Understanding Ecosystems
An Ecosystem consists of all living things (organisms) and the environments they live in and interact with. An
environment is everything that surrounds a living thing. The nonliving parts of an environment support the
living things in the environment. Organisms are the living part of the ecosystem and environments are the
non-living part of the ecosystems. Examples of living ecosystems are plants, animals, and other organisms
(bacteria, viruses, algae, yeast, and fungus). Examples of non-living ecosystems (environments) are grasslands,
deserts, tundra, forests, freshwater, and saltwater. Our Sun (which is also part of the ecosystem) provides light
and heat which are essential for supporting and sustaining life on our planet as well as the ecosystems where
Earth’s living things reside. The air that makes up Earth’s atmosphere is also part of our planet’s ecosystem.
The air around us provides the gases (such as life sustaining oxygen and carbon dioxide) as well the climates
and weather systems that determine how Earths various ecosystems behave. Specialized parts of the
ecosystem that support specific classes of organisms are called habitats. A habitat has all the things that an
organism needs to live and reproduce. Habitats provide the living space, light, temperature, shelter, food, and
water that organisms require to thrive. Habitats include such places as: nests, bodies of water, burrows, caves,
and tunnels.
