1. An organism is a living thing. 2. Carbon Dioxide is a gas in the atmosphere that plants use during photosynthesis. Humans give plants carbon dioxide and plants give us oxygen. 3. Photosynthesis is the process in which plants use the sun’s energy to make food. They need water, sunlight and carbon dioxide to go through this process. 4. A producer is an organism that makes its own food. Plants are producers. 5. Chlorophyll is the green substance in plants that captures/absorbs the sun’s energy. 6. When something is resting or inactive we call it dormant. 7. When a seed begins to develop or grow it is called germination. 8. Roots are one of the first structures to grow. They grow downward to hold the plant to the ground and get nutrients. 9. The part of the plant that grows up from the ground and supports the rest of the plant is the stem. 10. Leaves are the flat usually green parts of the plant that grow from the stem or up from the roots. Leaves are the “food factories” of the plant because they make the food the plant needs. 11. Adapt - change. 12. Reproduce means to make more of the same kind of organism as the adult. 13. Inherited Traits are the characteristics passed down from parent to offspring. 14. Learned Behaviors are behaviors that are learned. 15. Offspring - children. 16. Perish – die 17. Instincts are behaviors that are inherited. 18. Carnivores are animals that eat other animals. (meat eaters) 19. Food Webs are groups of overlapping food chains. 20. A food chain is the path of energy from the sun to plants to animals. 21. Prey are animals that are hunted by predators. 22. Predators are animals that hunt other animals for food. 23. Decomposers are organisms that break down dead plants and animals. 24. A niche is an organism’s role or job in an ecosystem. 25. Omnivores are animals that eat both plants and animals. 26. Herbivores are animals that eat only plants. 27. Consumers are animals that eat other organisms. 28. Habitat is the place where an animal lives.
