ROFFER'S OCEAN FISHING FORECASTING SERVICE, INC. TOLL FREE 800 677-7633 & (321) 723-5759 // WWW.ROFFS.COM ROFFS™ FISHERIES OCEANOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS FOR THE VEATCH CANYON TO POWELL CANYON OFFSHORE (LAT./LONG.) UPDATED ON WEDNESDAY 15 AUGUST 2012 FOR WED. P.M. & THURSDAY FISHING ONLY Based on a multiple factor analysis, the symbols (hot spot dots) mark the areas where bait concentrations are expected and where fishing action are expected to be better compared with other (non-marked) areas. These are not based on dock rumors or hearsay fishing reports. Fishing reports are stated as such. You should start fishing where you recognize other signs of good fishing conditions near these marked areas. It is very important to use your sea surface temperature (sst°) gauge to locate the boundaries of the water masses, which are outlined. Rather than trying to find water based on the absolute temperature values shown on the map, search for the relative change in sst where the water mass boundaries occur. Arrows indicate the main current direction. Numbers inside of the dots indicate the number of consecutive days that we have seen favorable conditions in that location. Afternoon sst° are likely to be 1°F warmer than those shown here. Bottom depths in fathoms (6 feet = 1 fathom). We were able to see this area clearly today to increase your chances for sharks, tuna, wahoo, dolphin, marlin and swordfish action. Overall, there is a counter-clockwise rotating eddy which appears to be a spin off eddy of a larger Gulf Stream warm core ring clockwise rotating eddy that is farther east and offshore that is pushing warmer and bluer direct Gulf Stream water (80°F-82°F) in a favorable inshore direction over the 100-500 fathom ledges east of Oceanographer Canyon over the Lydonia to Powell Canyons for some of the BEST conditions for fishing action in this entire area. The eddy in this area is centered near 67°40’W & 40°00-05’N and it appears to be best for fishing action along the blue-green to blue 76°F- 80°F water mass boundary favorable for two days from the west wall of Oceanographer Canyon near 68°10’W & 40°20’N extending east to the 100 fathom ledges near 67°56-57’W & 40°23-24’N to the 100 fathom ledges of Lydonia Canyon near 67°45’W & 40°25’N to the 100 fathom ledges of Powell Canyon near 67°28-29’W & 40°26-27’N. However, first you may want to start fishing and try the green to bluer-green 70°F/71°F to 75°F76°F water mass boundary also favorable for two days starting over the 60 fathom ledges near 68°20’W & 40°26’N extending east to the 100 fathom ledges just south of the Tip of Oceanographer Canyon near 68°10’W & 40°27-28’N east along this same water mass boundary to near 67°54’W & 40°27’N then east-northeast over the 100 fathom tips of Lydonia Canyon to the 60-70 fathom ledges to Powell Canyon area near 67°31-32-44-45’W & 40°31-345’N. THEN, if the inshore conditions and the 100 fathom ledges do not produce you will need to fish the 500 fathom ledges and more direct warmer 80°F- 81°F- 82°F Gulf Stream water also favorable for two days near Oceanographer Canyon near 68°03-04’ W& 40°13’N east along the 500 fathom ledges to Lydonia and Powell Canyons near 67°29-30-42’W & 40°20-22’N. Additional favorable conditions although where the water is starting to push more offshore is just east of Welker Canyon over the 100 fathom ledges and the blue-green to blended blue 76° F- 80°F water mass boundary favorable for two days near 68°49-55’W & 40°12-17’N. Fishing offshore and the western charted area, the majority of the water from Welker Canyon to Hydrographer Canyon to Veatch Canyon to East Atlantis Canyon appears to be blended, greener and pulling in an unfavorable offshore direction for fishing action. Inshore, the better conditions appear to occur over the wrecks and 35 fathom ledges along the green to bluer-green strong 70°F74°F/75°F water mass boundary favorable for two days near 69°26-30-34’W & 40°26-30-32’N and east-northeast along the similar strong 65°F/67°F- 73°F water mass boundary over the 35 fathom ledges favorable for three days near 69°06’W & 40°36-37’N and extending farther northeast along the same water mass boundary and the 40 fathom ledges of the Great South Channel near 69°00-02’W & 40°4550’N. The remaining favorable conditions inshore will likely only increase your chances for sharks and scattered bluefin tuna. SUMMER OFFICE HOURS: Mon. – Fri. 8:00 AM - 9:00 PM.
