Building a Great Library
What do donors to the Toronto Public Library Foundation make possible? They help Toronto’s
Library fulfil the mandate set out in its ambitious 2012-2015 strategic plan: to grow a city of
readers, develop a city of learners, and connect a city of creators.
Throughout 2012, small and large donations from more than 3,800 donors supported Toronto’s
Library, providing enhancements well beyond what would be possible with government support
alone. This report highlights a few of the many programs, events, collections and activities that
Library donors helped make possible in 2012.
Growing a City of Readers
Donor support is essential for Toronto’s Library to deliver on its commitment to grow a city of
readers. Below are some of the key initiatives that donors made possible.
Ready for Reading

services, and resources

caregivers get their

purchase.
The Let’s Get Ready for
Reading resource guide was generously funded
by an anonymous donor.
Sophia Lucyk’s generous donation also helped
fund KidsStops at the Brentwood, Cedarbrae,
Dufferin/St. Clair, Mount Dennis, S. Walter
Stewart and Thorncliffe branches. These
interactive early literacy centres are fun, handson, play-based learning spaces where children
from birth to age five and their caregivers can
learn and play together.
Leading to Reading
Sophie’s Studio
Sophie’s Studio is
a series of creative
writing workshops
made possible by
a bequest from
lifelong Library user
Sophie’s Studio workshop and steadfast donor
participants
Sophia Lucyk, who
made a very generous gift of $3 million to
the Foundation. Led by published authors,
calligraphers, scriptwriters, humorists, and
even a puppet-maker, the four-week sessions
nurture creativity and build writing skills among
children seven to 12 years of age.
2
Learning to Read student
The Leading to Reading program helps
children in grades 2 to 6 with below-average
reading skills develop the literacy they need
to be confident and successful. In 2011/12, the
program reached its goal of assisting more
than 2,000 students. The Toronto Public
Library Foundation thanks long-time program
supporters Friends of Toronto Public Library,
North Chapter.
TD Summer Reading Club
for Children
Artwork from 2012 TD Summer Reading Club
In 2012, TD Bank Group renewed its
commitment to support the TD Summer
Reading Club for three more years. TD is an
invaluable community partner in encouraging
and nurturing the love of reading in today’s
young people in Toronto and through libraries
across Canada. In 2012, program attendance
figures were up 11 per cent across the country
– 639,365 in 2012 as compared to 576,784 the
previous year.
The improved TD Summer Reading Club
website, launched in early June, provides
children across Canada an exciting, interactive
environment. The site includes fun games that
build literacy skills and an interactive booklist
that allows kids to make comments and
recommend their favourite books to their peers.
During the summer of 2012, a shelter outreach
project brought the TD Summer Reading Club
and Toronto Public Library to eight family
shelters. The program allowed residents to
register for Library cards, participate in story
time programs, and check out materials.
Family Literacy
Great-West Life, London Life and Canada
Life committed $40,000 in 2012 and 2013 to
Family Literacy programs at Toronto Public
Library. This contribution helps to break
the cycle of family illiteracy by promoting
learning and reading as a family activity and by
strengthening the bond between adult learners
and their children.
Book Bash! Canadian Children’s
Literature Festival
Book Bash! is a celebration of some of Canada’s
best loved children’s authors and illustrators.
This free, fun-filled annual children’s festival
features a wide variety of activities and
programs and an all-star cast of authors and
illustrators who come together to instill a love
of reading in young children. Funding for the
festival, up to $15,000 each year, is supported
by the Muller Scholastic Endowment Fund for
Canadian Children’s Literature.
Word Out for Youth
In June 2012, Toronto Public Library launched
Word Out, an online summer reading program
specifically designed for youth. The program
was made possible through a $75,000
sponsorship from TD Bank Group.
Young Voices
In October 2012, the
Daniels family (brothers
David, Mark, Robert,
Peter, and William)
announced a $100,000
donation to the Young
Voices program in
honour of their mother,
Participants at the Young Norine Rose. The fouryear gift will support an
Voices Conference
annual creative writing
conference and workshop series for teens. The
2012 conference included workshops on graphic
novels, spoken word poetry, urban fiction,
photo-journalism, song-writing, illustration, and
filmmaking. The program produces an annual
magazine of youth writing and art.
The Daniels brothers’ donation will allow the
Library to:
• Increase distribution of Young Voices
magazine, encouraging more youth to
participate
• provide additional Young Voices writing
workshops
• increase attendance at the Young Voices
Writers Conference (sponsored in 2012 by
Deloitte through the Toronto Public Library
Foundation)
• implement an pilot electronic writer-inresidence program
3
Developing a City of Learners
Donor support helps Toronto’s Library meet the needs of Torontonians at every stage of life. Here
are a few of the programs that donors helped make possible in 2012.
Newcomer Accreditation
In 2009, an anonymous gift enabled the Toronto Reference Library to establish a new circulating
collection of accreditation and skill enhancement materials. Developed in response to high demand
from newcomers, the collection delivers effective job search, accreditation, and skills upgrading
information to people seeking employment.
Over the past three years, the circulating careers collection has grown to more than 1,500 titles. At
a purchase price of $50 to $100 each, many of the items are unaffordable for most users; access to
these materials could mean the difference between a dead-end job and a life-long career.
Personal Finance
Thanks to a gift from the Estate of Norman G. Hinton, Toronto Public Library was able to provide
a learning series on personal finance. The courses are open to all at no cost and cover a variety of
useful topics that include buying a house, how to reduce income taxes, and retirement planning.
Connecting a City of Innovators, Entrepreneurs
and Creators
Donors help Torontonians participate in today’s knowledge economy by helping the Library
provide increased access to culture, ideas, and business-building resources.

The Sun Life Financial Museum + Art Pass (MAP) makes Toronto’s
cultural treasures accessible for all Torontonians. The free family passes
are available at all 98 branches. From 2007 to 2012, almost 400,000
passes were borrowed, accounting for more than 850,000 visits. In
2012 alone, 73,000 family passes were borrowed.
Sun Life Financial renewed its commitment to the program with
$418,000 in funding between 2012 and 2013. In addition, MAP
Family Saturdays were introduced in May and October 2012,
bringing Toronto’s top attractions to branches around the city for
crafts, games, artifacts, and activities. Family Saturdays attracted
1,050 attendees in 2012.

June Callwood Lecture Series
The annual June Callwood Lecture honours the legacy of journalist, author and social activist June
Callwood (1924-2007). It provides a platform for the exploration and discussion of contemporary
social justice issues. This year’s June Callwood Lecture featured Order of Canada recipient
Stephen Lewis, whose talk drew on his extensive international experience to illustrate the power
of advocacy in the fight for social justice and equality. The series is supported in part by the June
Callwood Endowment at the Toronto Public Library.

Small Business Programs
A generous bequest from the Estate of Norman G. Hinton allowed the Library to enhance its
small business collections and programming. A self-made investment guru, Mr. Hinton was an
avid Toronto Public Library user who spent his adult life developing financial literacy skills and
managing his own portfolio using the resources at the Library.
Thanks to Mr. Hinton and to RBC Royal Bank, 2012 saw the introduction of Small Business Month
at the Library. Eight Library branches hosted programs for small business owners on a range of
topics, including social media, buying a franchise, legal issues, and basic bookkeeping.
Mr. Hinton’s estate also helped fund Business Inc., which helps early-stage business owners develop
the skills necessary for success. A follow-up survey conducted six months following completion of
the 2011 pilot program indicated that 63 per cent of participants had started businesses and the
remaining 27 per cent intended to start within three to six months.
Also new in 2012 was the addition of the Library’s first entrepreneur in residence. Miriam Tuerk
is the co-founder of Clear Blue Technologies and an advisor to venture and private equity firms.
During October and part of November, Ms. Tuerk gave workshops and conducted one-on-one
consultations with small business leaders and would-be entrepreneurs.
Special Collections
Thanks to funding support provided by TD Bank Group and
by the Metcalf Family through The Robert F. Reid Special
Collections Acquisition Fund, in 2012 the special collections
department was able to purchase many unique items of
cultural and historical significance.
New artwork and materials were added to the following
collections:
• Canadian Historical Picture Collection: Documentary Art
• Special Collections in the Arts: Stage and
Costume Design
• Baldwin Room Collection of Canadiana

re:vitalize – Toronto Reference Library Campaign
Creating the Library of the Future
Marilyn & Charles Baillie Special Collections Centre at Toronto Reference Library
On January 17, 2012 the Toronto Public Library
Foundation proudly announced that Toronto
philanthropists Marilyn and Charles Baillie had
made a remarkable $1.5 million gift in support
of its re:vitalize – Toronto Reference Library
Campaign. The gift helped the Foundation
surpass its $10 million fundraising goal in
support of the $34 million revitalization of the
Toronto Reference Library.
The Baillies’ gift was made in support of the
creation of a new Special Collections Centre,
a key outcome of the Toronto Reference
Library’s $34 million revitalization program.
Once completed, the new Marilyn & Charles
Baillie Special Collections Centre will bring
together the Library’s exceptional 1.9 millionitem special collections in Canadiana,
performing arts, and documentary art under
a new two-story rotunda and reading room to
be located on the Toronto Reference Library
fifth floor.
6
Acknowledging that the Library relies on
public funding as well, Mr. Baillie said, “private
donations should never replace public funding,
but they can allow the library to achieve a
level of excellence that would be impossible
otherwise. If we want a flourishing society, we
all need to do what we can.”
More than 250 donors helped make the
campaign a success. Library staff generously
rose to the challenge of former Chief Librarian
of the North York Public Library, Jean
Orpwood, to cumulatively match her own
generous gift of $10,000 to the re:vitalize
campaign.
The Foundation also thanks the City of
Toronto, Government of Ontario, Government
of Canada, and Cultural Spaces Canada for
providing funding to the re:vitalize – Toronto
Reference Library Campaign.
Other Ways to Make a Difference
Heritage Society – Estate Gifts
The Heritage Society honours Library
supporters whose deferred gifts will support
the Toronto Public Library in years to come.
In 2012, more than $300,000 was received
through estate gifts.
More than $100,000 was received from the
Estate of John Korhonen in 2012 to support
the Bloor/Gladstone branch. This gift was
instrumental in making improvements to the
branch in celebration of its centenary.
The Estate of Burle Yolles gave a legacy gift of
$25,000 in 2012. Among other initiatives, this
gift will support a series of lunchtime programs
in select branches, the Great Books lecture
series for seniors, and a digital audition signage
board at the Toronto Reference Library.
The Foundation also received gifts in 2012
from the Estates of Grace Chellam, Helen
Smibert, Baxter Graham Bonnell, Thomas C.
Scrymgeour, and Ann M. Revell. These gifts
supported Keep Toronto Reading, Fairview
KidsStop, the Great Reads booklists, the
Human Library initiative, Home Library
Service, the Osborne Collection, and other key
Library initiatives.
Literary Circle members provide a vital level
of support which enables the Foundation to
achieve more for the Library and the people
who visit our 98 branches each year. As
part of a community of Library champions,
Literary Circle members enjoy exclusive author
receptions and behind-the-scenes tours, an
annual donor celebration event, and a special
Literary Circle patron library card.
In spring 2012, Literary Circle members were
invited to a special viewing of remarkable items
drawn from the Library’s famous Osborne
Collection of Early Children’s Literature. In
addition, members attended an exclusive event
with the extraordinary Stephen Lewis.
New Collection
Launched this year, New Collection is a
membership program led by a dynamic
volunteer group of Toronto’s young leaders.

Patrons of the Literary Circle represent an
exceptional group of donors who demonstrate
their commitment to Toronto’s Library by
making generous annual contributions of
$1,000 or more.
New Collection is for the culturally curious
who want to be connected to our vibrant
literary scene while supporting Toronto’s
Library. Membership benefits include exclusive
programs and events with prominent writers,
artists, and leaders. Funds raised through
membership support the enhancement of
programs and services, collections, and
community spaces at Toronto Public Library.
The Book Lover’s Ball
The Book Lover’s Ball, the Foundation’s

$500,000 in 2012. More than 600 book lovers
joined host Citytv’s Tracy Moore and CityNews
anchor Melanie Ng for a glamorous cocktail
reception, followed by dinner and a fashion
show at the Fairmont Royal York Hotel. Guest
mingled with celebrity authors such as Stephen
Leacock Medal winner Terry Fallis, nonfiction
provocateur Peter C. Newman, CBC personality
Kevin O’Leary, Governor General’s Award
winner Miriam Toews, and Giller Prize-winner
Vincent Lam.
Guests also had the chance to “adopt” a Library
branch raising $19,000 to enhance branch
programs, services, and community spaces.
Friends of Toronto Public Library
The Friends of Toronto Public Library, North
and South Chapters have been generous
supporters of the Library for almost 20 years.
Over that time, they have jointly raised more
than $1.5 million in support of Library programs.
Each year, more than 100 volunteers dedicate
11,500 hours of service managing the two used
book stores – Book Ends and Book Ends South.
In 2012, the Friends of Toronto Public Library,
North Chapter donated $45,000 in support of
the Library’s Leading to Reading program. The
South Chapter donated $67,000 in support of
a variety of Library programs including DialA-Story, Story Time Outreach, and Ready for
Reading.
Third-Party Fundraising
Yorkville Branch received a $2,400 donation
from Whole Foods at Hazelton Lanes. The
store sold toy penguins throughout the holiday
season and donated $5 from each sale to its
Library branch. In all, 481 penguins were sold.
Agincourt Branch received a $1,000 donation
from local business owner Hugh Kuang of
Ever Young Asset Management. The funds will
be used to enhance children’s programming
materials and to upgrade the program room’s
sound system to ensure all community
members continue to enjoy the variety of
programs offered at this busy district branch.
Making it Easier to Give
Many people are still unaware that they can make a charitable donation to the Library. To
help increase awareness, the Foundation worked with the Library to feature a prominent
“Donate Now” button on the Library’s website.
To further increase awareness, the Toronto Public Library Foundation launched a Facebook
page, Twitter account and a New Collection Twitter account. These were created to engage
and interact with supporters, and to inform them of events and initiatives undertaken by
the Foundation on the Library’s behalf.

Special thanks to corporations that made new gifts
and pledges of $25,000 or more in 2012
TD Bank Group
Sun Life Financial
Since 1996, TD Summer Reading Club
(TDSRC) has been one of the cornerstones
of children’s literacy services at Toronto
Public Library. It promotes reading to school
age children and encourages them to keep
reading throughout the summer months. In
2011, TD Bank Group announced its renewed
and increased support of $2 million for three
more years of the TDSRC (2012-2014). TD’s
renewed commitment will also support Word
Out - a Teen Summer Reading program at
Toronto Public Library.
Since 2007, Sun Life Financial has helped
make the arts more accessible to all
Torontonians through its generous support
of the Sun Life Museum + Arts Pass (MAP)
program at Toronto Public Library. This
ongoing support – renewed again for 2012
and 2013 – extends Torontonians’ access
to the cultural life of the city. Anyone
with a library card can borrow a pass to
experience Toronto’s cultural treasures for
free. This is particularly appreciated in those
neighborhoods and communities where
access to arts and culture may be more
limited.
TD Bank Group also supports the
Kindergarten Outreach program at Toronto
Public Library. The program enables
Library staff to reach children who may
not otherwise independently visit a library,
and gives those children the chance to
borrow books and participate in programs
that improve their literacy skills and lead to
success in school in later years.
