Central Idea: Different factors affect balance and motion Lines of Inquiry: •How things balance •How things move •How we can change the way things move Teacher Questions: Why do things move the way they do? How do things move? What factors affect movement and blance? Attitudes and Attributes Students will have opportunities to demonstrate their abilities to be open-minded inquirers. They will show confidence and cooperation as they work with others to explore and investigate. Transdisciplinary Skills: Thinking Skills: Students will problem solve and apply acquired knowledge in practical or new ways Social Skills: Students will practice cooperation and group problem solving in their discussions and investigations. We will focus on being courteous to others, sharing resources and taking turns. Our next Prep unit of inquiry begins soon. The purpose of this unit is for students to develop an understanding of the transdisciplinary theme, How The World Works. We will focus on an inquiry into the natural world and its laws (the laws of motion) and the interaction between the physical world and human societies. Students will explore and experiment with balance and movement. Concepts for this Unit Form -Students will have the chance to explore different types of motion. Function -Students will experiment with how different things move and how motion works. Causation -Students will learn about forces. We will inquire into why things move in different ways. Transdisciplinary Links: PSPE: controlled body movements Mathematics: exploring movement using 3-D shapes Please talk about these words at home. Movement Balance Force Incline Revolve Forward Backwards Spin Turn Twist Swing Roll Slide Motion Friction Risks Factors Push Pull Home Ideas 1. Take photos of moving things. You can go on a moving objects hunt! PLEASE send these photos to school for us to use in class discussion. 2. Engage in conversations with your child about things around you that are moving. How are they moving? Why are they moving? 3. Create your own science experiments by exploring how different objects start and stop moving, how 3D shapes move, how quickly/slowly objects move. Assessment Assessment during this unit will be based on: *Understanding of the Central Idea *Enduring understandings *Knowledge of content *Use of specific vocabulary and skills *The assigned Learner Profile attributes and attitudes Experience motion at . . . •a playground •an amusement park •a water park (e.g. Tai Po Aquatic Center; Hammer Hill Road Leisure Pool)
