May - Our Lady of Lourdes

THE FLAME
Mission of Our Lady of Lourdes School
The mission of Our Lady of Lourdes School in partnership with the home, parish
and community, is to provide the opportunity for each child to develop spiritually,
academically, socially, emotionally and physically to her or his fullest potential, in
a Christ-centred, challenging, supportive environment, so she or he will become a
contributing member of a just society.
Principal’s Message:
Our Lady of Lourdes School Community is looking forward to celebrating
Catholic Education Week in a very meaningful and significant way. Please see
our calendar of events for the week. All community members are welcome to
join us for any and all events. Kindly have a discussion with your child(ren)
regarding our events and their perception of the message delivered.
Below is Bishop Crosby's introduction to our "Walking Forward Together" theme
for the week, along with a link again highlighting the relevance. Please enjoy.

Catholic Education Week
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Theme: Walking Forward Together
Walking forward together in Catholic Education means we are on a journey. As individuals, our
journey begins with important lessons learned at home with our family that continue at school.
With God’s grace, we strive to overcome failings, to seek reconciliation, and to grow in the joy
of the Gospel. As Canadians, we recognize our nation is on a journey of growth, too, marked by
struggle and accomplishment, moments of pride and regret; but a journey forward nonetheless
with great hope for the future. As we celebrate the 150th anniversary of Confederation, we
recognize that Catholic Education has always been part of that Canadian story. As our nation
has walked forward, it has never been without the gift of Catholic schools. Finally, as the People
of God, we are a pilgrim people, called, as the Church teaches, “to worship in truth and serve in
holiness”. (Lumen Gentium, 9) In our praying and learning and serving, we walk together
towards our heavenly home.
In this week of celebrating Catholic Education, may we be reminded that we are called to be a
people who journey, not content to stay in one place but always moving outward to where we
can serve others; we are called to walk together, never needing to feel alone in our mission;
and we are called toward a loving and merciful destiny.
May God continue to bless our publicly funded Catholic Schools in Ontario and all those who
serve in and with them.
Sincerely in Christ and Mary Immaculate,
+Douglas Crosby, OMI

about their training, and encourage them to try their best!
May, the month that promises us spring, is closing in upon us. May is the
month dedicated to Mary the Mother of Jesus. May is the month dedicated
to all mothers around the world.
Mother’s Day is a significant day where we say a special thank you, to a very
special person. On this day, we have the opportunity to honour our mother
in a wonderful way, letting her know how much we love her, and thanking
her for all that she does for her family. In our busy daily lives, we often
forget, how much mothers do for us each and every day.
Our Lady of Lourdes wants to take some time to show our appreciation and
deep gratitude for our moms. We invite all mothers (or grandmothers or
any significant person) to attend a special celebration on Friday, May 12,
2017 in the gymnasium at 7:45-8:30 a.m. Coffee, juice and muffins will be
provided. Students are asked to escort your mothers and to enjoy a muffin
and some special time together. We ask that you bring your own mug for
coffee to help us preserve the environment.

week. The students picked the following winners in the programs that they
participated in since December.
Blue Spruce: Stanley at School
Silver Birch Fiction: Heart of a Champion
Silver Birch Express: Pink is for Blobfish
Silver Birch Non-fiction: Half-Truths and Brazen Lies : An Honest Look at Lying
Thanks to all students who came to the library to read the nominated books this year!
Makerspace:
We have some students interested in finger knitting and working with yarn, so any
donations of yarn, embroidery floss, crochet hooks or knitting needles would be
greatly appreciated.
With the warmer weather approaching , we ask all parents and students to review the Dress Code for
Students, which can be found in the front of all agendas.
A few reminders for parents and students:
We invite students to bring sports equipment to school for personal use during the recess and lunch
breaks. All items should be labelled with the pupils' names.
Please refrain from bringing:
 hard baseballs
 Indian rubber balls
 toy weapons
Please note that bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and roller blades are acceptable means of
transportation for most students when a helmet is worn. If bringing such equipment to school,
students must always walk with their particular piece of equipment when on school property – they
must never use this equipment when on school property. For your own safety and the safety of others,
always follow these procedures. Please secure bicycles and scooters at our designated bike racks.
