Holiday Shopping with Fitness in Mind:
Holiday shopping. It can be a joy, a challenge, or a burden. So many choices, so little time. Whether you’ve
finished most of your gift shopping before Thanksgiving or haven’t started, choosing the perfect gifts for
your loved ones can be a difficult task. Why not choose a gift that promotes health and wellness. Below are
some holiday gift ideas that can really get people motivated to be more active.
1. Workout Attire – Nothing is more exciting than getting a few new outfits to wear when being physically fit. This
can include shorts, sports bras, or brand new athletic footwear. Many of these items come in a variety of prices and
forms. If your loved one likes to run, why not buy them a pair of tennis shoes that you’ve customized for them. Many
of the popular brands of shoes have websites where you can choose the shoe, color, and even add their name or favorite
sports team. If the person you care about most is into yoga, why not buy them a new pair of yoga pants and matching
top. Fun colors will really brighten up their workout experience.
2. Exercise Equipment – Don’t let the title make you think you have to spend a lot of money. This can range
from a new set of free weights to a balance ball to fit bands. Anything that promotes physical activity. If
you are willing to spend more money, try an exercise bike, a treadmill, or an elliptical machine. Just make sure
if you are purchasing them a larger item that they have the space to accommodate the equipment.
3. Fun Fitness DVDS – Some people like to do their physical activity in the privacy of their own home. There
are a million and one different workout regimens available. Some have up to three months’ worth of workout
routines along with tips and nutrition advice. There are also video games out there that promote physical
fitness in one’s home, just make sure to check what gaming device they use.
4. Gym Membership – Sign your whole family up for the gym. Make it a habit to go with your loved ones so
that it creates accountability. If you sign up with a friend, you will be more likely to encourage each other
to use it. If they already have a membership, maybe a fun fitness class they wanted to try. Many of the
deal of the day websites have deals that are for yoga, Zumba,
Pilates, and other different classes in your area.
5. Other Memberships – Give the gift of membership to a place
that has room to move such as the zoo or a nature center. This
will encourage physical activity in the form of long walks with
loved ones. Not only will they be active, but will also learn about
different topics. Plus it’s fun to get outside.
Music – If the person you are buying for likes to do physical
activity with music, try buying them a music gift card to their
favorite online or in-store music store. Nothing’s better than
adding some new tunes to your mp3 player for your morning jog.
Whatever you decide to buy your loved ones this year, try to do
a little something to promote physical activity. It doesn’t have
to be big. Even small changes lead to results in the end. Have a
Happy Holiday!!!
NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!
It’s that time again when we’re thinking about the New
Year and what resolutions we should adopt for
2017. Maybe it’s eating healthier, exercising, or shedding a few extra pounds. While it’s easy to be motivated at the thought of turning over a new leaf in the New
Year, many worthy resolutions are forgotten by Valentine’s Day. Don’t set yourself up for failure; regardless
of the resolution, you’ll be more successful if you follow
these simple guidelines:

Be sure to set goals that are realistic. Many people make the mistake of being overly ambitious
in setting goals. You are much more likely to achieve your goal when you are mindful of what
you can realistically achieve and what may be an unreasonable target for you to reach.

Have an action plan. This should include a timeline that lists the steps along the way to help
you reach your goal.

Be specific about what your goal is. Rather than thinking “I want to lose weight”, ask yourself
how much you think is a realistic amount of weight for you to lose. It could be something like
“I want to lose 5 pounds by Valentine’s Day”. You could set smaller goals for each week to help
you achieve the larger goal.

Write down your goal, when you want to achieve it, and the action plan for how you will
achieve the goal. Studies have shown that those who put their goals in writing are much more
likely to achieve them. This also helps to remind you what you need to do in order to progress. Use positive phrases that affirm your behavior, such as “I will exercise 20 minutes five
days a week” instead of “I will not sit around on the couch and watch television every night”.

Be flexible with yourself. Understand that setbacks may happen along the way. Be sure to realize that this doesn’t prevent you from ultimately reaching your goal.
Many people who achieve their goals have rewarded themselves. This could be something that is
special and important to you, such as treating yourself to a movie or some alone time with a favorite book.
However big or small, realize that any change towards a healthier lifestyle is progress. As the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu wrote in the 6th century BC, “A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND
MILES BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP”.
