Zumba at NHV and a Ladies Night planned
Merry Christmas
NHV’s activities, resident homes and learning center all
contribute to our NHV mission: giving loving care and
protection to the lives entrusted to us while guiding them to
become creative, self-sufficient and independent.
Yes it is time to Zumba with residents and staff! Our very own
NHV nurse Gladys, in yellow, is busting a move that is
carrying all the way down the line with JoAnn, Paul and Tim.

The Recreation Department has more fun planned for the ladies
of NHV, a Ladies Night. Can’t wait to see the pictures on that
one!
Our NHV programs are regularly revised or expanded to
ensure our residents receive care that promotes growth of the
whole person. If you have thoughts or wishes about special
goals for your loved one, please contact Donna Salak, QIDP at

Having a lot fun on House One
In November we had a dinner outing to Pizza Hut in the beginning of the month. In the middle of the month we had a dessert
outing at Sonic where everybody enjoyed a milkshake. Then we had our wonderful feast on Thanksgiving. At the end of the
month we all celebrated Lori’s birthday with a special dinner and some yummy birthday cake and ice cream followed by Lori
opening her presents. Also, Lori even had a special visit from her sister for her birthday. In December we were busy, busy, busy
on the house. We had a dinner outing to KFC. We had lots of fun preparing for our Christmas play “The Christmas Carol”, which
turned out awesome. We went sightseeing to see all the pretty Christmas lights in the neighborhood. We enjoyed Christmas
caroling at all of the houses on campus. Then we had our Family Christmas Party where we were able to enjoy a delicious meal
with our loved ones. On Christmas morning we opened our presents. Jane was so excited when she saw her new piano. Scott
loved his new soft Tonka truck. Adam enjoyed hearing his records on his new record player. Toni sang along with the Christmas
carols on her new stereo. Sharon loves playing with her new talking Dora doll. Lori loves all of her pretty new outfits, Michael is
happy to have his new stereo and Phillip likes his new jacket.
Staying busy on House Two
November was a busy month for our house. We went to Sonny's in Inverness for the first time. Everyone really enjoyed the food
and the waitress was very nice and helpful. Everyone seemed to pick pulled chicken or pork, but Tommy wanted to stand out and
had fish. Everyone ate every last little bit on their plates. To satisfy November's sweet tooth we took a trip over to McDonald's in
Inverness for ice cream cones and shakes. With the cooler weather, we skipped the picnic that month and took a nice drive over to
Fort Island Trail to look at nature. Everyone got to do something special for Thanksgiving - Linda went to her brother’s house
with her mom; Jimmy, Wayne W. and Amy all went with Jana back to her house. Wayne C. went home with his mother, Tommy
went home with his parents. Dean went out to supper with his father to Joe's Family Restaurant and John went home with his
parents as well. The busyness did not stop in November, but kept moving right on in to December. In December we celebrated
Dean's 48th Birthday! Dean chose Setera to take him out for his special birthday dinner at Apple Bee's. Dean's favorite present
was a big art kit with a stand-up easel. Everyone was in the mood for Italian in December, so we trekked over to Pizza Hut in
Crystal River and got a bunch of pizzas to share. Even though December brought some cooler days and nights that did not deter
us from heading over to Wendy's in Inverness for some Frosty's. We also took a nice drive a couple days before Christmas to see
all the Christmas lights in Beverly Hills and Pine Ridge. Everyone got a chance to see some family around the holiday as well Dean went to visit his dad and brother, Linda went to see her mother and brother, Tommy took a special trip to Chicago with his
mom and dad for a family wedding (I believe). Wayne C. visited his mother, Wayne W. and Jimmy had dinner with Jana, and
Amy's mother, father and brother made a surprise visit a few days after Christmas.
Three times the fun this holiday season on House
Three
th
Our house started off with a birthday party for Kim. She celebrated her 45 birthday. Then off to Ruby Tuesday’s for dinner. We
had a great time trying out new foods and the salad bar was fantastic. The Dragon Boat Parade was our next destination. We went
to Hernando Beach where they raced boats decorated like dragons and had a big festival. We danced to music and had a picnic
under the pavilion. We then cooled our jets at Magic Twist Ice Cream. No mercy there. The ice cream was amazing. Gobble,
gobble, turkey day was upon us. After filling our bellies with a fantastic lunch that our Dietary Department provided us, our house
digested our meal with Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving movie and started decorating for Christmas. December rolled in and the
weather began to get cold. We warmed up with some hot chocolate and began our Christmas lists. Hungry after decorating the
tree we took off to Sonny’s for some BBQ. Yum! Yum! Then we all got dressed up for the Christmas Party. Thank you to the
Greiner’s, we had a great time. Santa was fantastic. The festivities were not over yet. Our house then took a ride sightseeing.
We drove around Beverly Hills and Inverness checking out all the Christmas lights while singing Christmas carols. Now it was
time for Santa. All snuggled in bed with visions of sugar plums dancing in our heads. It was time, “Santa come”. The residents
enjoyed opening presents and the staff was delighted to see all their happy faces. A day to remember. We closed the year by
enjoying frozen yogurt on the deck at Flip Flop Yogurt Shop, reminiscing about the year and making new horizons.

Doing well on House Four
The last two months have brought sorrow and joy. One of our residents left New Horizons and we had to say goodbye but with
this brought a shining light to our house named Cassie. She is a welcome addition. With a gobble, gobble and Hoo, Hoo
throughout November and December as we celebrated with dances and great food. Our house had fun preparing for Christmas.
Kirsten was such a big help setting up our blow up light displays. Walter and Larry Joe loved going outside at night to look at our
outside displays. Amy, Cassie and Debbie helped staff trim the tree. All the residents enjoyed making some Thanksgiving and
Christmas decorations. We went to Rustic Ranch and Chili’s for our dinner outings and boy was that fun! Trinh and Suzanne
enjoyed going out on their birthday dinner outings together and had a wonderful time. Christmas morning was quiet because four
residents had an opportunity to visit with their families. Those who stayed home opened their gifts and were excited with
everything they received from Santa. Sad to see the holidays gone but looking forward to a New Year. Happy New Year to all of
you!
Celebrating on House Five
The holiday season could not have been better! We had a great time going to the Ale House in Crystal River where Tony and
Casey could not believe the sunset. Regardless of how cold the weather got these guys still wanted ice cream at the local Dairy
Queen, so of course we went and had an amazing time. To no one’s surprise the meal the whole house was waiting for was turkey
day!! We went over to the Café and enjoyed a marvelous feast thanks to our dedicated Dietary staff. Not long after our over the
top extravagant food throughout the month, December came and so did a new exercise activity for the whole Village. We began
to bike and walk as a point to get ourselves out there more and be active. And it was not long before we started singing Christmas
tunes to every door we could. Then it got us thinking how much we need to get out there and check out the Christmas lights and
my-oh-my did we see some spectacular homes! The following weeks we went to scope out some of the best Chinese food in town
at Mr. King’s where we all ate till it got late. With Christmas only around the corner now we happened upon another place that
made us happy and that’s McDonalds for some sugary delectable treats and of course we had to save some for Santa! So
Shantalaya and the gang went to work to make some cookies for Santa to eat when he arrived at our house. Magically over night
the cookies were swapped for presents! We had a nice holiday dinner at the Café before we said goodbye to the holiday season.
Everyone take care and we will see you all again in the next newsletter.
Happy holidays from House Six
It was a pretty enticing few months as we celebrated Thanksgiving. Many of us spent time with our families while others enjoyed
the time with their staff family. Two of our residents, Denise and Tim received their medals for Special Olympics Golf and
Bowling. They worked hard. Gail celebrated his 70th birthday in the month of November. We kicked off his party in Ninja Turtle
style. PMc has been enjoying the waves; he got a medal for paddle boarding in Special Olympics. Everyone enjoyed our meal at
Angelottis, as some had pizza and some had spaghetti. They love that restaurant. We switched it up this month and had dessert at
Crystal River Dockside, where we have never been before. It is near the water but it was dark we had to sit inside. Some enjoyed
hot cocoa as well. As Christmas was getting closer we had an early night adventure looking at Christmas lights. We ended the
old year as we were getting into the new one. Happy New Year from our home to yours!
Recreation highlights
Happy New Year from the Recreation Department!! We started the Halloween season with a costume party at the Bushnell
V.F.W.; Amy L., Gail, Pat, Dean and Linda had a great time. Dean won first place in the costume contest!! We followed that
with the Scare Crow Festival in Crystal River. The residents, 18 in all, played games and won prizes. It was a blast. The
Halloween holiday ended with our haunted house and dance. We had well over 60 people including the guests from the
community. The costumes were amazing. The staff did a great job all around for this event. Thank you. In November we took
18 residents to the rodeo. We all ate dinner, desserts and brought home souvenirs. In December we went to a Christmas play
followed by the Crystal River Parade the following night. Both outings were a success. The residents had nothing but smiles
during the parade. On Saturday, December 13th we put together a Scavenger Hunt for the residents which went over very well.
Each resident received a certificate for their participation. The staff did a great job. We could not have pulled this off without a
team effort!! We ended the holiday season with the Resident and Family Christmas Party and our annual New Year’s Eve dance
and dinner. The Recreation Department is looking forward to another exciting year.
Special Olympics
It is basketball season at Special Olympics. We are in Area 6 which includes Citrus, Hernando, Pinellas, Pasco and Marion
counties. Citrus County Olympians are Area 6 Champions for the fifth year in a row! They won by one point in overtime over
our good friends in Hernando County. We will again defend our State Championship status for the 5th time this year at a new
venue at Howie in the Hills on February 20th and 21st. Track and field will begin on January 31st from 9 am until 11:00.
February the Kings and Queen of Hearts Ball will be held at NHLC Café on February 14th from 7 until 8:30. This is a formal
affair. Ken Roix will be our DJ. Come join us!

Christmas play, party and New Year’s!
Reported by Dean
Christmas Play
Newsflash, I enjoyed doing my part in the Christmas Carol play today at the ATF and I hope everyone enjoyed it as well, the
Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I am going to tell you quite a bit about the story. A long time ago before electricity in the
town of London there was a mean old man named Jacob Marley. After he died Ebenezer Scrooge became a mean man after his
girlfriend broke up with him and he became mean to Bob Cratchet and told him to stop using his wood for the fireplace but Bob
said but this is Christmas uncle but in the future I think you should wear warmer gloves. Today I played the part of Scrooge, and
Tony, Linda and all the others at the ATF were in the production play of the Christmas Carol. I did both the acting and the singing
of the play and I hope everyone enjoys the film and the pictures when they come out. I hope all the BPS’s and UC’s enjoyed
watching the play too. Miss Agnes worked really hard teaching us all our lines and scenes, her husband filmed us today and her
daughter Dominique played a ghost alongside Bruce and Tim played Jacob Malley. James and Paul were in the play as well.
Linda was Mrs. Cratchet and said God bless us everyone. I also did his role today, the part of Scrooge, saying Stop now before I
call the police and you spend the night in jail and I sang. Long after that I wasn't so grumpy in the role as Scrooge, when I finally
woke up it was Christmas and I didn't miss it! Ebenezer Scrooge became a better man and a better person. He wasn't mean at all
in the town of London. I hope everyone enjoys this newsletter.
Christmas Party
It's me Dean from House 2! We had a really nice time at the Christmas Party. We all really enjoyed the meal and seeing Santa
Claus. I really liked the dessert we ate. Shortly after that, we all got to open our gifts from jolly St. Nick. After the luncheon,
everyone went their separate ways and took off with their families. I got to go home with my dad and brother and we had a lovely
meal for Christmas; ham and mashed potatoes. I got back in enough time for the New Year's Eve party and I dressed up kind of
like Michael Jackson. We had chicken and rice and a delicious brownie and ice cream for dessert. I entertained everyone with my
singing and counting down the New Year! We got a chance to do a lot of dancing, too. We all had a great time.

Learning and growing at the ATF
Having Fun in Classroom 1
November was a fun month for us; we learned many things about Pilgrims, Indians and how they both helped each other. We also
learned how different countries celebrated Thanksgiving and how different the traditions are. We went to Kings Bay and had a
great picnic. We also had a wonderful Thanksgiving celebration in our Café. Our ATF was also putting together a play for
December and we practiced every day and had lots of fun. December was a very exciting month. We learned how Christmas
started and why we put gifts under the tree. We put together a fun play for everyone at New Horizons Village and everyone loved
it. We got to see Santa and get gifts. We had a great Christmas celebration, the food was so good and the cake was beautiful. The
best part of all was spending Christmas with our families and friends.

Staying busy in Classroom 2
We have had so much fun going on picnics in which we got to learn about nature and feeding the birds. The class made many
crafts to get ready for the holidays and patiently awaiting Santa’s arrival. We had a great time practicing for the Christmas play
and an even better time performing. Our class would like to wish everyone a safe and Happy New Year!
Festive in Classroom 3
We got festive in November and December! November was filled with birthdays; Leslie, Trinh and Gail. We learned about the
pilgrims and the Native Americans that showed them how to grow their own food. The residents enjoyed hearing about the foods
at the first Thanksgiving and how it included fish. When December came we began practicing for our holiday play. They were so
excited to show off their talents and perform for their families and friends! In class we learned the history of “the lighting of the
tree” in Rockefeller Center and then why we send out fruit cakes during Christmas and how it is made. As always Christmas is
FUN in our class and we look forward to a Happy New Year!
Hello from Workshop
Happy New Year! In the month of November we learned about the autumn season and Thanksgiving. It was like a mini history
lesson. We studied about the early settlers, pilgrims and Indians. We also went over traditional foods for Thanksgiving around
the world. In the month of December we began learning about ways to keep our bodies healthy; everything from what foods to
eat, what exercise you need and how to prevent disease and illness. We also started crafts to make the ATF look festive for the
holiday season. We practiced hard for our Christmas skit and it really paid off. Everyone really enjoyed the ATF’s version of “A
Christmas Carol”. We enjoyed learning about Christmas traditions, food, parties and much more around the world. We hope you
all had a very blessed Thanksgiving and a merry Christmas.
Safety Corner –
New Year over-analysis
Self-reflection at this time of year can make us all focus on what's wrong with our life, leading us to set unrealistic goals to
become our 'ideal' person.
Small wonder, then, that a third of us lose our resolve to keep our resolutions within a week.
How to turn it around
Although self-improvement is important, going overboard can backfire.
To lift your morale and gain perspective, life coach Fiona Harrold suggests making a list of everything that is already great with
your life, taking stock of all that you feel grateful for right now.
'It's healthy to feel motivated to make changes at the beginning of a New Year,' says Fiona, 'but avoid the mistake of only focusing
on what's missing in your life.
'Instead, focus on the changes you want to bring about from a balanced and optimistic perspective.
'As for mistakes – who hasn't made a few? The smart thing to do is to grasp the lesson thoroughly and move on as a wiser person.'
Balance your drive for change with an appreciation of the here-and-now and your sense of disillusionment will go.
