis 1:1-14 speak of the beginning of all creation. God spoke, “Let there be light.” He is light. He is
giving of Himself so that we can live.
Scientists will tell you that in all of the known universe earth is in a position of precision. There is no other location
in our galaxy or universe that is like where earth was placed in our milky way.
Our God is the Master Craftsman, the Master Creator. Our God is amazing.
Our Master Creator shows us His design even while we worship together

Researchers of the Sahlgrenska Academy at the University of Gothenburg in Sweden studied the heart rates
of high school choir members as they joined their voices. Their findings, published in Frontiers in
Neuroscience, confirm that choir music has calming effects on the heart — especially when sung in unison.
This actually may prove to help with healthy living.
Using pulse monitors attached to the singers' ears, the researchers measured the changes in the choir
members' heart rates as they navigated the intricate harmonies of a Swedish hymn. When the choir began
to sing, their heart rates slowed down.

From the musical expressions of our worship we flow in rhythm, tempo, synchronized words and melodies,
and even our outward expressions of worship.
We literally become one act of corporate worship to the Lord and He inhabits that worship. (Psalm 22:3)
Together we become more aware of God and who He is and what He is doing in our lives.
1 Corinthians 12:26-27 puts it this way…
26 And if one member suffers, all the members suffer with it; or if one member is honored, all the members rejoice
with it. 27 Now you are the body of Christ, and members individually.

This fact of unity can even be seen in nature as insects or birds swarm together in flight, deer and wolves
run in packs, or fish swim together in schools with precision.
Reason for 3 recent series
The vital importance of Word, Prayer and Worship…our purpose for these series is to ignite passion within
you to seek out and KNOW the Living God through the power, grace and blood of His Son Jesus Christ.
Loving, reading and knowing God’s Word helps us hear His voice, come to know Him more, and hear what
He has already said.
Growing in prayer causes us to become more transparent before the Lord; seeking Him in intercession for
others, putting priority in our relationship with God, and seeking to hear what else He has to say as we pursue
personal relationship with Him.
Expanding our passion for worship helps us become more aware of God.
This is actually the very job, the core responsibility of any God-anointed worship leader…to lead people
into encounter and deeper awareness of God, of who He is.
God’s Word, Prayer and Worship…
With the transforming power of the Holy Spirit, these 3 make us become more like Jesus.

Scripture over and over again proves this point: We become what we worship.
Greg Beale, author of We Become What We Worship, puts it this way: “What people revere, they
resemble, either for ruin or for restoration.”
If we worship the things of the world, we become worldly.
If we worship the One who made the world, we become godly (not God) but like Him; renewed,
transformed into His image once again.
Who is this God we worship?

Just the very words that describe His greatness and glory deserve the response of worship! This is the Victorious,
Overcoming, Everlasting, Ever-enduring, Faithful God and Father that we worship. And all other false gods must
bow. Every Kingdom is literally under the feet of His very throne.
Romans 14:11 says it best:
11 For it is written: “As I live, says the LORD, Every knee shall bow to Me, And every tongue shall confess to God.”
Here are some key things


Worshipping God without relationship and really knowing Him sums up to unacceptable rituals and
faithless religion.
To try and fulfill a list of requirements to prove yourself for God…ends up in vanity and disappointed hope.
But to grow in face to face relationship with God by resting in the grace already provided brings
satisfaction that is literally heaven on earth.
o Listen! RULES WITHOUT RELATIONSHIP SIMPLY LEADS TO REBELLION. (Soak that in for a minute.)
o The world scoffs and mocks the scripture because they see it outside the realm of relationship.
o The cross is foolishness to the world because their view is one outside of relationship.
o But we, The Church and Worshippers of God Almighty, know that His Word is HIMSELF and we
worship Him out of relationship. We honor and obey His Word because we know it is from
relationship and love that He speaks. Our obedience to His Word is, in fact, worship.
The ultimate response of worship is to come to the revelation of WHO WE ARE and WHO GOD IS.
o Meaning, when you realize your utter need for dependency upon God you come into agreement
with the very character of God. (The list of Books of the Bible and God’s character)
o He is Father, Judge, Holy, Advocate, Provider, Healer, Joy-giver, Redeemer, Savior, Rescuer…He is
forgiveness itself!
o This revelation of God moves us to give Him glory, honor, praise…WORSHIP!
MY MAIN RESPONSIBILITY, as well as every other worship leader, is to lead you into becoming more
AWARE OF GOD!
Knowing WHO GOD IS is so vitally important to growing in relationship with God. You can give God worship
without knowing Him but you cannot grow in relationship without knowing Him. In other words, you have
to KNOW God before you can really WORSHIP God.
Knowing WHO YOU ARE is also very important to a life of worship.
o Why? Because knowing who you are WITH and WITHOUT Jesus sums it all up…




 WITH Jesus you are loved, accepted, transformed and saved
 WITHOUT Jesus you are lost, lonely, rejected, in despair and destined for hell
Revealed in the confession of our great need for God is the acknowledgement and agreement we have
with His very nature and character.
o You confess that you are a sinner and utterly lost without Him…you’re confession comes into
agreement that He is Savior, Redeemer, Messiah, and Restorer
o You confess that your body needs deliverance from illness, cancer and disease…you’re confession
comes into agreement that He is Healer, Faithful Father who gives good gifts, and Provider
o You confess that you can’t keep your promises, foolish in your ways, a liar, thief and
idolater…you’re confession comes into agreement that He is ALWAYS FAITHFUL.
o Here is one of the most powerful disciplines of worship that I can give you to bring true stability in
your relationship with the Lord.
 Psalm 46:10, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be
exalted in the earth!”
 Before you jump into all kinds of prayers, supplications, petitions, huge expressions of
worship work on being still before Him; meditating on His Truth, Who He is, who you are in
Him, who you used to be without Him…rest in His grace and respond with worship from
that place of stability.
I can teach you all kinds of outward responses and expressions to worshipping God but it will only be
shallow, vain emotionalism in your worship until you come to grips with WHO GOD IS and WHO YOU ARE.
We could teach on worship for decades and never talk about it enough. But in all of that teaching, if you
haven’t confessed your great need for God, in turn agreeing with God and His Word that He is forever true
and faithful, your worship is simply syllables and tempos that have no purpose and eternal impact.
Here is a great way to start worshipping if you’ve never taken the step in the right direction before.
o Jesus Christ said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father
except through Me.”
o Your ultimate response to worship should always begin with your confession of Jesus Christ being
the Way, Truth and Life.
o From every morning when you wake to every time you leave work to drive home, from every small
group gathering to attend to every time you step into a place of worship to corporately exalt the
King…remember WHO HE IS and WHO YOU ARE.
