Guest speaker is Billy King, local justice worker. • • • Pedestrian Safety in Carparks Car parks are dynamic environments, although vehicles are generally moving at slow speeds they will be coming toward you from all angles. They will be driving through the car park with the driver probably more interested in finding a park than looking for pedestrians. They may be reversing from parks and have restricted vision of pedestrians. They may be distracted by their passengers or children. As a pedestrian in a car park don’t be worried by who has the right of way. It’s safer to assume that the drivers around you are not aware of who has to give way and therefore may not give way to you. Older people, 65 and over, are involved in something like 45 per cent of all the injuries. Older people have limited agility….they cannot move as quickly to avoid situations that might result in a collision and also their perceptual function progressively declines as they age; their ability to hear approaching vehicles; sometimes their ability to see in their peripheral vision that a vehicle is approaching or is reversing towards them. These kinds of issues can add to risk, the likelihood of a crash happening, said Dr Bruce Corben, Monash University Accident Research Centre. • Always use the safest route when walking through car parks – use marked walkways or take the shortest route to available footpaths • Familiarise yourself with the car park – if driving, take a lap around the car park before parking. Look for and identify the designated walkways and plan ahead to ensure the safest routes to take once parked • When walking through car parks keep looking around taking in your surrounds and looking / listening for – • Reverse lights coming on • Exhaust fumes coming from vehicles Engines starting up Other pedestrians walking to and getting into their vehicles Any movements that may indicate vehicles about to start reversing Don’t use your mobile phone while walking Make eye contact with all drivers in vehicles that are coming toward you When crossing vehicle lanes make sure all vehicles have stopped moving before crossing If you belong to a club / church group or similar that meets regularly and has a car park, ensure all members are reminded at the conclusion of every meeting that there will be pedestrians moving through the car park. A Sweet Return Forty years on, an Australian classic is patrolling Victorian streets once more with an eye-catching appearance to get drivers to stop, look and think about their behavior behind the wheel. In the late 70’s, Mad Max’s Interceptor dominated Australian roads and cinemas. The V8 351 Ford Interceptor became the latest addition to Victoria Police’s Highway Patrol fleet in 1971. Featuring crisp white paintwork with bright coloured panels, it became known as the ‘candy car’. Now more than 40 years after the first candy car was released, its legacy is being honoured with a limited release of Ford XR8 Sprints. Road Policing Command worked closely with Ford’s design team to deliver two custom made cars. Assistant Commission Doug Fryer said it was a unique opportunity to incorporate the eye-catching cars into modern-day policing while honouring the force’s vehicle history. Mr Fryer said: “during the busy holiday season it’s more important than ever to drive safely and get home to your loved ones. Hopefully the sight of the new candy car on patrol will make people think twice about taking risks on our roads”. Young people are heavily over represented in the crime statistics, as both victims and offenders, in our local area, Victoria and across Australia. We, as a community, should assess our level of acceptance of assaults in public places. A continuation of the present trend of increasing numbers of assaults in public places affects our quality of life. In each assault the degree of injury varies from slight to life threatening, but there is also a cost to the community of medical bills, loss of work and compensation payments. A message to those who are tempted to assault, “Don’t be a fool, keep cool.” “This event is supported by the Victorian and Commonwealth Governments.” This will take place from March 31st to April 9th 2017 For further information about National Youth Week 2017 in Victoria, please contact Casie McDougall at the Economic and Community Participation Branch on (03) 9096 1244 or email [email protected] Or visit: http://www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/government-infoassistance/youth-programs/national-youth-week Did you Know? In Victoria, holders of Green and Blue Disability Parking Permits can park twice as long as the time allowed by the parking sign (for the same fee). Only Blue permit holders can park in designated disabled parking bays. You apply to the local council for a permit. Your doctor needs to complete part of the application. Get Social! Securely Store Spare Car Keys Research by Car Safe, the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council, has revealed that thieves using the owner’s spare keys took many of the late model cars that have been stolen. These keys were stolen earlier in a house burglary and the victim had not realised that they were missing. Make sure that you securely store the spare keys to your car. Trivia • If a deal seems too good to be true then it is probably a scam. Don’t be rushed into making a decision when buying a product or service. Ask a friend or family member to review a contract or other information about a product or service, prior to committing to it. As soon as possible, ring 000 (triple zero) if a tradesman or sales-person raises your suspicions in the way that they “sell” their services. Trivia Your tongue is the fastest healing part of your body. It’s impossible to sneeze with your eyes open!
