It may come as a surprise but the answer is: Christmas. Christmas is when we celebrate that God the Father gives his Son, baby Jesus. We celebrate the light that was lit in the darkness with a glance to the first light that was lit, on the first day of creation, when God said, ‘Let there be light!’ What is the meaning of creation? On the first page of the Bible, it is said that, ‘in the beginning, God created heaven and earth’. The statement is most often taken to mean that, in the beginning, there was nothing. God created everything out of nothing. That is a hard idea to grasp. Things do not normally come into existence out of nothing. But the world did, we are told. It came from nothing. What may be even harder to get our head around is that it means that the world has no justification. Whenever I hear this expression – ‘God created everything out of nothing’ – I am reminded of the art critic who said that a piece of art is like the world. Neither can have any justification. Nor do they need any. They are and that is enough. To say that God created everything out of nothing, is to say that when God created the world, he created a piece of art. He was an artist. He needed no reason to create the world. The world is its own reason. The child in the manger is a great symbol of that. The child also has no justification. Of course, we may say we choose to have a child because we do not want to be lonely in our old age. Yet that is hardly reason enough. The child, in a very important way, is – must be – its own end. It is not there to fulfil our purposes, whatever they may be. And when the child is born, we have to increasingly learn to say, ‘Let it be!’ just as God did when he created the world. That is, to step aside so that something new can take its beginning, something genuinely new. That is what the child in the manger has come to symbolize to me: a new beginning, similar to the first beginning, when the world was first created. What will baby Jesus grow up to be? We know because we know the story. Mary and Joseph did not know. Perhaps God also did not know. Other than the fact that a new life had taken its beginning. And that it would have no justification other than in its own unfolding. Christmas, then, is the feast for God the Father. God the Creator. God the Artist. It is the feast where we celebrate creation: the light, the world, the children – the new that emerges. Merry Christmas! Pastor Kenneth ON DECEMBER 18th AFTER THE SERVICE: GLØGG AND KLEJNER I PRÆSTEGARDEN After the service on the fourth Sunday in advent, just before Christmas, we would like to invite the congregation over for gløgg and klejner, as a way of wishing you all Merry Christmas. Kenneth and Mette 7 OPERA: “CARMEN - LIKE YOU HAVE NEVER SEEN IT BEFORE” Why is Opera, the most complex, extravagant and complete of all the arts, growing so fast in popularity? Perhaps because, for many, it tends to be: “A late onset disease”. Appreciating Opera (or any great work of art) needs time, work, and exposure, and a little gentle guidance. Iain Scott will help us explore the essential ingredients that lead to a deeper appreciation of this most rewarding of all art forms. You may be surprised – and possibly even converted! SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12th at 12:30pm in the Royal Hall we feature: “Carmen like you have never seen it before!” Admission is $20, which includes a delicious lunch PS: It would be helpful if you could please call or e-mail John if you are planning on participating John Uffe [email protected] 416-424-1370 Iain Scott has worked for 30 years with Shell, Deloitte, and Mercer Actuaries, and founded his own company in 2002 to develop opera appreciation courses, lead opera tours, and offer opera guides. For more information, please see: http://www.opera-is.com/index.cfm?pagepath=About_Iain&id=44573 CHURCH CAFÉ How blessed we are to be able to meet nearly every Tuesday in our newly renovated hall. We have a wonderful afternoon with friends sharing news, lunch, songs and a game of cards. If you want to experience Danish hygge and have some time on Tuesdays do join us. You will be most welcome. All friends in the Church Café are wished a festive Christmas season. Thank you for your support through 2016. Glædelig Jul and a happy, healthy New Year to all! Liselotte, Doreen and Avril CHRISTMAS Q & A Q: How do you know Santa has to be a man? I’m sure it’s something you’ve all thought about, since you also came to this country, and at some point, found yourself embracing new traditions. For me, the answer is three years. This year was the fourth time we celebrated Thanksgiving, and for the first time it felt as important a tradition as Christmas and Easter. Of course, we celebrated with turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce, gravy and stuffing. Of course, we had pie for dessert. And what do you know, as I write this, apple sauce is cooking on the stove. It’s for the Thanksgiving Dinner in the church, another new tradition we look forward to every year. Tradition is important, now more than ever. When you live in a world that is constantly changing, special occasions where we stop the rush toward new experiences, where we remember and celebrate the roots, are essential. At least, it is very important to Kenneth and I. Maybe because we both feel that this fantastic journey, we’re on, is ever changing. Not one year has looked like the one before. Our first winter, we had an ice storm for Christmas and last year we had eighteen degrees on Christmas eve. In 2015, summer started mid May, this year we had snow on May fifteenth. Last year, people complained we hadn’t had a real summer. This year, we were above thirty degrees thirty-eight times. It has been wonderful to expe- CORNER rience it all. It is not only the weather that has been changing for us these past years. Experiencing Canada and Toronto in particular, has also changed. The first year we saw all the sights. Maybe you remember how I told you that I saw Niagara Falls six times during the first year? Last year we were fortunate enough to see some of Vancouver and Quebec on some great holidays. This year, we’ve experienced a new Toronto seen from toddler height. We’ve been to all playgrounds in the area, all the library play corners, your amazing zoo, the Islands, Canada’s Wonderland. We’ve explored sights that you can drive to during a nap (one and a half hour). We’ve seen St. Marieamong-the-Hurons, Wasaga Beach, The Midlands, St. Jacob’s Market and beautiful little Elora. Just to mention a few. It is different from the Toronto and Ontario we knew before we had a toddler, but it is just as charming and welcoming. Church service has also been very different from the peaceful, thought provoking experience it used to be. Some of you might have noticed Winnie and I. It’s difficult to be twenty-month-old and be still for almost an hour. Especially, when you can see your dad at the other end of the room, and you can’t go to him. Maybe you’ve noticed a new voice singing along to the hymns? Winnie loves to sing, though she’s not always in tune. Practicing going to church is like all other practice; it takes time and effort. 10 I appreciate your understanding through this process. I hope to see you in church for the Bazaar on November 19th. Kenneth, Winnie and I will in principle be at the “Plates booth” as always, but I expect Kenneth and I will be doing more running around than usual, now we have a toddler in tow (or speeding away). I also look forward to seeing you again for Lucia where all the children gather and sing our favorite Christmas songs. We’re fortunate enough to have guests from Denmark for Christmas this year, and I can’t wait to celebrate the service with them and you and your family. Hopefully, we’ll meet again for the Christmas play. Winnie is all ready to be a singing angel again (although a little devil might have been more appropriate). Yes, I look very much forward to the holiday season. I always do, but this year I do even more, because as with everything else these past three years, I know the old traditions will be a whole new experience. Kenneth, Winnie and I would like to wish all of you a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year! Kenneth, Winnie and Mette NATIVITY PLAY AND CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Nativity Play and Children’s Christmas Party is on Monday December 26th at 10:30am. This is our traditional Christmas celebration for children of all ages – a special day for the whole family. Perhaps you or your children or grandchildren would like to be in the play – we are in need of actors of all ages. After the play we all go downstairs to dance around the Christmas tree (Danish style) and sing songs and play games. And if you have been good this year - who knows who else might join us??? There will be coffee, juice, and cookies served. We ask that parents bring in any cakes, cookies, and other edible goodies that they may have left over after Christmas. All are welcome to be part of this enjoyable family affair. CHOIR UPDATE The choir is meeting on some Tuesday evenings during the year. Gathering for a good social time, singing exercises, some stretches, rounds, hymns and songs in harmony. If you would like to join, to know more or just try it out, feel welcome! Please contact Rikke: [email protected] or 647-887-9434 11 FROM THE PRESIDENT We’ve had a nice early fall so far. Enjoy the sunshine and good weather as much as you can – we all know what is just down the road. By now many of you have had a chance to observe and enjoy the results of the big renovation project. I have only heard oohs and ahs from almost everyone I’ve spoken to. The Royal Hall and vestibule, the washrooms (make sure you enter the correct one!!!), and the Kai Munk room have all been fully refurbished and look brand new. And once the exterior upgrades are complete – new front steps and porch (with no leaks!!!), and new doors and railings – we will have a church that is physically as well as spiritually welcoming. I’m quite sure you will be pleased with the results. There are still minor deficiencies that will be dealt with in the next few weeks, but you should plan a visit soon and see what you think. We are not finished with the planned upgrade yet. New windows all around and AC in the sanctuary are still in the remaining capital budget. Although we dealt with areas that most needed attention, there are still many other areas that could also use an upgrade. There is a lot of wear and tear in a building that is 50 years old. We still need new carpeting in the sanctuary, a general touch up in the library and behind the stage, a fresh coat of paint on the outside, just to name a few. However, as we recently found out, the cost of upgrades is much more than what you expect. With that in mind we are planning events in the near future to raise funds for these new projects. We have had success with this format in the past, and hope you will support us once again to achieve these goals. Remember – this is your church and activity center. We try our best to provide a variety of events that not only meet your needs, but will also provide a source of funds for the church. Now that we are able to fully use the “new” church again, all our usual events and activity groups are once more in full swing. Despite the delayed start to the fall season, we managed to kick October off in good style. Opera 101 with Iain Scott – an introduction to the how and what and why of opera - was well received. Keep your eyes open for part 2 on November 12th when Bizet’s Carmen will be discussed. The Welcome Back fest was appropriately named as we initiated the “new” Royal Hall that day. A lovely Music Sunday with harpists followed by a festive lunch and storytelling kept most of us entertained. The Thanksgiving Dinner guests were also treated to great food, excellent service, and a variety of enjoyable entertainment. A wonderful evening was had by all, and special thanks go to those who helped make it so – the kitchen and serving staff, the musicians and folk dancers, decorators and receptionists, etc. We expect that the Esbjerg Boys Choir visit will look and “sound” amazing. Their participation in the service with mini-concert to follow will be something quite special. We will wrap up October with a Halloween Family service. This is a special day for little princesses and pirates and super heroes. 12 Please bring as many of them as you can find. In November we are into All Saints’ Day – and the congregation’s 59th birthday. And before you know it the Fall/Christmas Bazaar is in our laps. Our bazaars are quite popular, but please promote as much as you can – it is a much needed fund raiser for the church. We will also have the lottery draw that day. Tickets have already been sent out with self-addressed and stamped envelopes included, so it couldn’t be easier for you to buy some tickets. Your support is needed and appreciated. Julehygge will be on Saturday November 26th – we hope you will join us. December is always a special month with a lot of activity. The Lucia Pageant on December 4th will continue to embrace the spirit of the season. And before you know it the Christmas services will be here. It will be a busy time with services on December 24th (Danish and English as usual) and December 25th, and the Nativity Play and Children’s Christmas Party on December 26th. We will close the festive season with a New Year’s service on January 1st. With so much going on – please check the almanac or website for dates and times. Many of you have returned your 2017 membership renewals – some with additional donations added. All amounts whether large or small are always very much appreciated. It is important to have many “voting” members registered, so please fill out the form and send in the $15 per adult if you have not yet done so. Remember, we are fully self funding and receive no funds from Denmark. As always we encourage you to participate in our activities. All are welcome to share in the benefits of our wonderful church. We look forward to see you there. Best wishes for a happy and safe Christmas season to everyone. Sune Overgaard Nativity Play 2015 Please join us on stage this year - see pg. 6 13 THE FOLK DANCERS ARE AT IT AGAIN!! A great summer is behind us with lots of folk dancing, including at the Redpath Waterfront Festival Toronto for the visit of the Norwegian Viking ship Draken Harald Harfagre and with the Icelandic Dance Group “Sporið”, visiting Toronto in early October. This year we are starting the season later than usual but it is never too late to start an indoor activity involving good fun, exercise and music. You will have a chance to refresh and learn new steps to old and new traditional Danish music. We would enjoy having you join us in lots of old and new dances, "kvadriller", 2, 3 and 4-ture and many others. We dance until December, ending the season with our Christmas party on December 9th. Remember we meet at the Church on Fridays from September through May, (look for the dates in the almanac or on the church website www.dlctoronto.on.ca) from 7:30pm to 10 pm (with a coffee break). Beginners are always welcome; all you have to do is show up. See you downstairs, in the Royal Hall for our next dance nights. (A word of advice; Smooth-textured leather-soled shoes will reduce the strain on knees and ankles) The Folk Dancers website: www.danishfolkdancers.ca / email: [email protected] GOLDEN AGE CLUB It was nice to see so many back for the GAC luncheon. Johannes is busy planning events for the coming months, if you have any suggestions please speak to him. There is only one meeting in November due to the bazaar. Have a safe fall and a great Christmas. Lilly From Golden Age Club October Fest 14 MUSIC IN CHURCH Sunday November 6th - our All Saints Service is a music Sunday. I've invited saxophonist Emily Steinwall to play with me on the organ and piano. She performed for us recently at the Thanksgiving Dinner, together with the bass player Hayden Farrar, and captured all of us with her smooth jazz tunes. For All Saints the music will be more serene and meditative - in honor of the ones who past away. Emily Steinwall is a very active musician in the Toronto jazz community and often performs her own compositions with her band Emily Steinwall Group. You can read more about her and her music here: www.emilysteinwall.com With the month of December comes the month of Lucia, the Nine Readings, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Christmas Play - which all asks for more festive music and more uplifting songs - How wonderful!! I am very happy to announce that we will have Trumpeter Lina Allemano playing for us on Christmas Eve/ Juleaften, which will be our Music Saturday of December. Lina played at church last Christmas, and lifted the whole service up to what you only expect for a real Christmas. I am looking forward to it. Lina is a very busy musician often touring North America and recently Europe. She played a couple of concerts in Copenhagen as well. Read more about Lina and her music here: www.linaallemano.com Another gifted musician has agreed to play for us on the New Year’s Service, Sunday January 1st 2017. The violinist Sarah Wiebe will accompany me on the piano to greet the New Year of 2017 welcome. Most of you will know her, as she has played for us a couple of times before. We will play music from the baroque and classical eras. Rikke From Golden Age Club October Fest 15 JULEHYGGE AND A CHRISTMAS MOVIE Saturday November 26th at 2:00pm Please join us for this afternoon of “julehygge”. We will start with a cup of gløgg with æbleskiver and cookies, while we make hearts, stars, kravlenisser and more to take home. Afterwards we will watch the good old Christmas movie: Nøddebo Præstegård. Yes, we have all watched it at least 5 times before, but it is still the one which will put us all in “julestemning”! Looking forward to seeing you there - Everybody is welcome! Lukasevangeliet, kapitel 2, vers 1-20 17 GREETINGS FROM SUNSET VILLA We have said good-bye to summer which was truly a warm one enjoyed by all at Sunset Villa, especially the campers. We have had some great dinners and entertainment nights this past summer. We are preparing to hook-up 6 new campsites in November and they will be ready to lease out for the 2017 season. We are in the process of replacing all the windows in the newer apartments. With all these major expenses, we are looking for ways to raise funds, as the majority of our income comes from the membership, campers and tenants, and we do not want to increase these expenses to our members if we do not have to. We presently have 420 members and we are always looking for more people to get involved in this little piece of Danish Culture here in Ontario. We have the Ladies Annual Christmas Bazaar coming up on November 26th and 27th. Come out and see what they have to offer. While you are here, stay for a meal at The Danish Place Restaurant. When January arrives, it gets pretty quiet at Sunset Villa as the Restaurant will be closed, the Geritol Gang does not meet on Fridays, the campground was closed on November 6th for the 2016 season, and some of the tenants go south or just hibernate in their comfortable apartments. All the best to you for the holiday season and throughout the winter months. Arlene Lange for Sunset Villa Association AN UPDATE FROM GRIMSBY We have some exciting events coming up at the Danish Church in Grimsby! On Sunday December 11th at 2:00pm we have our annual Lucia Pageant and Christmas party. Come dance around the Christmas tree, and have a visit with Mr. & Mrs. Santa. On Thursday, December 15th at 2:00pm we gather for “Julestue” at Edith’s place. Everybody is welcome – please call Edith by December 10th if you plan to attend. Best wishes for a wonderful Christmas time from your sister church in Grimsby. Edith Wulff 905-561-8503 DANSKSKOLEN It is with sadness we announce that the Danish School will no longer continue this year. Since our wonderful and dedicated teacher, Lena Maul, returned to Denmark with her family this summer, we no longer have a teacher and strong organizer to continue the Danish School. It has been fun to be part of the Danish school and we will surely miss it. We want to thank the church for all the amazing support over the years.
